Two Zombie films

I'm in the need for some serious zombie action. Earlier tonight I watched Bio-Zombie, which was hardly great but entertaining nonetheless. I still think Versus is the best foreign zombie film, however, besides Undead.

Yesterday I ordered two zombie films, The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue and City of the Living Dead.

My question is: what are your opiniond on these two films?

City of the living Dead is great. Don't know about the other one.

If I'm not mistaken, The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue is a.k.a. Let Sleeping Corpses Lie. I haven't seen that one.

Also, if I can bat 2 for 2, City of the Living Dead is a.k.a. The Gates of Hell. I HAVE seen this one. I like it. Not my favorite, but a fun film nonetheless.

Hope I've helped you at least halfway. I thought giving you alternate titles might help as well.

Manchester Morgue aka Let Sleeping Corpses Lie is a veritable feast of bloody good fun. Stylish Spanish zombies menace the British leads, and there's a decent helping of gore. Hell, just talking about it makes me want to go pop it in the DVD player. City of the Living Dead is fun as well, though it's not on par with Fulci's best, The Beyond. Still, evil zombie priests and TONS of gooey body fluids make it worth the watch.

I really should watchZombie again. Either I saw a badly edited version which robbed me of it's overall brilliance, or I just thought it was shite.

Can anyone here recommend Zombie Holocaust? As a matter of fact, besides the obvious Romero trilogy, what ARE the best zombie films, or at least ones worthy of a looksee?

I didn't care for City of the Living Dead because the zombies run and use guns and stuff

but I wouldn't shelf it forever....it still gets played

as for Let Sleeping Corpses Lie......I hated it the first time I watched it, but I watched it again last weekend and I found a new love for it

not as gore packed as a Fulci flick, but it delivers

and I'd vouch for Zombie Holocaust

many parts will loof familiar but no zombi comleteist should be without it

LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE is a very, very good horror film ... As far as zombie films, it is top-notch ....

The story clicks along nicely, the atmosphere is wonderfully dread-filled, and once all-hell breaks loose, it becomes pretty disturbing ....

It is a must have for fans of the genre ...

City of the Living Dead is the one with the maggot rain right? And the pick axe thru the coffin cover? And some pseudo use of Dunwich and other Lovecraft mumbo jumbo?

I thought this was a pretty fun flick.

Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (aka -Living dead at Manchester Morgue(...weird, they don't even make it to Manchester), aka -Don't Open the Window) is a 1974 Spanish zombie movie made by Jorge Grau.

It is a nice atmospheric zombie movie, with some full on zombie gut munching and a nifty use of an ax (you'll see). Also the way the zombies were reanimated is a nice touch, and the movie looks beautiful. It looks like it was filmed around the castles and farmlands of England.

The soundtrack is supremely eerie, and I'm not talking about the jazzy score, but the moans of the undead.

George kennedy's character is a pisser and has some real hysterical dialogue.

I bought the special edition tin years ago, and I loooove this movie!

I highly recommend it!

City of the Living Dead is Gates of Hell by Fulci.
Another good movie, but more of a supernatural happenings movie with zombies than a straight full on zombie movie like Zombie. This movie, as you all know, has the best use of a power drill that I've ever seen.

Zombie Holocaust is the original, Italian version of Doctor Butcher M.D.
A weird little movie that has zombies and cannibals chowing down on natives, NY tourists/investigators and the whole time, a crazy Doctor running around with his expiraments.

Fits right in with all the other italian zombie movies.

Happy viewing!

Yup, and in the presence of future director Michele Soavi.

I dont want this to turn into a full-on debate akin to the one that happened with that idiot in the DotD Remake thread - but why is the zombies running and using guns a problem? Not every zombie flick has to copy Romero.

Gates of Hell fucking RAWKS!!!!!

When I initially posted last night I hadn't seen Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, but I bought an Anchor Bay VHS a few months ago. I just hadn't set aside time to watch it. BOY am I glad I did.

I found the movie to be very atmospheric. Although I could see many similarities to NOTLD '68 (and Jorge Grau even says as much in an interview after the movie) I still enjoyed it very much. Plus there's the chick in the beginning of the film who decides to go streaking. Yet another terrific find in the Big Lots video section for $3.88.

One question, though. Can someone tell me if I have an uncut edition? I didn't see anything on the case stating one way or the other? It was released by Anchor Bay in 2000. It contains a brief introduction by Grau, an interview afterward, a trailer (promoting "Don't Open the Window"), radio spots, and a still gallery. Naturally, being VHS there's no commentary track but he covers a lot in the interview.

This movie is a zombie gem. My only gripe is that I wish there had been more of them. Zombies, I mean.

Rumor has it, that there is a more complete version available where:

***SPOILER BELOW***
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
The old lady zombie is shown to actually pluck out the cop's eye and pop it in her mouth.

Right now, the only "full" edit of that scene is the reach down to the eye, but not the actual pluck or eating of the eye.

Jorge Grau remembers shooting that scene, but does not know if it even made it into the final film at all. He can't remember.

I think it must have been shot, because you see the reach and there is an abrupt edit to George and the girl cringing in disgust as they watch the action. There's a jump in the music.

So right now, this version is the complete version. It is uncut but not complete to the best of any sources available.

There seems to be some debate whether the eyeball pluck was even shot, but it is difficult because of the director's bad memory on the subject.

OK, my dvd's arrived this morning and I feel the need to wax lyrical. The Living Dead at Manchest Morgue was good, I liked the atmosphere a lot. Not that often do you get a zombie flick set in the British countryside, that's for sure. But there was a startling lack of any zombies at all, with about five appearing in the whole film. The first half hour took it's sweet damn time, too, before breaching into the plot. Overall, I'm glad I got it. The extras on the dvd were of a satisfactory nature, too. Good ol' Anchor Bay.

City of the Living Dead, however, is trash. And I'm not sure if it's enjoyable trash. The dvd I bought of it had a bit of a sound problem so that when anyone screamed, talked quite loud, there was a bang etc I got fuzzy noise happening. Annoying as Hell, and it faulted my overall viewing pleasure. However, I use that word amazingly lightly. What in the name of sweet Jesus H. Christ was CotLD all about?

We never got any serious zombie action until a bloody hour into the film, and what happened when they showed up? They teleported to-and-from the same spot a hundred times before attacking anyone. The story wa absolutely terrible. Fulci just created a bunch of characters then decided to concern himself with only three of them at the end. I mean, where was the resolution in the subplot with Bob after he got his head drilled in? Frankly, a dissapointing "zombie" flick - though Catriona MacColl is beautiful. However, I'm praying The House by the Cemetery and The Beyond are much better.
