Reminds me more of the Tree of Life from Carnivale. Fantastic work by the artist.

Which according to the mythology from the show resembles a Mayan tree or something related.

Really good tattoo btw.

Trekking in the Simian mountains, Ethiopia.

Got to almost 15,000 feet. I don't know how I'm still alive.

WOW!! Wow! That is a glorious view, Ali - good for you, congrats on the climb!
Amazing! How was the trip down?

That's really cool Ali, nice work.

Ali, that's amazing.

Yours is pretty amazing too Cocoa. I see you thought long and hard about that design but what exactly was the inspiration behind that particular choice? If it's not too personal an answer obviously.

No, it's not too personal, I shared the story in this very thread.

A year ago this week, I went to Jamaica for my best friend's birthday celebration, and on the way back from her party at Margaritaville, her son was killed by a guy drag racing right in front of the resort where we were staying. Needless to say, we've all had trouble coping.

When I got home, I would drive to the beach and park under this huge tree, day after day while staring out at the waves, for hours at a time. It was the only thing that really brought me comfort, the thought that maybe his life went on in another way, a way I couldn't fully understand. Circle of life, tree of life.
I'm not religious at all, so I guess it brought me peace the way prayer or church would a religious person.
Maybe I was just grasping at straws because my mind couldn't really make sense of what had happened, and the traumatic event it experienced. I don't know, but it did and it still makes sense to me in a way I can't describe.

I don't want to be a Debbie Downer in this thread or anything, but the image stayed with me daily, and I knew that I was going to get it, it was just a matter of timing and finding the right person to do it.

Though, if someone looked at it and thought, 'Cool! The tree from The Fountain!' I would totally be okay with that. Same concept, awesome film.

That's not a bummer of a story at all Cocoa, it starts off really tough but in the end that story's all about hope. Following the worst of circumstances you do what you gotta do to get yourself right again and your way seems admirable and very healthy to me. There can't be many better reasons to get a tattoo than something like that.

I guess I should check this thread more often too, I must have missed your story the first time.

This is pretty much what I thought. I'm sorry for your friend's loss; I think you found a healthy, personal way to honor and remember her son and transcend the grief.
Thanks for the compliments, all.

A lot easier. Drove back down in a SUV. Like I was going to walk anywhere else other than a reaaally close vending machine after that. Best thing about the trip, saw these things call gilettas (sp?), a cousin of baboons but with a red spot on their chest instead of their butts. So cool!
Cocoa, I'm so sorry! I had no idea, but I think that's a really lovely way to honor your friend's son. It's a beautiful concept, and a really positive way to channel something so sad.

Hadn't done this in quite a while;

I'm the one that doesn't look like a sock puppet.
Forgive my ignorance, but how do you insert an image? When I try it just asks for the URL. But my photos aren't on the web, they are on my desktop.
I think you have to upload your pictures to something like Photobucket or Imageshack or the likes. There you´ll get a link for the upload.

I don´t think it is possible to upload straight from your computer.
You can't upload from your desktop, so as Jan said..You'll need Photobucket or ImageShack. I use ImageShack, and it works great.

Here's a real goofy webcam video that I made in my monkish barracks quarters.

I really wanted to use a squeaky hammer toy, but couldn't find one!

That's in the Chapada Diamantina national park area in January 2008. About 6 hours drive west of Salvador. (The city, not the Oliver Stone movie). Fantastic place. We also went to Iguazu falls, Rio and a few other places. I'll post some other photos later.

Given that I've spent the day taking the piss out of Kevin Smith I felt it would be appropriate to show y'all my ugly mug. Standard HD Camera at an odd angle shot, but it's the best I could come up with (I don't tend to keep pictures of myself, for obvious reasons).

There's entirely too much self-deprecation here for my liking. That's not one of those empty "oh, stop that!" responses someone uses when they don't have the balls to reply honestly either. You have nothing to worry about.

That's a lovely picture, Ken. You both look so happy.
Yeah Spike you look normal enough to me.

Thanks Bobby, that picture is from before we were married it was the first time I went to Essex to meet her sister.
So I wasn't able to upload the picture to Photobucket, so I'll just link it here.

We don't normally go about dressed like that, it's from our friend's 80's party.

bun in the oven

Only about 10 weeks to go before my son is born. I'm on restricted activity, though, as I started having contractions a week ago. So far, so good, but we will see how many of those 10 weeks we make it through before he actually makes an appearance.

Congratulations! I hope everything goes well for you.

Holy shit. My wife and I are in about the same boat. She's got 7 weeks to go (sorry no picture, she'd kill me) and we just spent Thursday night/Friday morning in the hospital because of early contractions and a weird lack-of-baby-movement situation.

We'll be happy as long as Bonk (our nickname for the kid) arrives after the baby shower in 2 weeks because we haven't got shit here in our apt. No crib, no stroller, no nothing. So yeah....
Don't worry, Donde. Once you're past week 32, the risk to baby is low, and remember that the majority of babies born in the world don't have fancy nurseries. And you can get a car seat at the last minute if you need to, or borrow one from a friend (or borrow a ride home from a friend). I wouldn't buy a car seat off trademe but resources like that are good to get used cheap baby stuff. Also check with all friends and friends-of-friends, you can get lots of baby stuff that way!
Donde, congrats on your impending arrival.

I suggest foregoing the changing table. We've changed our three babies using a mat on the floor. You know what the great thing is about a mat on the floor? A baby can't fall off the floor!

This was taken in a Rainforest Cafe in the Houston Galleria. The gorillas weren't working, and this one looked very sad, so I took the opportunity to get a pretty funny picture.

Here's me posing with some swag I picked up today at the Danish Film Institute:

For those who can't make it out, I'm holding a copy of this.

Ha ha. I have to show this to my wife. Last time we went to the movies, after her post-film rest stop, she came out and asked me why I was glowering at that ALICE poster. I didn't even realize I was doing it. To me, the poster achieved a kind of sad greatness in that it summed up everything that I felt was wrong with the movie. It must have been written all over my face.
