Minnesota Nights

I haven't been here all my life, and I don't even care for all of it's culture... but this state is great. and the girls are beautiful and the weather is more than tolerable.

maybe I should work for the tourism bureau...

but we do have a lot of fat middle-aged men who love Toby Kieth, Arctic Cats, and guns and don't care for homosexuals or change for that matter.

It's interesting, by and large I don't care for the state as a whole. There are really nice places and good people but I also agree with you Stuber that much of Minnesota is filled with some really really closed minded people.

I cannot say enough good things about Minneapolis though. I love this city! It is clean, progressive, active. The park system is one of the best I have ever seen in a city. With the exception of London I wouldn't want to live anywhere else (and I wouldn't live in London unless I had some serious wealth).

Tolerable?TOLERABLE?

What particular aspects of Minnesota culture do you dislike?
Lutefisk?
Fancy Ray?

I have to say,I've only lived in one other state(Colorado)and spent about 2 months in San Fransisco. But damn,Minneapolis and St.Paul are quite clean compared to San Fran(sorry kids),and you don't have people in your face every 3 minutes.

Some things I've disliked over the years:

1.Weather-I don't like snow.I don't like bitter cold.I don't like people who drive in the snow,especially in trucks.I don't like Snow Emergencies.

2.Arts-We have ample venues and resources for patrons and artitsts, but I'm not so sure things are supported as they would be in say,NYC.So many artists end up leaving for the coasts, not much ever lasts here.Legendary clubs like First Avenue are rumored to be in danger of closing,a jazz club in St.Paul closed after less than a year of being open(St.Paul-Ghost Town). Not to mention plenty of unique, underground artists don't find it viable to tour or visit our humble state=getting the shaft.

3.Taxes-aren't we in the top 10 of high taxes?I don't get into politics, but every year it's more taxes, more taxes.Either that or cut budgets.Sure, let fire departments resort to advertising to help their situation.

4."Minnesota Nice"-I've never been to the East Coast, but the purported bluntness of said people would be a refreshing change I think.I'm not exactly blunt myself, but some of the two-faced/say one thing to my face another behind my back attitudes are really irritating.Let me just say it,IMO I think more Minnesotans aren't honest about their intolerance with other cultures-"Oh no no no,I am NOT a racist.!"

5.Lack of distinct culture-We have nothing.Wrigley field.Chinatown.Little Italy.Haight-Ashbury.Brooklyn Bridge. We have very few nationally/world recognized landmarks,or places of interest. No "scene".Actually I'm quite tired of seeing movies and shows with people talking all"Hey,I'm from Philly!""It's got that New Yawk Flava!""Hey,I'm from Jersey, and you dont' mess with us!"Minnesota has no identity in that regard, what is "Minnesota flavor"?THere is none.Even things that come from Minnesota are not centralized, like in New York you have all these communities where the artists live and work,or it's something you can go down and see/be a part of.

We've had the so called"Minneapolis sound"due to the likes of Prince and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. But when was the last time they were in town? They are businessmen, they have no connection to the local scene, maybe in 1981 they did,but not now, despite their success.

What's to Like:
1."Quality of Living"-It ain't Compton,at least where I live.People aren't in your face all the time,you can be left alone.There is a relatively easy-going vibe,or maybe it's just that passive thing.

2.Weather-I hate winter,I'll take rain anyday. But nothing beats the contrast of below zero and snow on a Monday and 60 degrees and sunny on a Friday.

3.Places of Interest-For me,I cherish the last vestiges of non-corporate giant stores, like Shinders,Big Brain,Let it Be Records..I would be sorely disappointed if/when these places expire.Just because they are there, not that the service is spectactular. There's just something more pleasing about a dyed hair, tattooed, pierced alterna-freak elitist being rude to me while I make a purchase compared to the know nothing soul sucking giant independent swallowing chain store employee.

Lived there and I agree completely. But hey, Austin had the Gear Daddies so there's that at least.

Is someone forcing you to live there? Are you being held captive?

Umm, I'm still in High School, so kind of...yeah.

I am glad I am Packer fan instead of a slave to the Vikequeens. God I wish football season would start again.

Amen, brother. Amen.

I see that the Vikes play the Packers on Christmas Eve.

Is this the year that things return to normal and the Packers beat the Vikes in Green Bay and Minnesota beats the Packers in the Dome?

I guess I would prefer things to be that Green Bay wins at the Lambeau and The Vikes take the dome but I don't really care if the series is split. Yeah I am a die hard Pack fan, but all three of my roomies are from Minnesota, so as long as we split the series I am happy. I really like Minnesota as a state and would probably cheer you guys in every other sport than Football. That's just the way it is. Some people say the Packers vs. Bears is the best rivalry in the division, but in my lifetime the Vikes have been the the team worry about so...I still can't belive the Eagles converted on 4 and 26. I read on ESPN that the odds of that play actually working in that situation was like 1 in 417. Un-Fucking-Believable. Any way, at least the Draft came and went and gave us someting to think about until about August.

"by the time the airline cancels this flight, which they will sooner or later, you'd have more of a chance to find a three-legged ballerina than you would a hotel room. "

How did the Pack do in the draft?

Did they pick up a cornerback to replace Mike McKensie? What's up with the dreads on your cornerbacks by the way?

I have to agree with what you said about Minnesota and everything. I love Wisconsin,(especially up north around the Rice Lake area) except when it comes to the Packers. I never use to hate the Packers, until Brett Favre came around. The Pack-Vikes rivalry is the best in football, I think.

Love your quote from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Here's another one:

"We'd have better luck playing pick-up sticks with our butt-cheeks, than we do getting a flight out of here before daybreak."

I love Minnesota, but not the Vikings. I've moved around a lot (Colorado, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Virginia and now here), so I came close to being a fan of many other teams...

but when Majkowski was the strarter, I was pre-teen and started paying attention to sports. When he got benched I was surprised cause I thought he rocked... so eventually, just paying attention to the Packers turned into actually rooting for them. And then I moved to Minnesota. So now I'm a Packer fan, but it didn't really have anything to do with living in Wisconsin.

This is what I've observed between the two species of the typical Packer/Viking fans: Packer fans seem to think everyone on the their team is worthy of a pro-bowl bid , and when things go wrong they do a 180 on the players and start saying they suck...with the exception of #4, he is usually never at fault. Viking fans also think everyone on their team is All-pro, and when things go wrong they claim luck for the other team or cheating. Packer fans hate Randy Moss cause he is a "punk", Viking fans hate Favre because he is a "baby".

For the record, I don't hate Randy Moss. I do, however, hate that he catches passes for touchdowns in games against the Packers. Because that isn't good for GB.

There was no point to this post, but yes: the MIN/GB rivalry is much bigger than it gets credit for. But I will say this, despite the Bears, like the Lions, losing the majority of their games, they always play a good game to the end.

Well, this thread is long dead, but I'm throwing my two bits in anyhow. I've lived in St. Paul for about four years now, and I really couldn't be happier. It's true what people say about downtown, though... no reason to go there except shows at the Xcel, summer festivals on Harriet Island (Irish Fair defines summer for me), Winter Carnival, and of course jury duty at the old courthouse. I prefer it to Minneapolis, actually. There's more history over here.

Downtown Minneapolis is great. It's a far cry from Manhatten but still a nice place. Even though First Avenue is gone which makes me sad.

I have an unhealthy attraction towards Uptown. Whenever I go the Cities, it's got to include a stop in Uptown.
