The Gore of the Christ

I think it would be cool if FANGORIA put Jesus' bloody face on the cover next month. I know, the US trailers are incredibly tame but in the international trailers you see Jesus' palms nailed to the cross in close-up with blood spurting everywhere, you see him get whipped a few times and he looks like a half-skinned victim of the Cenobites. If this film escapes the MPAA intact it will surprise and shock people with how brutal it is. Not in an exploitative manner, I'm sure as this is a Mel "I'm a religous nut" Gibson film and as such probably devised as religous propaganda but the images are powerful and as I'm not Catholic or even Christian (or of any confession for that matter) I'm planning to go into it like I'd go into a film about any other religous text. But FANGORIA with Jesus' mug on the cover would just rule and probably cause a minor scandal. I'd love it. I'll never happen of course but if they can slap KILL BILL and PLANET OF THE APES on there, I'm sure Timpone could find an excuse for this one as well. There'll probably be more blood, guts and suffering in THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST than in some of the genre films in 2004.

To get an idea what I mean click here and then download the first Teaser Trailer.

That's an interesting idea, but I don't think it'll ever see the light of day.

No, because they were not forced down my throat by the community at large meaning I could or would be able to make an educated choice rather than have it force fed to me before I had any answers of my own. Horror fascinates me because it's everything I've been told is wrong, pussy fascinates me because I'm not married and I find the idea of one man saving mankind a little like Neo on a baaad acid. Thanks to religion I’m interested in all I should shy from; thanks!

Not to argue semantics but pose this question to someone who hasn't been beaten to death by God in every facet of life and maybe the answer would be a different one. Show me the story of Christ in a way that is true and not sooooo fucking by the numbers. It’s like sex in junior high; you don’t know what the fuck you’re doing and yet you think you’re the king nonetheless. I hope the movie does well and I hope it’s gory as hell since if anything in the bible is true it proves that people are savages and any censorship of said violence will equate to suppression to what so many folks truly believe to be fact.

Let the frogs fall.

The scene where Jesus makes the zombie's head explode is sweet.

I think that is what Gibson is trying to do, atleast from what I've read, an all out account of the last hours of Christ in all it's gory detail (atleast as close to the truth as can be known). I don't want to argue religion, everyone has the right to their own beliefs. I happen to be a Christian and won't be seeing this movie, atleast in theatres, because I find this type of movie upsetting.

To be fair, if you go to the religous boards of this forum, it's been my experience that the atheiests are much worse than the religous people who supposedly 'shove their views down your throat'. Atheiests seem to push their views as the only one that matters constantly.

What's that saying about glass houses and all?

It's only been rated 15 in the UK. Had a few drinks with a BBFC bod the other day. It's brutal, but not exploitative, true to life, but not sensationalised was the BBFC's rationalisation. Saving Private Ryan and Braveheart got the same. for the same kind of reasoning.

I think that any movie which uses a lot of slow motion photography (this seems to be the case with TPOTC) to show graphic violence is not 'true to life' and therefore (probably) exploitative.

In any event - two hours of absolute gore sounds terribly unappetizing.

BBFC termonology, not mine. Fickle fuckers that they are...

As a Christian this is a movie that I want to see. So many "Christian" films refuse to show the violence. Because of that Christ's death is always very clean and bloodless. The point of his death is that he gave everything for us. To show that it should be bloody and hard to watch. You should almost feel his pain. It should be shocking.

I would be susprised if this was released unrated or NC-17. I don't think Mel Gibson would cut it for the MPAA and after paying for it with his own money he has that right.

I am buying my tickets for this today. We are taking our youth group to go see it. I have been teaching sunday school and have been a youth sponcer off and on for about a decade. I have done several lessons where I talk about and have shown illustrations about the brutality of crucifixions. I applaud Mel Gibson for doing this film and not pulling his punches. I hope that it is as good as I've been hearing. It would be nice to see a non corny Christian film.

It's easily the most violent depiction of the last days of Christ on film. If you're going to take your kids, you might be a little uncomfortable. The whipping scene, especially, does not hold back. It's horrific.

I don't consider THE PASSION religious propaganda, I just fear that it might be. This fear stems from the fact that Christianity and especially Catholicism has a very long history of forcing their worldview onto people and thinking that they - and they alone - know what is right. Buddhism doesn't have that kind of history but actually I'd also be suspicious and wary if it were a film made about Buddha or the Dalai Lama, especially if it'd come from a filmmaker that is as fanatic about his faith as Mel Gibson. I hope I'm wrong. I will go into the film with an open mind. But things like the quote below scare me:

My third prediction is that the faith of millions of Christians will become more fervent as Passion uplifts and inspires them. Passion will propel vast numbers of unreligious Americans to embrace Christianity. The movie will one day be seen as a harbinger of America's third great religious reawakening. - Rabbi Daniel Lapin

Rich makes an excellent point- putting passion into a film is nothing to apologize for ... I applaud Gibson, or anyone for that matter, who puts personal view, passion and emotion into a film ... If more filmakers would have the chutzpah to do this, we the audience would be the better for it ...

What hypocrites those are who bask in the idea of free speech as long those images/views are offending to others and not themselves ...

I have changed my mind. I didn't want to see this film because I know it is going to be very difficult for me to watch, but after reading an article I feel like I have to see it. I guess I won't be the only one in the theater crying.

Anyone know when this hits UK?
