The Eye

Sorry if there was already a thread on this. I did a search and nothing came up.

How many people have seen this? I got the north american release. In Cantonese but with english subs.
I thought it was awesome. I havent seen too many Asian suspence flicks. But There is something about this style of filmmaking that's so clean and unique. The transitions and the way scenes ended was also pretty odd to me, as I'm used to the familure western way of filmmaking.

Though this wasn't the scariest movie I've seen. It was a great story. It handled itself with class and subtlety. I loved it.

Anyone else see it? what did you think of it?

I enjoyed it.

Some of the parts had me shifting uncomfortably in my seat -- others had me jumping out of it entirely.

Felt it dragged a little towards the end though.

I love this movie. Maybe more than I should, but I don't care. It's one of my favorite horror films ever.

I really liked this movie. The elevator scene really got to me, I didn't ride the elevator at work for a couple weeks after seeing it.

Has anyone noticed a picture of an old lady to the right of the girl when she doesn't recognize her picture? I don't know if there's actually an old lady sitting there or if its an effect to show the dead but I got pretty creeped out by it.

those types of films usually leave the english audience in wonder

as with Cure

Suicide Club

Double Vision

they all drive a message home within the last minutes of the film...but I don't blame them or fault them for it since it is FAR superior to the shit we have been cranking out.

I liked The Eye, but wasn't blown away by it. In retrospect I wish I'd waited for the Region 1 disc rather than jump all over it the first chance I got a couple of years ago.

The 'elevator scene' and the 'chair scene' were really the only parts that got to me. The rest I thought was good, but not spectacular.

On a related note, the trailer for the sequel is now online HERE.

Holy shit. That trailer looked awesome. But is the girl in the tailer who is having the baby the blind/newly-able eyed girl from The Eye? I bet she had a kid with the doctor from the first one.

I'd put a baby in her

Bubbly blonde Butane blurted on the original here.

And allow me to pimp my own critical wares from when it screened at the 2002 London Frightfest here.

when you see Jim's in a review, you know it's old

... awesome film

I thought it was ok. The end was trying too hard to be Hollywood and lost it for me. There were a few good frights but nothing overwhelming. Asian horror hit its peak with Audition and Evil Dead Trap. The rest are average, imo. including the highly overrated Ringu.

Mucho agreement. I saw it in a little art house cinema (the only one in Arkansas, apparently) and it has some great creepy moments, but the ending was just too "western" (read "Hollywood") for me.

My favorite things were the quiet creepy bits--esp. the first "blurry" ghost (that really got to me for some reason...partly the ghost, and partly the idea that she couldn't be sure it wasn't a real person, even though it was a spirit... ), the mother-and-child at the food stand, when Mom whips out the demon tongue...that was just so WRONG...and my all time favorite, the ghost in the window of the subway that few people even notice. Trust me, it's CREEPY.

But the end just killed it for me. Good, but not great.

I liked it, especially the first half (hospital - elevator - calligraphy room...) but for some reason I got the feeling that I was watching 2 or 3 movies at the same time. I don't really remember what made me think that but I felt that the beginning, the part where they leave and the ending didn't really blend together.

On as scale of 1-10 I say that it was pretty damn good

Caught this film on DVD a few months ago. I agree that it dragged a bit and felt like it had seperate movies in it. They took too long to set up that the main chick was seeing shit. But once she starting investing the background of the eye donor, I thought the movie picked up again. The ending was a bit over the top, but overall I thought the movie was pretty good. Much better than the crap Hollywood puts out these days.

Wow. This is the scariest movie I've seen in ages. Bought it sight unseen based on SJR's reccomendation, and I'm so glad that I did. The last 20 minutes were kind of weak, but...

The elevator.

The sound of chains dragging up the stairwell.

The blurry old woman in the hallway.

The "Get out of my chair" girl.

The deli.

The elevator. The fucking elevator. STAY OUT OF THE ELEVATOR!

Holy crap, this was a great horror movie. After suffering through Gothika twice in a row, this was exactly what I needed to watch tonight. I loved it.

It's good to know that someone else was as freaked out by the elevator scene as I was. IMO definitely one of the creepiest scenes ever (if not THE creepiest). Just watched Ju-On: The Grudge over the weekend and it might possibly be the scariest movie I have ever seen.

.I worked in a mental hospital on the graveyeard shift and one night, whilst taking vital signs, I went into this new patients room that I had not met. Upon entering I put the cuff around his arm while he slept......it was about 3 A.M..........25 year old black guy.......he woke up and looked over at me.

1/4th of his face was just.......GONE

I missed a step and kept on with the vitals and got the fuck out of that room.

Then I berated a nurse for not telling me about that shit

seemed that he had a Life-Tumor or something that required the removal of half of his head

I'll help beat a dead horse...

The elevator scene was great.

The "so cold" scene was creepy too.

A decent movie, and I'm looking forward to the sequel.

For chills, in my opinion, lately you can't beat the Asian movies.

I think if the dentist makes my face look like Pumpkinhead tomorrow I'll pull out the couch bed and get a bottle of scotch and play camp-out in the living room and watch this one again....
