Officially Homeless

Ok, maybe not technically homeless (I am now living in my childhood home), but my house closed yesterday and all my belongs (except my clothes and PC) are on their way to Florida.

Background info? My roomate and best friend got transferred to her corporate office in Lakeland, Florida. We have shared a home for close to ten years, and after much discussion I decided that I would (eventually) make the move to Florida with her. We put the house up for sale (and honestly expected the house to be on the market for 6-8 weeks). Ten days later we had a contract. Ten days?!?! Yesh!! So after 15 days of packing, and cleaning Bekins rolled up and took everything away. Me? I am now at my dad's old house (he is retired and living in the Ozarks) and the clock has started ticking on my eventual move to the sunny state of Florida. I had obligations to my Dad (help fix up his old house for sale) and obligations to my current job (helping them with an office move). After which I will make my move to the Orlando area.

Kind of a strange feeling living in the house I grew up in again. On top of, I have none of my personal belongs with me, on top of my best friend is no longer with me. These next few months are going to be long.

I was homeless for a good month and a half last year. Being that I knew a computer lab across from an abandoned gym, I had somewhere to spend the night and somewhere to go and be social during the day. It was interesting in a Walden sorta way.

That really sucks, buddy, I wish you the best. I work in a Hostel and can empathize with you on what must be going through your head right now. Sorry to hear about your luck.

Thanks for the warm wishes!

This was all more or less planned. I just haven't been in a transitional place for over 10 years now. Kind of weird. I forgot what it was like to be in a new place (with nothing). I guess the other weird thing, is that when I get to Florida, the new house will be all set-up. She'll be the one doing the house picking (I will fly down for final word). I don't know, just strange to be in a holding pattern, whilst the new life is ready (and waiting for me to get down there).

As they say in France: c'est la vie!

Houston has it's fair share of flying insects (wood cockroaches included) so I am more than ready to battle any other flying insect. Hell, I am going from one Bush state to another Bush state. One humidity filled city to another humidity filled city. I am not expected too much change. Other than a slightly higher cost of living it will all be the same. Beaches close by? Check. No state income tax? Check. NASA close by? Check. It's all good (just need to get there already). Only major thing I am concerned about, is getting my cats down there. They both absolutely hate cars. 20 hours of yowling cats is not something I am looking forward to undertaking. Anyone have an experience in having their pets flown?

Not too worried about finding a job either. Accountants always are needed.

Actually, I'm pretty sure you'd have a better chance getting hit by a hurricane in Texas than in Florida. I've lived here 20 years and I've been in I think two hurricanes and three tropical storms, the highest which was a level 3.

They aren't very impressive. In Florida we get thunder storms worse than tropical storms, and even the level 3 was just kinda like "Man, I wish the Blockbuster were open so we could go out and rent a movie.

I actually like Florida a lot. There's something about the ocean that really soothes me (FUN FACT: No point in Florida is more than 70 miles from either the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico), and even when living in Orlando, there's the feeling that you aren't to far from the edge of the Earth.

Lakeland isn't bad. Probably a little dull, but it's only about 30 minutes from Tampa and 50 minutes from Orlando, so you probably won't be too bored.

They actually have Alligators in East Texas too.

Yentas. Yes, those you can fear.

Well, since I will not want to lose my cats, I suppose I will go the route of tranquilzers. Should I get them for me or them, I wonder?

As to hurricanes. Meh. I've lived through a few, and a few tropical storms too. Bring them on.

Werbal, I must be attracted to the ocean. I have never lived more than 70 miles from the beach. I am looking forward to checking out the beachs on the Atlantic side.

I already have a few friends in Lakeland, and since I will be close to Orlando and Tampa, I am not too worried about the night life. All and all, Florida seems to be a nice "fit."

Gulf beaches are better, IMO. Atlantic beaches have more to do, but Gulf beaches are SO much prettier and more relaxing.

Gulf beaches are pretty east of the Mississippi, all the water off the coast of Texas is shit colored, due to all the sediment the might Mississip pushes out.
