Fable Hype-O-Rama!!!

Since the game is drawing closer to a definite release (Late summer is the current scuttlebutt, and the latest previews indicate that the only technical problems with the game are some frame rate issues when the action heats up. I think that this [release] may hold for a while. But, hey, you never know...), I figured that, in order to avoid threads pimping certain aspects of this forthcoming game, we could just use this one.

So, Elfman's doing parts of the score. Huzzah.

Also, The Lionhead Times has some links to some rather encouraging hands-on previews. Another good site for Fable news and info is Alter Ego. Avoid the message boards, if you know what's good for ya.

There was a new trailer released a few days ago that shows gameplay with music and voice acting as well.

100$ says it turns out like Black & White.
Uh, since every game made or published by a company is similar?

I could dig this. I liked Black and White. Also, it's a completely different game, played from a completely different perspective.

Where B&W put you in control of every toy in the box, Fable shoves you in, so that you're sniffing G.I. Joe's armpit and elbowing Optimus' crotch.
Not to mention all previews are pretty much gushing over the game...
And every preview gushed over Black and White. The reviews now...

How is this a bad thing? Black and White was fucking brilliant.

Your just pissed cuz your creature got fat.

Please. B&W is nothing more than a prettier, more evolved Tamagochi.

There's a new article up at The Lionhead Times addressing some things in the Fable "community." Plus, there's a couple of (great-looking) new screen shots accompanying the article.

You can read it here.

Blunt does not want this game to be as good as it looks, as he is a PS2 apologist .

This part is great:

I still can't get over the part in last year's E3 demo where Simon takes the hero home, where his wife yells at him. He resonds by belching in her face and running away. Just funny stuff.

Oh, yeah, word on the street is that if you're REALLY good, you'll start to attract butterflies, and just regular flies if you're REALLY evil.

From the FAQ:

Quote:
What format will Fable be released for?
Fable will be released on DVD for the Xbox® video game system.

Any famous names working on this game?
Apart from some well known people from Lionhead Studios, music celebrity Danny Elfman has composed the theme for the upcoming Xbox roleplaying adventure Fable.
I thought it was Xbox AND PC?

Gamespot's new preview

They seem to like it. There's also a pretty long video up (10 min). I could only get audio because of my shit connection, but it sounds promising.

"While Fable's gameplay was originally slated to be a very open-ended experience that had your character aging and developing based on your progress and play style, respectively, the game has since headed in a more-structured direction."
I don't like the sound of that, or the more manual character development angle they've added in...

Can't really judge until I've played it or read some in-depth stuff to see what's been changed, but one of the ideas I loved about this game was that character development was so smooth and fluid, as opposed to the 'buy/earn stat upgrades' standard RPG style. Character aging, gaining scars/skills in battle, etc. was a great idea. Is that entirely gone now?

Edited to add: The horns and halos thing? No thanks.

As for the linear gameplay - to what extent? A Morrowind-stlye amount of side missions/area to explore with a more structured main story would be perfect. Hopefully that's where they've gone with it.

Still looking forward to it more than any other game though. Did B.C. make an E3 appearance?

Fable was at E3 - saw it, didn't get to play it.

I'm mixed on this one - one, because I'm not totally sold on console based RPGs (prefering to wait until they are on PC) due to lack of portability. Of course, I'm a PC apologist. :P

I played it a good deal at E3 prala, and it actually feels much like a PC-based RPG (interface aside). You should give it a shot when it comes out... I think you'll like it.

The real-time fighting is also snazzy, though not quite as good as JADE EMPIRE's, imho.
Ok, Carl, if you say so, I'll check it out. If I don't like it, you own me a cheese sammich.
Saw the preview a little back....very impressed even if the open-ended gameplay isn't as much as it was (what have they exactly changed? I haven't heard anything different.

From what Lionhead's been saying, it's still VERY open ended. There is a main story, but there are several (quite an understatement) side quests that you can handle. Add all that to the fact that the world responds to your actions, whereby you'll be dealing with quite a few consequences to the good/evil you've wrought. I'd say that the open-endedness is still quite robust.

As for the EXP thing, Gamespot got that tidbit wrong. For a while now it's been decided that character evolution would be more natural and fluid, and one would earn experience points from combat to "purchase" new skills, like combo moves and stuff. If anything, this gives you more control over how your character fights, since the skills on your list are ones that you've selected, as opposed to moves that the character has been preprogrammed to "learn" as they grow in skill.

Now, they have decided to put a system in whereby the hardcore gamers could look up how much strength, agility, etc. a certain activity gives. For example, lugging boulders around will make your character grow stronger, but now you can access a menu and see how much your strength has gone up. Of course, this won't be completely neccessary, they probably have these stat numbers available so that some power gamers can rest easily. This has always been a major selling point on the game (no levels, but natural progress), but they've just given gamers a means of tracking their progress.

Yes, you still age. Yes, you're physical build still reflects how you've been playing.

Control Scheme

Also, if you preorder the game, you'll get a free DVD with a bunch of cool stuff on it. Mainly "The making of..." type stuff, plus a playable demo of the upcoming Sudeki.

Between this and Jade Empire im more than tempted to finally get an Xbox.

I just have trouble buying a system for games that wont be out for months and months yet.

Maybe they'll come to the PC, like KotOR eventually did.

Lionhead clears things up about the experience system:

Quote:
First, gaining experience is done in two ways. When you kill an opponent, green orbs will be dropped to the floor. By holding the right trigger on your game pad, these orbs will be sucked up by your hero, or you just run to them to pick them up. The second way to gain experience in a certain skill, spell or whatever is by using it. Fighting a lot with heavy weapons will give you more muscles and strength. Using a lot of magic will give you more Will Power and such. This is very important, as it means your character still develops completely accordingly to the way you play. This is a promise that was made a few years ago by the team.

There are several reasons for the experience orbs. It may seem a bit strange but it's in the game and makes it fun; so you have to become good at getting all the experience orbs, it's not just a matter of killing an opponent, in order to get the maximum experience out of it you also need to make sure you get all the orbs. If you really dislike this feature there is still the R-trigger to hold. You can also leave the experience orbs and get your combat multiplier up first, before absorbing them, that way they will give you more experience as you go at it, but if you get hit, your multiplier will go down and so will the experience gained from the orbs. It makes the combat experience much more reliant on skill.

This is what Dene Carter, Designer on Fable has to say about the issue:

“Actually, we provided both methods of empowering your character simultaneously. You can earn 'generic' experience, and then there's the experience you earn from 'just doing it' - using magic, combat and skill. The reason we did it this way was because (actually having the game here and playing it rather than sitting with it in our heads and merely imagining it) we found that if we didn't balance out the experience in some way, people got locked into playing one character type or another within an hour of play; if you started concentrating on swords the world began changing (e.g. the invisible creature-birthing bits you guys will never see!) and before you knew it, using your sad-assed unpracticed spells got you killed.

We thought this sucked.

So we balanced it so that you get bigger rewards for concentrating on one skill or another, but it doesn't make the game lock you into one path forever.

The end.”
EDIT: Oh, and you may want to read the rest of the article. It's the E3 diary of one of Lionhead's staff. You can read it here.

Yea well, so was Knights and so was Halo. Jade Empire and Fable will probably make it to the PC in a few years. Definately if they turn out to be major sellers.

"Exclusive" is a pretty flimsy term when your talking about 3 years or 5 years from now. Even from system to system (Grand Theft Auto? Metal Gear Solid 2?)

I'm really just not sure I wanna wait that long

What I mean is, unlike KOTOR and HALO, they aren't being developed for PC at all. Just Xbox.

If PC ports happen, it will be well down the road.

I don't see anything paticuarly special, bar being able to style your hair. And the voice acting is terrible.

I got a free XBN in the mail yesterday. It's nice when a company sends that kind of stuff out, and the amount of shiny new games coming out for the system tempts me to pick up a console.

Of course, I am reminded of Maddox's article on the subject. So, what are the advantages of the X-Box over upgrading my PC or picking up a different console like the GameCube or the PS2?

XBOX's edge over the other consoles: Better graphics, and the hard disk allows for the potential for some really cool games we have yet to see.

I don't feel qualified to answer your PC question, however.

XBOX's edge over both: Fable and Jade Empire
