What are the "referrals" on all our profiles?

I was looking at some profile tonight (don't remember who's) and noticed that there was now a "referral" line in the profile. I checked mine too, and there it was again.

So my question, what is that line for?

I'm guessing that it is the number of times we've been referred to an administrator/moderator about our behavior on the boards. But I was thinking it could also be the number of people we have referred to join the boards.

I'm leaning more towards my first guess, but I still would like to know for sure.

So, anyone know?

From the faq section of the boards, disguised under the question "what are referrals?"

The administrator may have enabled referrals, which allows you to be credited for any new users you invite to the forum.

You gain referrals by promoting The CHUD.COM Message Boards using your unique referral link. The link you should use as your referral link is this:

http://chud.com/forums/index.php?referrerid=42

Each time someone follows this link to The CHUD.COM Message Boards and registers as a new member, your referral count will be incremented by one. The number of referrals you have can be viewed in your profile.

Your administrator will have more information on any prizes or rewards that may be given out for referrals. Please be courteous when promoting The CHUD.COM Message Boards by not spamming other web sites with your referral link just to gain referrals.
