Thread Starter
I need to buy a region free player, any recommendations on where to buy and/or brands? I have been debating over this player at e-bay for awhile, anyone have info on it? Thanks in advance.

I can't give you much info on region free dvd players because what I use is a gameshark. If you have a PS2 you can buy the gameshark for 30-40 dollars and it also acts as a region free dvd player.

Well you can't beat the price and it did get decent ratings...

Hey man, that's the exact one I have and I bought it off Ebay as well. The one I got had the buy it now option for like $40-50 if I remember.

It's just fine. I've got no complaints. The picture is fine, but most of what I have R2 is TV (Ghost Watch, Stone Tape, Twin Peaks) so those are not huge on visual quality. I have a Danish They Live and it looks ok. But I should add that I haven't gotten around to buying a 2nd S-cord for the video yet so I'm using pretty crappy cables. Once I get that I have no reason to believe the picture won't be just as great as my Sony.

So yeah, I'll give it a thumbs up (and it's a wonderful thing to know that when you read on here about all the cool movies coming out or already out non-R1, that you can get 'em. My R3 Dead End is on the way )

Darkness, I bought a Malata DVP-520 about 6 months ago, and it is great ...

My first DVD player was a Panasonic CV-50, which was absolutely great with the exception of major tracking problems ... The sound was the best I've heard, the picture was excellent and everything about it was first-rate; except for the fact that two out of every three DVDs I would play would freeze up at some point ( apparently, this was common with the CV 50s ) ....

Anyways, instead of having someone take it apart and adjust the laser and modify it so that it would play reigon free, I decided to just buy something new ...

I bought the Malata on eBay ( new ) from a seller in Canada .... The Malata plays flawlessly ..... The sound isn't quite as perfect as the Panasonic, the remote is a bit small and flimsy, and overall, it isn't the tank the Panasonic is, but it's close, and it's completely reliable ...

I second the Malata recommendation. Absolute gem of a player.

I must say I have about 200 DVD, and of those I've found about 7 or 8 which are completely incompatible with the playstation. It has nothing to do with the regionfree, just the machine itself. Some of them are the same region as the ps2.

Also, AFAIK, the PS2 does not do PAL/NTSC conversion.

Player hack for the Malata DVP-520

- Turn the player on.
- Press and hold Clear until the screen turns dark.
- Now enter a region code (0 is defult, or 1 - 8).
- Press and hold Clear. The opening screen comes back.
- The default code (Region 0) is reset when the unit is
turned off.

Try at your own risk

Sorry if this is off topic , but bunnymud got me thinking about hacks for dvd players. To be honest I'm not too sure where to look though. I have a toshiba SD2815, and would love to know if there was a way (a simple way), to be able to play any region dvds on this ( if possible). I hope I'm not sounding lazy, I'm really just not sure where to look. I could alway break down and get a player off of ebay, but if I could save $50 more the better.....Thanks for any help

couldn't find any off the bat

if you still have the manual look and see if there are instructions in it to make it region free. I'm seeing that this is a possibility

If the default is Region 0, why would anyone want to change it?

that is a good point

and far too logical for me to pick up in the first place

because some discs specifically ask the software "is this player region X" instead of "can I play in this player".
