Cable or DSL?

Putting this here because couldn' find a suitable forum and eventually want this for XBOX LIVE...

Hello all. I am disgusted to announce that I am still connecting to the internet via a 56k modem and I have had enough. I live in Kennesaw, GA and I am trying to decide...

1) Do I want to go with DSL or cable?
2) What are the pros and cons of each?
3) What are the best deals locally - all things considered (Internet service, installation, connection monthly fees, etc)?
In other words, which service, company and package is the best bang for my buck? (I want the median or low-end rather than high-end cost-wise).
4) For what its worth, I have BellSouth for my home phone service if that makes a difference.
5) I also have Direct TV if that seems a good route to go.

Here is an article I found that was only a little helpful...

We had Time Warner Roadrunner Digital Cable at our old place, had to get SW Bell DSL when we moved...we've had less outages with SW Bell.

Cable is theoretically faster...if you're the only one on it. The nifty thing about DSL is that it's pretty much the same speed.

One thing to check with Bell...how far are you away from the DSL switch and trunk?

Well, I can only go by my experience. I've gone from DSL to cable, and the experiences were vastly different.

It took me a month and a half to get Verizon DSL, and the service was mediocre. Something akin to 768/128, which was roughly somewhere between 50-75KB downloads, and a 10-15KB upload. This cost me about $35 a month.

It took me a week to get Optimum Online, and the service was, and still is pretty damn solid. I get 2MB/1MB, which is roughly a 350KB download, and a 125KB upload. This costs me about $35 a month.

The party line thing (speed degradation based on number of users) has never effected me in my area, so I'm thinking it only depends on where you are. But I've never seen my cable get anywhere near as slow as what Verizon DSL currently offers for the same price (around a 100KB download, 20KB upload).

Thanks so much guys. Anyone else?

Ryan, I am using a Cable internet connection at home. It's Acworth CableNet, but very comparable to Roadrunner and those other Cable broadband services.

I love it. Never have a problem with speed as far as PC/Internet or even Xbox Live.

Let me know when you get yoru Xbox online. Then again, you're right down the street. Just come over sometime and we can kill each other in HALO.

Thanks lraC, this is helpful info and I'll start weighing the options. I will come by sometime and commit Halo suicide since I have never played it before. Once I learn, I will be reborn, rise like a Phoenix, spread my mighty wings and...probably just be destroyed again. But it will be fun! [PS - I finally bought Star Wars: KOTOR last week and I got Splinter Cell 2 in the mail earlier this week.]

Can anyone else advise me on the best option for throwing my money away?

If you can get DSL with better than 128 upload go for it. Then you can host games, send files to people, etc better.

I've had a great experience with Cable (Cox High Speed). 566 down/166 up . As others have said, those speeds are dependent on how many other users are on the party line. Lucky for me, there appears to be few people in the immediate vicinity sharing the service. Outages have never been a problem... I can remember one single outage affecting my surfing/gaming habits in the eight months I've had broadband.

Can't really comment on DSL, I haven't used it. I have a feeling I would have to pay quite a bit more for DSL with the same bandwidth.
