Children shouldn't play with dead things

i did a search for this one and didn't get any recent hits.

i picked this up at suncoast video on dvd for $9.99. i had fond memories of watching this back in the day on tv on the local uhf stations(added alot to it's character).

anyways, i think it's a well done little zombie movie and it's pretty creepy. i couldn't believe "bob clark" of "a christmas story" fame actually did this movie too. so that was a cool bonus.

as for a quick run down of the plot, a group of teenagers(though they all look more in their 20's) go to a remote island to film some movie or something. they end up digging up a corpse and then recite some satanic prayers that end up raising the island's dead who happen to be the worst of the worst-murderers, rapists, the gang's all there for sure.

we get some really cool "zombies rising" shots from the graves as they start their attack on our distressed group of walking meat.

they end up making their final stand in an abandoned cabin. btw, did i tell you that earlier in the film, one of the guys brings the corpse in the house and marries it?

sorry about not getting the names down as i watched it last night but really didn't take in the names(just watched the zombie action).

for a "pg" rated movie, this one is surprisingly bloody. back when this movie was shot, there still wasn't pg-13 and it wasn't bloody/gory enough to garner the "r" rating i presume so they stuck it with a pg. if this was released today, it would *easily* get the pg-13 rating.

these zombies are slow and mean with a healthy appetite. no running zombies here. most of them look crusty. the effects team did some great work on the zombie makeup imho.

we get some good zombie chowing on humans scenes but they're pretty clean(bloody) but not gory.

clark's directing style gets the job done. it has a "documentary" type feel to it but i don't think it was intentional.

the actual dvd presentation is well done. seems like they've cleaned up the print a bit. though admittedly it had been ages since i last saw it. there's a menu with scene selections, the biography of the lead actor and bob clark the director along with the movie's trailer.

a fun little zombie movie, it's only $9 on dvd, has the same director as "a christmas story" and is a million times better than "house of the dead". in other words-go buy it now if you don't have this little gem.

!

I got it for 5 bucks on a double disc with the Undertaker and his Pals......I was a little dissapointed with CSPWDT..because it was so damned slow and the pay offs were few....but other than that...pretty great atmosphere

Greatest movie ever made.

Skinner, you should track down Bob Clark's "Death Dream". It's another fine schlocky horror treat with appearances from many CSPLDT cast members.
It's bloody good fun. It's also genuinely creepier than Children.

I really want to get Deathdream....isn't Blue Underground releasing it on DVD sometime soon?

April, I believe. I really liked DEATHDREAM, and I think a remake is a cool idea, which apparently Eli Roth is prepping.

CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS is a minor classic in my book ... Aside from the obvious plot elements, I think that THE EVIL DEAD owes alot to this film, in particualr the shots from inside the fireplace ....

Orville kicks Bub's ass if you ask me

Dude....Bub is GOD

I bought it on VHS for $0.99. Damn, it's boring. I held the fast forward button down for the last 30 minutes thinking something on the screen would change. Uh, maybe the last minute or so even mixed it up. It started out cheesy, cheap but intriguing.

If you doubt me, watch the entire movie on fast forward and see just how boring it is for a horror movie. Nothing freakin happens.

I'm gonna have to back you up on that one. I'd heard a lot of great things about this movie for years, and when it popped up on DVD at a local shop, I rented it for my bloodsucking freak of a wife, but it bored the two of us to tears. I got the camp and the performances were kind of hippy goofy, made it a laugh, but the zombies were terminally lame and the movie moved way, way, way too slow. The worst review I can give a horror flick is if it puts my wife to sleep, and it did.

I will give it that I'm not the biggest zombie fan, so it's gotta be lively to catch my interest as a zombie flick.

Nothing like watching this late night, in the dark, all alone as a kid. Oddly enough back home in Clevleand, which BC woudl use to such a dramatically different end in A Christmas Story.

But yes, it is slow... and it builds... and the atmosphere is what really sets this apart from other low budget fare. And basing it on a bad acting troupe allows bad actors to be.. wel... bad actors... and yet be PERFECT in their roles.

And when you do watch it alone in the dark, and actualy give it a chance, the Orville payoff is remarkably well done. That one you don't forget.

Also to note... you have to love the cameo (if you can call it that) form this troupe in another great under-rated classic... Motel hell.

Now, I am still going to have to go with Bub being the superior walking stiff, but Bub never has a single scene anywhere close to as creepy as Orville.

I did watch it late at night with the candles lit and the mood set and eager to get my horror on, but it just left me flaccid and put the wife to sleep. I can get why people might dig it, especially if they saw it when they were a kid, I love plenty of crap because of the attachments I have from childhood, but this movie didn't work for me. I kept waiting for some big pay off and I never got it.

hehe... oddly... when I picked up this DVD I watched it at night with my wife also. She also found it slwo and was falling asleep. But I refused to let her do anything else, and let her get drowsy while watching it. But I made it a point to ask questions and such to keep her awake.

At the end she about peed her pants... and was mad at me the next day because she had nightmares.

This is kindof a film like Audition or Burnt Offerings in that you need the final last minutes to truly appreciate it fully for what it is. Whether intentional build or not, the ride is slow and gruelling in each for their own reasons... and the end is a total payoff.

But you have to be fully into that ride to see that at the end.

well it might have something to do with "nostalgia" so that's why i sing the movie's praises.

it *is* hard to *read* the film if it's your first time watching it because it seems like it could go complete camp and comedy or go drama/hardcore horror. in that, i agree it's an "odd" film to size up.

this is right up there with the "dead" films in my book for best zombie movies ever.

bob-i'll try to go look for that other flick "death dream". didn't he also do a killer movie based around christmas?

seems like clark wanted to go the horror route with his career but ended up making a christmas classic with "a christmas story". that's pretty damn cool.

on a side note, Deathdream is being released May 25th on DVD

Clark's career is all over the board. He also directed Porky's and Baby Geniuses. The slasher movie you mention is "Black Christmas", generally considered by horror fans to be his best.

Orville would kick Bub's ass. Bub is a big cry baby. Orville is a black widow. And he's one creepy motherfucker.

I too have a nostalgic love for "Children". Saw it as a kid on the late show too. Those final scenes can still cause trauma. Where's my sequel?!

It is amateurish, campy, and largely cinematically inept, but still, I like it.

And if you watch the whole movie without fast forwarding, admittedly it does plod a bit, but the "payoff" of Orville sitting up in bed when the asshole director comes in...to me that shot makes the movie.

Well, that and the oft repeated "I actually pissed my pants!" line.

Fun stuff. Not a classic, but still, I can't hate it.
