What a manly movie. Not only does it feature the flowing mullet of Rod Piper, but also the legendary unchoreographed fight scene between Piper and Keith David. "Formaldehyde face" indeed.

And to think, that fight was all over a pair of sunglasses.

wonderful little movie. it looks like it had the kind of budget that ed wood was familiar with, but carpenter is of course a director who knows his shit quite well.

OBEY

MARRY AND REPRODUCE

"I know human beings, I've worked with human beings, and YOU sir, are no human being!"
(great tagline...paraphrasing a vice-presidential debate of the day)

Watched this as part of my weekly manly manly film group meeting.

People kept saying "so...this was made when? Last Year."

Great fucking movie. Any director who has the balls to more or less stop the story for a good 15 minutes while the two main characters have an old-fashioned fist fight is cool in my book. A scene like that would be trimmed or cut in today's films. Think about it. It wasn't a flashy fight. The camera work was basic. It was just an everyday back alley fight.

A great movie. I love it like I love all Carpenter's movie.

it's kind of hypocritical that Carpenter skewers TV and publishing in the film, but never dares to turn that satirical gaze to his own bread and butter, the movies

i dont think so Konkrete. The movie doesn't need to spell out everything for the intelligent viewer. Look, it says "THIS IS YOUR GOD" on the dollar bill, how satirical is that...damn satirical, it borders on subversion. You don't see that kind of daring on TV or the newspapers. All TV and newspapers do is regurgitate what the majority want to hear anyway.

THIS MOVIE IS SO MAN, I GROW HAIR WATCHING IT.

"You, you look OK, but her, she's real fucking ugly!"

"They Live" was Carpenter's last real great movie. His films since have been entertaining but most of them have been retreads of his old work.

It's also a shame that Piper never got any huge roles after that. He was very energetic in that film.

I can't believe Nada never got around to banging Holly. Her head did get kinda close to his groin at one point though.
