Jon Stewart.. and the Daily show

I think it is one of the most honest shows there... its funny, relevant, and smart. It is really ironic that a fake news show is more truthful the all the news channels out where.

I prefer to get my news from the Daily show rather than CNN...

As for Fox.... I think they should come out of the closet and confess that they are a fake news channel..... maybe then, I will start taking them seriously.

what do you all think?

I LOVE the Daily Show, but it's not good to get your news from them.

Colbert is the man.
Like the above reply, Daily Show is one of the funniest shows out there but I wouldn't necessarily get all my news from them. Even though they are good at pointing out the general "fuckupiness" of normal politics, as they called it, there are still good places to get the news. I personally like the NY Times, PBS (especially Newshour), and NPR (most informative news service out there). BBC is pretty nice also. Cable news is a shithole.

I really didn't mean all my news from them... but they deal with the most relevant issues out there.
I agree with you about NPR and PBS....... I like that my tax money is funding them....

Stewart's interview with Richard Clarke (the whistleblower) the other day was fantastic. The man has evolved into a truly skilled interviewer.

It was, it amazes me how he can remain informative, funny, and fairly neutral all at once.

I can recall doubting him when he replaced Kilborn... my mistake.

I think it's the opposite, as much as I love the Daily Show, Jon refuses to conduct a meaningful interview because he constantly sabatoges it with stupid little quips and makes himself look stupid. When he talked about reading the book, he to a blow to himself when he said that he'd prefer it on tape - sure it gets him a quick laugh, but I'd rather hear him actually talk to Clark than try to cater to the lowest common denominator. He'll earn my complete respect when he quits the desperate jokes and actually interviews.

The thing that is really interesting with the Daily show is that when it started it really was just a fake news show. Nothing serious and just a bunch of goofs on idiocy in the news. I loved kilborn, but this show with jon stewart has taken a life of its own and gone in a more political direction, and I appreciate that.

Political humor is almost nonexistent nowadays, and the Daily show manages to do it extremely well 4 times a week for 22 minutes. The writing staff is truly top notch and really deserved the emmy they got.

As far as Stewart as an interviewer...he really isnt that great. He just sticks to the talking points (granted they have like 4 minutes to interview on the show). He does do the self deprecating bit a lot during the interview, and I also think he panders to the interviewee's humor WAAAAy too much. But he is still entertaining.

The bit the other night where Stewart imitated John Kerry quoting 50 Cent was hilarious!

And my current sig is from a BACK IN BLACK segment from a week or so ago.

Last night was good, but I actually wanted to mention the Monday episode. The Enron call back to grandma was hysterical. If you haven't seen it you should try and find it.

Those orphan kids can eat my ass!
yes those enron calls were evil on their own, but the call back to grandma millie was HILARIOUS.
I enjoy the show but find Stewart increasingly irritating. A couple people have mentioned his lousy interviewing skills. What I hate is he'll actually ask a really relevant question, then interrupt the answer with a lame joke & then move on to the next question without hearing the answer to the first question.

I still prefer Kilborn's version of the show.

That is very true. When the smaller-time political guests are on, I tend to just change the channel.

Some of the people he gets to interview are pretty boring people, lets face it they are. In my mind he tries to pull off what they do with the Canadian political shows when they where good, which is to inform and make you laugh. and he does that well.

Anyone that likes Kilborn to Stewart has to be some little girl that finds Kilborn cute because the man is a dick
post #16 of 976
You may come to realize that this show stands alone in it's political satire and will be remembered decades from now.

And seriously, if you haven't seen the Enron Grandma Millie bit, keep checking the website until they put it up. They will.

What was it, something about "you stupid old whore?" That was just classic.

I hardly ever watch the interviews, but I don't care about them. I watch The Daily Show for fake news, and that's what I gets. Once he gets to the interview portion, I'm done.

The interesting thing is that in Europe and im pretty sure most of the areas that carry CNN outside of the US, that the Daily Show is syndicated on it.

Thats right, outside the US, The Daily Show is shown on CNN.

Even more interesting is the fact that CNN outside of the US is actually rather reputable, unlike the crap we get here.

The show is pretty awesome and unique in its blending of politics and comedy (at least on mainstream TV)). But there are a few things that do irratate me about the show. The main being something that has to do with the interview section of the show.

After the first 8 or so minutes of Stewart really taking a satirical bite out of the political events of the day, and usually after one of the correspondent does a hilarious in-depth "report", we get to the interview. And Cameron Diaz comes out.

Now I agree that there should be politicians or people commenting on politics, being the nature of the show, but why bring on celebrities? I mean what the hell do they have to do with the show?

Admittedly, on both counts.
I don't know about Cameron Diaz - I have seen plenty of VERY political and fairly wonky people come out and sit on that couch. Not many New York Times columnists make it on Leno. If they have to throw a celeb out now and again to get ratings, so what?

I enjoyed the Kilborn version more because it felt looser...there was more variety from beginning to end. You never knew what to expect from night to night. That's how Kilborn's CBS show started, but it quickly went to the standard late night format.

Now, the best parts of "The Daily Show" show are over by 11:09.

Last night's episode with coverage of the G8 Summit and Ashcroft's time in front of Congress explaining the torture of Iraqi prisoners was one of the best I have watched.

Not to mention that Super Size Me star/director Morgan Spurlock was one of the more enjoyable interviews in a long while.

Funny ep.

"He was angry, yet he was smiling. How does one do that?"

"My brother told me, people eat that crap all their lives. Nine more days won't kill you!"

I agree. I think it's a great show for the first half, but rarely do I stick around for the interviews. I just don't find them as interesting.
I do have to admit, devinf, that the number of celebrity guests seems to be a lot less than they used to but when they do come on to do an interview that could easily be seen on Leno or Conan, I get slightly peeved and quickly change the channel.

But they have had a good roll for the past couple weeks, with some pretty interesting guests. So I guess I could let that little pet peeve slide...now when the hell are they going to make mayonaise jars easier to open?

Stewart officially became my hero tonight! He had Jennifer Love Hewitt on and just ripped into garfield. Called bill murray a money whore and poked fun at garfields decreasing popularity. Of course he did it in a nice way but still im glad someone finally said it instead of calling this film a delightful family romp.

I don't find them as interesting when he has the news media or politicos on, but I like it when he has actors, etc.

Did you see how he razzed Jennifer Love-Hewitt last night?

What was great, right at the end when he gives his final word it looked like he was going to apologize to Love, but nope, talked even more shit.

Stewart thoroughly kicked Stephen Hayes ass last night. Hayes handled himself well but he got killed and you could tell he knew it.
It's so fucking sad when the fake news guy demolishes you.
Yes that was pretty awesome. I really wanted him to rip into him, and for once he really did.
I got bored with his interview with Hayes, though I enjoyed his coverage of Clinton on 60 Minutes and the other stories.
The interview couldn't have been less boring.

That's crazy, one of Stewart's best interviews in a while, I could have watched him slam Hayes for hours.
That was a pretty good interview and Stewart really got him good. Espicially when he listed off those four things and then mentioned how you couldn't tell him what country it was. I can't remember the full details, but he got the guy good with that.

I was getting sleepy when I watched it. Perhaps I will watch the repeat at 7pm.
I love when Stewart got him on the WMD's in Iran.
A brilliant speech by Stewart. It's obvious the guy's fed up with playing neutral and he's basically playing fact against fiction. It was hilarious to see him out of his shell and just doing a full on verbal war with the guest. Incredible.

The whole episode was amazing. What's sad though is that the stuff about Dick Cheney should be in the real news. This is serious stuff and I'm stunned that it isn't circulating the presses right now. Oh well, at least someone is keeping tabs on the White House.

Here's an exact quote from Jon Stewart to his invited guest on The Daily Show 06/21/04, emphasis in Jon's:

"Who are you to talk about what's not been shown?"

It doesn't matter who the guest, what the topic, or whatever the circumstance... this is evil, pure and simple.
And considering his profession it's both hipocritical and incompetant. Watch on and be damned.

Calling a guy on his inane bullshitting is EVIL?

Proud to be damned!
I'm torn as to which is the better interview quote:

"Bill Murray must be some crazy whore for money."

or

"Who are you to talk about what's not been shown?"

Now that's a goddamn no-spin-zone.
Stewart certainly had fun with Ashley Judd last night and the discussion about Cole Porter.

And boy, he ripped into Regis Philbin too!

Michael Moore is the guest tomorrow. Should be interesting.

"Finding Memo" is easily one of the most scathing and hilarious indictment of the Bush administration.

It pinches the most when I drink flouridated tap water or think about the cellphone towers in playgrounds and church steeples. Seriously.

Simply put, I think all questions should be asked and all answers be heard. But some people ask questions and then try to get in way of the answers they don't want heard. One way to do this is to discredit the guest. If the guest can respond tje question is a way to gather more information. But when the question is posed in unanswerable, snarling rhetoric... the host is nothing but a liar trying to control your perception to his preference. It's evil and you should take it personally. I did and switched the channel. There's nothing for me worth watching on Comedy Central now except for Tough Crowd.

I want everything and give it to me straight.
Life is too short for anything else.

I feel this way about 90% of the news coverage I see. Stewart is 3000% fairer to the guests he disagrees with than the conservative newsmen (O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Hannity). And he isn't exactly Michael Moore. He just asks reasonable questions, and a lot of the time, he gets completely ridiculous answers from Bush-administration flunkies a lot of the time. I for one, and I think a lot of people, get fed up with the constant stream of bullshit. I am glad that Stewart is finally getting pissed off enough to call people on their bullshit, and not care if the O'Reilly's accuse him of being a flaming liberal communist terrorist-sympathizer.
