Vampire$

I love the book (and the movie) but I hardly know anyone who has read this book before. I loved it to death, I felt for the charecters more than any others. Anyone else feel the love for this book?

I've wanted to read it since the movie came out, but I've never got around to it. I should get it sometime. Is Padre in it?

Never read it, but would like to. I thought Vampires was okay, not great Carpenter, but watchable.

I think a bunch of people on here have read it though, I remember a lot of people saying how they couldn't enjoy the film because they loved the book so much (among other reasons) in a past Vampires thread.

My huge love for the book rather tainted the movie for me. Steakley did a much better job than Carpenter, IMHO, and there was none of that "vampires walking in the daylight" business. And seriously, where the hell was Felix the gunfighter? Seriously, he's one of the coolest prose characters I've ever come across.

BTW, Firefly, if you dug Vampire$, you should definitely check out Steakley's other book, a scifi opus entitled Armor. It's a very different take on the whole Starship Troopers bughunt idea -- really radical stuff. What's most interesting about it is the fact that the two main characters are also named Felix and Jack Crow. They're essentially the same character types as the duo in Vampire$, but this is a sort of Elseworlds spin that places them in the future. And Armor actually came first.

Yeah I always pondered picking that up.

I think the reason I loved the film so much is I actually found the book AFTER having seen the film. If I had read it first it might have tainted it, but I just thought the movie was pretty intense.

Vampire$ is my favorite vampire novel ever. I was always more fascinated with vampire hunters than the creatures they went after. The book has everything that makes it a great horror novel - action, gore, scares, sex - but it also has characters that you care about and takes a very cool look at vampires as well. In the novel Jack Crow is a much more complex character and I can't believe that any filmmaker would decide that Felix was an extraneous character. Whatever, that's why the movie sucked donkey balls compared to the book.

And Armor is an incredible novel as well. Can't see how it could possibly be made into a film but well worth a read.

Book is far better than the film.

Fav bit wasn't in the movie - the Pope does some vampire asskicking!

Interesting. I thought the film was dumb fun and I had a great time with it. But how can a novel with a retarded title such as Vampire$ be any good? I'm talking about that "$" sign, it just makes me roll my eyes. It's almost as bad as if he (she?) had called the novel VampireZ.

Read it, Wetbones. You won't regret it. One of the best vamp novels in print, and the movie's not fit to shine its shoes.

And being a horror fan, you know full well that you can't judge something just by its title -- e.g. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc.

It makes sense when you realize that the title is the name of the vampire hunters' company. Killing vampires for money - a lot.

I wouldn't mind trying the book, as I have a Goth-hangover as it were, but I hated the film beyond all power of rational thought.

It's not really gothic. The vampires are too cool to be gothic pretty boys

The book was an awesome read to me.... I was also somewhat let down by the movie.
