Ethan Hawke in Precinct 13 remake

Thread Starter
Quoting Johnny Butane: "Hollywood Reporter has confirmed my greatest joy; Ethan Hawke is going to be in the remake of Assault on Precinct 13! If you were having a bad day, consider it officially OVER!"

Okay, my "is this sarcasm or not meter" is on the fritz... Sometimes the whole "I'm saying the opposite of what I'm really meaning" can get a bit confusing in print without a tone of voice. Johhny are you really happy about this or not? Just because, you know, Ethan Hawke is awful.

Snarky, or no?

The fate of GATTACA 2 may rest on the success of this remake.

Watch Tape and get back to me on that Ethan Hawke comment.

Great another remake. With all the sequels, comic book adaptions, remakes, and movies made about old TV shows or cartoons, I'm beginning to wonder if people even come up with original ideas anymore.

No shit. I'm starting to feel really old. I remember as a kid going back and watching films from the 30's like the old Universal Horror movies and the original "King Kong" and these were probably 50 years ago. Nowadays, we have people talking about remaking stuff from the late 70's and early 80's so a "whole new audience can see them". Why do we need an update of a film that really isn't that old? God forbid people watch movies that weren't released in the last two years.

Sad, sad news...and they've changed a major element of the plot. In the original, Napoleon Wilson was just the badass criminal who happened to be along for the ride, which made him so much cooler. The gang was attacking out of revenge for the deaths of their members.

By altering the plot to include the gang members seeking to free their majordomo, we lose the whole antihero aspect.

Two words: Fuck. This.

More importantly, Fishburn is going to give a face to the bad guy. The fact they were fighting a faceless enemy was, in my opinion, the aspect of AOP13 that let it fall into the horror genre so easily. When we all know what the bad guy looks like, it really takes away from the terror.

(hit my 300th post finally, I'm happy)

Exactly! (about the faceless enemy...noy about your 300th post happiness ) I do dig Fishburn, but part of what made 13 so cool was the faceless, unknown enemy. I mean, yeah, they had a face, you saw the 4 leaders get together and declare war on the cops, but when, as a viewer, you were put in the station house with the rest, you had no idea how many of them there were, where they'd come from next, etc. And although we knew sorta why they were attacking from the opening of the film, those trapped inside didn't. They knew the father had something to do with it, but didn't know why the gang was after him. Now all the characters inside will know exactly what's going on.

And I also have no idea if Johnny was being sarcastic or not.

But hey, always happy for JC to get more cash.

Eh, the news doesn't shatter my day...

It doesn't make me thrilled either, but whatever.

I'll go see it.

I won't like the removed plot lines (considering that they were the point and driving force of the original), but what are you gonna do?

Everyone knows Butane is a HUGE fan of Mystery Date .

don't really care about Ethan Hawke casting, but whoever they get for the Wilson role will automatically be shit.

I wonder if they'll do a hip hop remix of the main AOP13 theme like Bomb the Bass did...

I totally agree with you but you have to realize that most people, those with only a passing interest in horror or films in general, don't bother to go an rent old films, even stuff that is only a few years down the line. If it's not on some cover they don't know about it. I realized this when TCM 2003 came out. A couple of friends told me how fucking intense it was and all that and when I told them it was a remake of a film from the 70ies they were intrigued. We then spent an hour or so comparing the two versions, which was pretty cool and I think one or two of them might even check out the original now that the remake has gotten their interest.

They are not making (or rather remaking those films for or because of us but for the general public. We are a minority, we're geeks. If we mattered in the least bit, if we had the power to vote with our dollars there'd be no remakes. It may be sad but that's how our society treats older films and culture in general. That's life. Or, as Sean Bateman would say, "Deal with it."
