The Quick, the Dead, and a Giant Hole in Keith David's Head.

Another fun movie, just one big showdown after another. Raimi's direction is the star of the film.

Great cast in this one. A very evil Hackman, Crowe, DiCaprio, Pat Hingle, Lance Henriksen as a pretty boy, Sinise, and of course....Keith David w/ brain fragments.
Sharon Stone is alright. Not really convincing as a badass or a scared woman, but i guess it's one of her better performances.

I like how she says "The law is back in town" at the end after blowing up the whole town.

My name is Cantrell

How do you spell that?

Correctly.

Love this film, a little hidden gem without doubt.

On the IMDB there is this incredibly annoying comment that is still hogging the bottom of the page.

I can recommend this film highly to everyone!! If you are having trouble sleeping, that is. How this junk got out to the public I can't fathom. It offered nothing in the way of drama; it did offer, however, some of the silliest 'comedy' which was not intended to be comedy. At least I don't think it was meant to be so. I expected a realistic movie about gunfighters; and got a bunch of overgrown boys playing at being Billy Badass. And Sharon Stone! Gad, this woman needs a new profession. Miscast maybe, or perhaps no actress could do much with such a stupid, overdone role. Gene Hackman, usually one of my favorite players, was simply boring and unbelievable. But again, he didn't have much to work with. This was an idiotic film, I give it 3 thumbs down.

I don't even want to read this idiots comments about the Evil Dead trilogy, they really have lost the plot.

I still want to see the bogus scene Raimi shot with Bruce Campbell

"Three thumbs down", that's priceless. Sounds like a band name.

It's an easy film to like. The action is decent, Raimi's visual humour fits in nicely, and there's some great use of Henriksen and Keith David.

However, the tribute to Leone's origin of Harmonica has no power, because it lacks the vital ingredient- authentic, effortless Italian flashback style. As a result it feels just as self conscious as some of those slavish grindhouse (slave to the grindhouse?) refs in Kill Bill. Way too ambitious and destined to fall flat.

"Arrrgh! Put an ace up there, everyone'll know what that means!"

I was so surprised when I saw this on cable, I was under the impression it sucked. Now it's one of my favourite westerns! (I know!) Gene Hackman's in his usual outstanding form, and what a great cast to back him up. Even Sharon Stone was pretty decent. I was impressed that, with basically a film of duels, Raimi was still able to crank the tension up further and further as the movie went on. Benefits of being able to put together some memorable characters, I think.

Couldn't agree more. This is one of those flicks that should be great but isn't. Crowe along with just about everyone else is solid. Even DiCaprio is ok in this. The problem lies totally with Sharon Stone and frankly she sucks in this. I can't get over how atrocious she is in it. Saying that the film is almost saved by another fantastic money performance by Gene Hackman. Notice that I said almost.

I like that people love this flick but to me it just doesn't work real well where Stone is concerned.

Because of the cast I really want to like this movie but it just doesn't do it for me. It's been a long time since I saw it so maybe I should give it a second chance. The hole in David's head is a classic shot.

For me, the most obvious tribute in this film was the part where Crowe's captors smash up his hands, referencing Brando's One Eyed Jacks. This is one of my favorite roles of his, too. And he looked cool as hell in that wardrobe.

I don't quite agree with all the Sharon Stone hate, but my strongest reaction to her in this film is: "swell! An interesting female main character--that never happens".

The old guy in this movie who tries to rape the young girl is so nasty. I've seen him in several films, some of them older, and I can't see him without thinking of how creepy and gross he was in this.

Awesome movie. Just so goddamn fun.

I agree, it's a great, fun movie. Not Raimi's best, but still a very solid piece of entertainment.

This movie grows on me each time I watch it.  Hackman is on fire here, especially in the scene reference by the thread title, and Raimi keeps the pace tight and throws in some cool camera tricks to help elevate a pretty repetitive script (there are probably 12 gunfights in the movie). Also, it looks pretty good on Netflix Instant Watch HD if you are so inclined.

Just watched this on AMC last night, and while I think it starts losing steam once the killer cast of supporting characters starts getting thinned out by the tournament, it's still a rollicking good time.  Hackman looking down and seeing the hole in his shadow is such a great shot, and I love the scene where everyone is signing up for the tournament; it's a great way of quickly sketching out all the characters.

Was thinking about this flick last night while I watched the "not as good" JONAH HEX. It might make a decent double-feature.

You can count me among the fans of The Quick And The Dead. Gene Hackman is great as the villain. Because of this movie and the 3:10 To Yuma remake, I would like to see Russell Crowe do another Western. Having great character actors like Lance Henriksen, Keith David, Pat Hingle, and Mark Boone Junior helped as well.

I didn't like 3:10 To Yuma a whole lot but I agree Rusty should do some more westerns. Mofo's the most old school leading man around in terms of ruggedness and he's right at home on a horse to say the least.

I'd like to see what the Coen brothers could do with him.
DEAD is a fun movie, but not what it could have been.

Lance Henriksen's hair might be the best part of the movie for me.

I remember catching this movie back in high school and hating it because of the camera work. Now, years later and wisely educated in the hallmarks of a Raimi film I love it for being Raimi's take on the western genre. As a stand alone piece though, I still think it falls a little flat.

It is notable for being one of the few westerns where the lead is a woman, and more importantly, where her gender isn't that big a deal. There's maybe one or two scenes really contingent on her being a woman. Otherwise any pretty face could have played the character. Just one of the ways you know this comes from the genre of post-modern westerns that kind of took over the genre in the nineties and early aughts.

Major fan here.  It's full of Raimi's fun and verve, with attendant dramatic ZOOM IN shots.  It's a tournament flick, so you don't get to know the character's too well, but they're painted interestingly enough and inhabited by great enough character actors for that not to be a problem.  Just a nice, energetic action movie.  Plus Hackman is super great.  Just a mean SOB.  The comic book version of the guy he played in Unforgiven with a dash of Henry Fonda.

I've gone on record as saying I prefer this film to all three of the SPIDERMAN films.     Such fun and that cast is gold standard.

I like this movie but don't love it. It's elevated by some pretty fantastic scenery chewing turns from the likes of Hackman, Hendrickson and David among others but it's such a self-conscious and in many ways rudimentary homage to Leone that to be honest all it makes me want to do is watch an actual Leone western instead.
