Microsoft shows off what could be XBOX 2 technology?

XNA - Microsoft's base for next gen stuff. (wmv at the bottom of the page)

I dunno. the only thing that's peaked my interest is that Film Noir demo as it looks rather ace. too bad instead of actual announcements Microsoft is going the "let's show off pretty graphics which will probably not end up being possible on the new machine" road. And am I alone in thinking that this whole "it's about software" stuff is just a way of saying "no, we're not going to show our specs for XBOX 2 till Sony shows their specs for PS3 so we can go beyond it"?

Nope, you're not wrong. If I were either Microsoft or Nintendo, I'd wait for Sony to announce or for hell to freeze over. Sony's system is not aging well, regardless of the hype you read in the magazines and the continuous reassurances that the PS2 experience is "nearly on par" with the XBOX and Cube in every multiplatform release. No, it isn't nearly on par. It looks and sounds like shit relative to the XBox.

So far that hasn't put a dent into sales, but it HAS influenced major developers to move lucrative franchises off the platform. That's going to happen more and more the longer this generation lasts. Sony is in the position that they really must do something or risk losing developers. The problem isn't immediate... they have 12 to 18 months, one good Christmas season left in the PS2. But by Christmas 2005 they must have a new system on the shelves or they will be in a world of hurt.

revenues from the PSP will be just fine during 2005. the PS3 is due the year after. Sony is not hurting this current generation; they have more than 66% marketshare worldwide with a tie ratio in the high teens at least. Sony is now earning pure profit on PS2 hardware sales given that production was greatly streamlined over the past 18 months. Nintendo has been making profits on GC hardware sales for some time now; Microsoft continues to bleed with every Xbox console sale.

all three players, however, are healthy enough to participate in the next generation.
