When I can't Sleep, this is what I do...

Admit it... You don't sleep. Let me (us) know what in the fuck you do at night when you don't sleep. I don't care how weird it gets.

I suffer from insomnia and am constantly trying to bide my time at night. So this is what I do...I type on the computer or sometimes drink large amounts of alcohol or sometimes both. Sometimes I'll turn on a fan and speak into it, sounding like Stephen Hawking, for a couple of hours. Sometimes I sit outside, staring at the stars and smoking a Camel Light. Sometimes I talk to food.

What do you do when night falls and you cannot sleep?

I draw.

I fill page after page in my sketchbooks.
I usually jerk one out and then see if that works.

9 times out of 10 it does.

Insomniac here as well. It comes and goes. I put on Futurama DVDs, shut my eyes and listen to the commentary tracks. Not because they are boring, I just find them to be good company in the quiet hours of the night.

I draw too. Forgot about that. Doodle mostly. Really bad.

Do any of you ever actually succumb to those bad late night chicken baking machine commercials? The rotisserie(spelled right?) ones? The guy with the plastic looking face spinning these whole chickens around?

Late night infomercials give me anxiety attacks so no, no I don't.
No.. but there always comes a point where I think to myself..

"You know.. I really DO need an automatic egg-sheller."

Do any of you ever have the urge to mow at night? I did recently. Granted, I didn't but I thought about it. How weird. Guess that's the delirium.

I'm a big fan of the Magic Bullet Blender infomercial.

That is a pretty cool gadget. I really hate those thin shelled eggs, you can't ever peel those things without fucking up the goods.

Yeah, but it's gotta be the single most esoteric kitchen gadget there is. I mean, there's absolutely no other use for it than shelling eggs.

Most other crap household wares have multiple AMAZING USES!!!! But this.. just the one.

What about the guy with the knives that are as thin as chewing gum wrappers? Seen that guy? The knives can cut through, like, eighty inch steel sheets.

And what about the Daisy Fuentes 'get in shape' show or whatever the hell that is.

Fuentes can try and sell me pilates videos anytime she wants. Chef Tony however, can suck it.

Sometimes too, I crank up a band called Headswim, from the mid '90's or some Cure. Kind of mixes with the cerebral fluids a bit. Sort of psychedelic in so many ways or whatnot. That time of night makes you realize things that otherwise 'sleepy' people would not.

Or I'll put Muddy Waters on. Always gets me. I'm 35 so I'm young but still have enough of an appreciation of music that I can identify and play it while I sit here and see 24 hours a day of the world for every day.

I almost thought about buying that video just so I could watch those hot chicks working out. But that's another story.

Does anyone else who suffers from insomnia make weird food during the night? I do.

And I've grown to love the Girls Gone Wild commercials on Comedy Central every other ten minutes between 1:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. It's not that I don't appreciate the female body but, damn, after awhile, with an insomniac's mind you have to start actually giggling at this stuff. And I'm a grown man. It's so freaking weird.

And Real Sex on HBO. That comes on late. That's a weird show.

Billy Mayes rules the night time infomercial set.

I've been an insomniac for as long as I remember. My methods of dealing include:

-sketching
-music (Richard Cheese is sooo relaxing)
-surf the net (since my laptop is on my beside table)
-watch movies (mostly comedies)
-work out
I've been an on and off insomniac for the past few years. I usually:

- Surf the internet for hours and hours and hours

- Watch movies

- Listen to music

- Have some form of anxiety attack and curl up in a little ball under my sheets until the sun rises

- Write pages and pages of crap

- Drink, pop pills, smoke a joint

- Read

- Do homework

- Go for a walk

Edit: How could I forget masturbation?

I hardly ever sleep more than 2 hours a night during the week so I usually just pop on my headphones, throw in a pixies cd and read CHUD....doesn't usually make me sleepy though....but I'm sure the cans of sobe adrenaline rush don't help....I used to just smoke some herb before bed, but I'm trying to quit smoking...hence the no sleeping....

Buy Hooker. Kill Hooker. Eat Sandwich.

Yeah, I've made the evening jerk a habit. Without it, I get no sleep.

I do a similar thing. I'll turn on the surround sound system, turn the tube off and just listen to the commentary tracks in the dark. The View Askew flicks and Super Troopers have pretty good tracks. No insights to the film industry, just feels like a group of friends getting together.

Other insomniac cures:

- There's a little spot about 20 miles from my house. No city lights, no traffic, all farmland. Terrific place to go and stare up at the cosmos.

- Read. I think there's a direct correlation between the intensity of my insomnia and the amount I read. Some nights I'll start reading at 11, get caught up in the story and the next time I look at clock it's 4am.

- Rubbin' one out. To borrow from Chappelle's Show "beat my dick like it owes me money"

-Write. Usually my best/oddest ideas come to me late at night.

go to the lab, watch tv, masturbate, drink, work out, internet, cook, write, over think everything there is to possibly think about, clean, eat triscuits in bed...

and the number one thing i do late at night when i can't sleep? talk to myself...
I quote movies to myself. I have a knack for remembering film dialogue, so I just sit there endlessly saying every line in whatever movie I've been thinking of lately. Walking always helps, as does masturbation and late night anime. In no particular order.
I usually crank up the sound and just watch one loud, explosion-packed movie after the other...
I have a history test tomorrow and an art project due so tonight my nocturnal inclinations will come in handy.
I headbutt the homeless. Then I download some trailers.
Try and find the most boring DVD commentary and just snooze to that. Well, that and switching off my thoughts, as they're what keeps me awake most.
