Whew....for a moment there, I thought they were actually going to theatrically release these films. No such worries now that I've seen trailers.

Is this new?

The Miramax website says April the 16th for a release of Hero.

On Apirl 17th...it'll still say that.

Cept you won't find a theatre in the country with it.

Well, Zatoichi looks good, but the Japanese trailer looked better. And do we really need Mr. Movie Voice anymore? He is pretty obnoxious and immediately zaps me out of the trailer.

The other two look decent. Valentin looks like any other heartwarming movie. Nothing too special. I'm Not Scared looked like another Children of the Corn at first. But, it does have me intrigued.

I am just wondering if we will actually get to see Zatoichi. Maybe so since it is a Mirimax release and not a Dimension release (not sure if Hero was under Dimension or Mirimax).

CT, have you heard anything about whether it will be edited or not? I hope to God they leave it alone. Kitano has a very specific feeling and direction when it comes to time and pacing. I also hope all the awards convinve them to let it be.

So far nothing regarding cuts and for all intents and purposes they may very well not cut it.

I don't know if Kitano would have more clout with Miramax than Yimou did but I certainly hope so.

This is Miramax's chance to show they can actually treat a foreign film decently.

We'll just have to wait and see.

If I find anything out I'll let you know...

Im sorry but the Mr. Movie Voice doing the.......'Justice has a new name' makes me sick. This is not a Steven Segal film and I guess I should just be happy they didnt lay a Drowning Pool song over the action scenes.

Wow...that Zatoichi trailer did just about everything in it's power to make me avoid the film.

However, it did not succeed.

Wow, having seen the movie, I gotta say that Zatoichi trailer does an excellent job of completely misrepresenting the the actual film.

actually just came back from an advance screening of Hero, which will be released in cinemas over here starting this thursday. The strange thing is, is that I'm pretty sure it's an American version of the flick, as all the Chinese writing at the start and end of the flick has been changed to English only (I have the Hong Kong DVD, and that one has both English and Chinese in the introduction/end). there's no other difference with the HK DVD though, no cuts and thankfully NO DUBBING.

It was great to see it on the big screen for once, so I hope you all will get the chance too. fuckin' Miramax.

oh yeah, just to make the hurting worse: we get Zatoichi in cinemas on the 5th of February. (sorry).

Watched the dvd of Hero Saturday afternoon. Lotsa arrows. Lotsa pretty colors and coordinated costumes. Lotsa wire work.

Don't see what all the fuss is about, though.

Yeah, once you get past the absolute beauty of the film (which no one can deny) and the rashomon-style story, the film does feel kind of hollow.
It's beautiful, granted, but in a really obvious sort of way. The scene in the leaves being one such example. The fade to red, while undeniably very pretty, was cloyingly obvious. And before the fight even started, two of us watching said "hey, you think we'll be seeing a whirling-leaves-style attack soon?".

I liked the multiple-possible-storyline approach, but that's hardly new, either.

Don't get me wrong, we heartily enjoyed the film, but the online orgasms it receives still baffle me.
It's kinda hard to explain fully, perhaps the tragedy of the story itself. It was certainly a very beautiful film and the colors itself play into the story itself. I'm not gonna try and make you "get it: or whatever. Some people enjoyed it on some levels and some people on other levels.

All I know is that people have been saying lately is that what you saw IS the Miramax cut of the film. The 2 hour cut is actually Zhang Yimou's...

I think there's a big deal about it because its a collection of the prettiest images caught on film since... well, In the Mood for Love, probably.
I can't see Hero raking in the cash when (and if) it is eventually released theatrically. Nice cinematography, though.

Which...is to be expected.

The Christopher Doyle factor...

Hell, even Made is a beautiful movie. His best work stateside is Quiet American.

I wish we could institute some rule where the first person to bring up Box Office got a slugbug punch.

Beautiful images, involving (though necessarily deep) story, great performances, amazing kung fu, yeah, I don't get the fuss.

You people are crazy.

Also, net = hyperbole. Get over it. Move on. Enjoy.

I'm just saying, as far as Miramax is concerned they love movies, and they will put out films they believe in even if they don't have a big chance of BO. Problem is, they don't believe in these HK films, they are just part of Bob's plan for world domination. Even if it is released eventually I am sure it will be on such a small screen count it won't get anywhere near me, and I can already watch a very high quality version as it is, but I'd probably have enjoyed it more on the big screen.

I thought you found Down and Dirty Pictures boring. Also, who's to say. At this point, we're not even sure it'll come out stateside. Perhaps, as other's here have hinted at, the wait will lead some viewers to dismiss it because the hype fans generated, which may have been generated simply to try and force Miramax to release it.

But as both you and Goldman point out, when it comes to this horse race, nobody knows anything.
I obviously decided to finish it. It got interesting once it hit the Tarantino years.
I'm not surprised.
The early stretch concerning Sundance was pretty boring. Redford was just sort of there and Soderbergh isn't exactly a controversial cat. Most of the information was already floating around.
Didn't Valentin already get released? I remember when they did at least one promotional screening of it here in Atlanta earlier this year.
Sean, not worth arguing over. My guess is that you're more a fanboy and what interests you most is the people you care about more than the story, and you were just looking for "Easy Riders Raging Bulls" style dirt.

I love how Bateman works double time for Miramax in their domestic publicity and production department in which he decides how many prints Hero will be released on. I believe he also covered this area tremendously when Kill Bill came out, and he decided that he didn't like how they were selling the film.

How's the pay there in Iowa from NYC?
