How very Star Wars!
I like drawn posters, but WTF?
It was created by the same guy that did the Indiana Jones and Star Wars posters, but for some reason Sony doesn't like Guillermo very much and are refusing to use it for the promotions. Instead it will be sold through comic book stores later this month.

And it is a thing of beauty...
Drew Struzan is the artist. Guillermo commissioned this legend to do the poster. I don't know the specifics of why Sony isn't using it, but they are opting for a more photo-friendly poster design.

You will be able to find Struzan's poster in comic shops, however. Good luck getting one! Fanboys are on the prowl....

That poster doesn't do it for me. At all.

It is too much like a 'fan at' poster. Granted, 99% of fan art is NO WHERE near that quality, but it just lacks something. It's a comic book movie, we get it already. But it just doesn't look professional enough. I liked the other poster, where it seemed so much cooler and like a comic book come to life, whereas this just seems......blah. Not that the art work is horrible, it's really not, but I can see why they wouldn't go with it. I mean I am looking forward to this movie but if I wasn't, that poster wouldn't change my mind.

I dig it. Gonna scour some shops. Need something on my wall.
I think it's a good looking poster, but I gotta say I'm kinda glad it won't be the one on my lobby walls.

I'm not a huge fan of this guy. His Re-release of the original Star Wars Trilogy have been his best, but I haven't dug his prequels or Harry Potter posters too much. To me, these look just like those, but with Hellboy characters. Not enough difference between his posters. Hellboy deserves something odd and fresh.

From what Nick wrote over at the CHUD main page they simply showed the different posters to Joe Averages from, like, Iowa or something and then stuck with the one they likes best, i.e. not this one.

I don't think that's very tragic as the poster will still be available to the geeks for whom it was so obviously made. I mean, let's face it, even if you like the poster (I think it's OK but not great) you have to admit that it won't make people who're not into HELLBOY go and want to check it out. It would limit HELLBOY's already small chances for box office success. I feel sorry for Guillermo because I love the guy's work and attitude towards fans and the genre but I think Sony/Revolution made the right choice here.

I dig it, but if it could in any way stand in the way of marketing this bad boy then I have no problem with not using it.

I have no doubt that you'll be able to get a prop quality replica, but I also have no doubt that it will cost more than an actual gun.

Wouldn't it be awesome if there were a high school shooting with one of those HELLBOY guns?

Note they ket the lanyard loop. Interesting.

Me thinks it is a crucifix

and the poster reminds me of the first Indiana Jones poster

Like it I do

And if it is a true .577 caliber be prepared to shoot probably one or two rounds before giving up.

Stupid cops ... Always dropping shit ... Doughnuts, guns, the soap for you to pick it up while they unzip ...
I didn't like it at first, but now the more I study on it the more I find myself appreciating the artwork and design that went into it. I never was that impressed with the first Hellboy poster they put out. So far it looks like Van Helsing is beating Hellboy in the monster-fighter poster battle. Don't suppose anyone knows yet the size this poster is going to come in? Will it be the standard theatrical 27x40 size or perhaps something smaller?
Hellboy is essentially a cop...more like a detective if I remember right the gun he uses only holds one shot but it packs a wallop...I need to dig up my hellboy comics...I don't like this poster either...excellent craftmanship but no where near lovecrafty enough...why isn't Mignola going one? I Know he did a teaser poster.
There's no reason for me not to like it but I don't. No problem with the design. It immediately reminds me of Indiana Jones for obvious reasons. I think it's that the image of Hellboy in an Indiana Jones theme doesn't work for me. And it's not like I'm a big Hellboy comic fan either. The poster has to give you the feel for what the movie will be (like Dawn of the Dead). The trailer for Hellboy and the poster give me conflicting 'feels' . Like that time I was at Boy Scout camp and the troup leader lured me with candy into his tent late one hot summer night....
if I had to choose between Van Helsing and Hellboy based alone from the commercials.....HB would win hands down
post #22 of 35
The Helsing trailer looked like ass...bad CGI werewolf.
bad CGI.
very, very bad indeed.
Yeah, Hellboy looks like SUCH a realistic charecter, doesn't he? Not cheesy in the least.
He could kick the shit outta Batman

that's for sure
Then don't see it....The trailer looked infinitly better then the Van Helsing one. Hellboy is a very cool character and I'm glad Gulliermo had the balls to try and make the flick and make it as true to the character as possible...plus Abe Sapien looks killer...
I'm not a drooling Hellboy fan boy. I never read the comics. I am interested in seeing it, it looks cool despite the overhype, but no way can you call up a dodgy cgi werewolf for not looking realistic and then promote a movie with a big fucking red devil or something in it. That's being totally hypocritical.

And as for the Van Helsing thing...well, lets see what more people decide to go see, and then see how effective the promotion for both was.

If the Van Helsing trailer is really as crappy as you say, and Hellboy's is so great, then well, Hellboy is bound to bring in more customers due to it's more effective marketing.

We get it. You dont like the werewolf CGI. Quit bitching, it had NOTHING to do with this thread.
well...VH has Wolverieneene in it so that is about 20,000 girls right there that want to see it alone, if not more

And not to mention classic monsters all in one movie.

Hellboy is a underground movie that cannot compete with the PR budget VH has

in the end, the dollars don't judge the worth of a movie

time does
Calm down skipper...The only place Hellboy is getting hype is among geeks. Van Helsing will no doubt bring in a larger audience but that won't neccesarily make it a better film. I seriously doubt a Hugh Jackman film will be beat out by a Ron Perlman film...and bunnymud brought it up not me.

No, you said the trailer for van helsing sucked. Well if it's THAT terrible, won't it turn people away in droves? I know I wouldn't see a movie who's trailer sucked.

Your just going back on it because I think we both know.

I hate that you brought Van Helsing into this thread and all, and made this a 'vs' thing, but yeah...we shall see who's trailer was more effective. A trailers purpose is to entice people to see the movie. Even if the movie sucks, chances are the trailer got asses in seats (as with me and queen of the damned). So lets see which trailer does its job better, shall we?

Believe me, I think Ron Perlman is fantastic, and this film deserves to be a sucess just to boost his career, but why did Bunny even have to bring up van helsing?
I think just as a comparison really...you have to remember the number 1 movie in the US last week(maybe it was the week before) was You got served...so I have very little faith in the movie going public
post #34 of 35
But can't we agree that...oh shit I forgot what I was going to say.
Actually I believe I was the one who first brought up Van Helsing in this thread. But I was only comparing the two posters, not trailers or anything else.
