Big Fish // Tiny Firefly // Tim Burton

I knew nothing of Tim Burton's newest film BIG FISH going into the theater Friday night ...... My last experience with Burton was the miserable PLANET OF THE APES, so I was preparing for another let-down of sorts .... Boy was I wrong ...

First, I realize that BIG FISH is by no means a horror film ... But I think it is a film that deserves mention here because it deleves wonderfully into fantasy, and Matthew McGrory ( Tiny from HO1KC ) has a major role .... and becasue we are treated to Tim Burton back at the top of his game ...

In the past, Burton never really captured my full admiration, although I've enjoyed his better stuff ..... But with BF, I think he's put out his best film to date ....

Has anyone else seen this film, or at least care to comment on Burton's filmaking history ???

Frankenweenie was the best! Seriously I love Burtons style Sleepy Hollow, Batman, Batman Returns, Beetlejuice, Ed Wood, etc. are all great films. I also liked PotA quite a bit.

I haven't seen Big Fish yet but I definitely want to. Burton is a genious.

I love Tim Burton. I used to be completely obsessed by him in my teens. Favourites are Vincent, Edward Scissorhands and NBC. Big fish got me crying, just like everyone else, but I personally didn't find it as touching as, say, E.Scissorhands. Just doesn't appeal to me in the same way.

Make sure you read his poems, too. They're simply amazing.

Thoroughly enjoyed Big Fish, and it's final moments definitely get you weepy. I don't think this is Burton's best film to date, Ed Wood, to me, takes that honor. On a maturity level, Big Fish is a return to form after the "pretty bad but entertaining" Planet of the Apes but I prefer Tim in his weird and dark mode...sort've like Sleepy Hollow, another personal fave that ranks high on my list.

Jess, while I tend to disagree w/ you regarding BIG FISH, I understand what you mean ...

Ironically, what got me with BIG FISH was the melding of the real and the fantasy worlds, and how the characters exsited ( or didn't ) within them ...

A short time ago there was discussion here about what makes for a frightening film, and why certain people are effected ... In regards to Burton, I think that out of all of his films, BF effected me on a personal level most, and brought to attention alot of emotional ties I have to people in my life ...

I'm going to have to agree with you on that one Jess, Big Fish didn't do it for me. I never knew what exactly it was in the film that didn't get me into the story, but you've nailed it. Thank you. Now I can answer all of those people that keep asking why I didn't think it was amazing.

That and the fact I didn't give a shit about Ewan's portrayal of Bloom. I know it was supposed to be fantastical and heroic, but I couldn't attach to it on any level. And yes, I did have a childhood (many people have asked me, "didn't it remind you of your childhood?")

We must maintain.

Sorry, but nothing about Big Fish is on autopilot. It is IMO easily Burton's best work other than Beetlejuice, which is of course not in the same genre of film. Every performance in Big Fish is good, if not great, and it really makes you(me at least) treasure your life, the experiences you have, and the people you meet. 8.5/10.

Great movie! I connected with it on many levels. I don't see the complaints about Burton's reality situations at all.

I don't either. Bruce Wayne fell flat? I thought Keaton and Burton did a fantastic job bringing such a revered character to the big screen.

Thread Hijack!

Either way...Burton should be doing Van Helsing instead of Sommers.

Sorry, felt like it had to be said.

Hey a Bears fan(maybe?) and Packer lover agreeing. Crazy. I too wish I was in England. Maybe a nice flat in London...Sorry, that was random.

Keaton was the best Batman. His Bruce Wayne was perfect. It's the actor not the director.

Or maybe it's because Burton's fantastical elements are so surreal that when he does the mundane it feels too mundane. That's not how I feel but I can see it.

Hell Yeah I'm a Bears fan. Favre is great but he's starting to get a little shaky man.
