Im heading out today to pick up a modem for the PS2. I have Socom II but my motivation for finally going online with the PS2 is RISK: GLobal Domination. I love me some RISK.

I play Socom 2 every other night or so. I am known by the moniker of MoistSnackcake. Classy! My brother-in-law also plays. He plays as MoistTowelette.

I also occasionally play Need for Speed: Underground online.

Hey I've got a PS2 online question.

What exactly do I need to go online? Just that $40 converter or whatver it is? I have a dsl line that goes into a modem them into my computer. Is all I have to do is instead of going into my computer I put it into the PS2 thing-a-ma-jig?

Cause RE Outbreak comes out in a little over a month and I need to help kill some zombies!

yeah, new Resident Evil is always cause for excitement. I think what will be needed to play is:

-a PS2

-a copy of RE Outbreak

-the PS2 network adaptor

-a broadband internet connection (don't think it will allow dial up, not sure though... even if it does, since most others will be on broadband, that will probably mess things up if you're on dial up)

-possibly the PS2 hard drive (again, not sure)

some other games have a monthly subscription on top of all that, but I think they've now confirmed that RE Outbreak will be free to play in this country.

and by the way, if enough people at this board are interested, we should organize online sessions... never played an online game before, but could be great fun. especially since it's basically your classic Romero/Living Dead scenario.

Actually, you will probably need a router and cable to connect it to as well. And even MORE stuff if you have to have wireless connection.

Many ISPs don't allow your broadband modem to connect directly to your console. I learned this the hard and expensive way when I experimented with X Box Live. Even worse, my router really buggered up my system, forcing me to do continuous reboots just to connect to the Net somedays..

Just warning yall.

Yeah, I have no idea how this shit works. I looked at the Network Adaptor the other day (and thank you, Disciple for mentioning the name...I knew it wasn't a thinga-ma-gig) and it looks like it'll support what I got. I have DSL thru my phone company, so I'm guessing I just have to buy a longer cord to run from my modem to the adaptor.

That just seems too simple, and I'm positive it won't work. sigh.

And PS2 doesn't have some bullshit monthly online fee per game like X-Box does, do they?
I don't think there's a monthly online fee just to connect. but I really don't know right now, Doc. like I said, online gaming is new to me too.

but I guess we're going to find out pretty soon...

No monthly fee. It's quite simple to use actually. All you need is the network adapter, and plug your phone line, or whatever type of cord you use into the back of the adapter, and your set. Like everyone esle, resident evil should be pretty good online. Matter of fact, I think I saw somewhere that you can't finish the game 100% without going online with it at the end.

thanks for the confirmation.

should also mention that there's going to be a playable offline mode for anyone who wants the solo experience.

LOVE MY RE STUFF. can't wait for this game!

Some digitasl cable or dsl providers will not allow more then one Internet connection before they force you to buy a "business plan". My provider is one of these. In these cases you will end up using a router (likely) or a proxy server (not the best way to do it). Either of those solutions sit between your home equipment (PC, laptop, PS/2, etc...) and the Internet and act as your one true connection.

If you need any assistance, PM me and I'll help ya' out.
