Jon Stewart.. and the Daily show - Page 13

Sign me up for the Hodgman lovefest. He's one of the freshest voices in comedy in a long time.

And Prankster's comments about Colbert's interviews are a perfect example of what I was talking about earlier. Yes, I understand that he's playing a character who constantly interrupts his guests. That doesn't change the fact that he actually is constantly interrupting his guests, and it's annoying. It falls into the category of doing too good a job of imitating his targets, and actually being them.
Well, unlike O'Reilly, Colbert can actually get a few laughs by doing what he does during his interviews. I agree that it can be annoying, though. Still, it's not like either show is really worth watching for the interview segment. I don't have much use for Stewart's interviews, especially the celebrity ones. I usually turn off both shows at the 20 minute mark, and always judge them by what came before.
It'd be interesting to see how he'd do on the Daily Show, but I'm happy with a David Simon interview from Colbert. I was getting a bit annoyed at how he never really got a chance to talk, but I figured that he's already said everything he wants to say about both shows, so why not just enjoy having a good laugh.
I watch neither of these shows for their interviews. The bits before are what's gold. I'm never a fan on the Daily Show when the guest gets two segments either. I start flipping immediately. If I want to watch interviews I'll cozy up to Charlie Rose.
Ok, last night's show was great.
The first segment with the "Going Rogue" movie trailer had me in stitches. All the Joe the Plumber talks and Tito the Builder. That was first rate.

The Obama interview was not that good, but that was expected. Specially being via satellite.
Loved Bob the Builder's response. Also, maybe it's just me, but I'm surprised at the gray in Obama's hair and how much is there, even from two years ago.
He looks better than most candidates who've been on the campaign trail long as he has, and still looks like he has energy to spare. Both Clintons looks like Holocaust survivors once they were off the trail.

As for the show, interview was just okay. But I couldn't help laughing my ass off at Obama fighting his white side to vote for himself.

I love that during the last week of the election, 'TDS' just says "Fuck It!" and doesn't even try to appear impartial.

More like the last year of the election.
Why should them? They are not a news program you know...
Well, it seems like what the Daily Show hates the most is blatant hypocrisy. They find the individual that is saying the most ridiculous things and makes fun of them.

Without question, the more uneven and inconsistent arguments have been made by the McCain side. You can argue that Obama is disingenuous with his remarks or that he doesn't have enough history to back up all his talk but at least he's stayed consistent through a campaign.
Newspapers endorse candidates on a regular basis, have done so for decades, and somehow miraculously remain capable of reporting news. This idea that news institutions must remain "impartial" at all costs is getting out of hand.
They love Obama because they're smart liberals. They were sucking him off when it looked like Clinton was going to win. Stewart often makes light of the serious content on TDS, but it's obviously the most important thing to him, and also, it's why the show is one of the great ones.
But in the interview yesterday with Bill Kristol, Stewart said he would have voted for 2000 McCain. You can't be that liberal if you're willing to say that you would have voted for McCain over Gore.
TDS doesn't have to be impartial but at least they called out bullshit on both sides of the race.

Granted, it has been easier to hammer McCain these past few months because he has been running around like a chicken with it's head cut off but it seems that now they focus almost exclusively on the Republican side. The Jon Oliver pieces where he shows just how idiotic many McCain/Palin supporters think seem to fall in that category.

Not that I'm complaining or anything. Kick 'em while they're down is what I always say.
I remember when John Stewart really liked McCain and McCain was on the show once a month it seemed. I think the reason the TDS is so hard on McCain as they really see him as a better person then what the campaign has shown.

Have they said which one between TDS and Colbert get the hour long on the election, or they both going to do them.
They'll be joining for a single one-hour special, I believe.
Seeing both of them "tear up" when they called it, made the night. The show was really bad though. They really can't do unscripted and live.

Also, yesterday "Sarah Palin is so dumb she thinks soy milk is spanish I am Milk"
The "juiced up" intros were gold, though.

And yeah, seeing both of them just barely hold composure after they called it made the night.

I disagree. I think Colbert and Stewart work so well together because Colbert is the improviser and Stewart has to play the straight-man. I thought it was pretty successful.

I can't believe there are those who think that with Bush out of office, The Daily Show will be out of material. As reminded by tonight's episode, as long as there's 24-hour news media, the Daily Show will have material.

Stewart has been not-so-subtlely driving the sarcasm knife into O-fanatics for several weeks. The show is going to be just fine, and given the new dynamics that there will be to explore in the country, I think the show may actually get better. It's time that for them to freshen up their approach and tone, and for Stewart to have some new targets. Stewart and South Park both recognize the fallacies of the different sides, and have never had any problem going for both.
For the last several years, the show has been as much about taking the news media to task as it has been about criticizing politicians. I don't see much chance that the news media is going to suddenly become unretarded, or that there will be a shortage of corruption in politics, even with a reasonable President.

Show was on fire last night, from "motherfuckers" and "Assholes" to the MSNBC bit to "Jon Stewart Touches Children." And just when I thought my crush on Anne Hathaway couldn't be any bigger.

Really? To me the whole bit was like it was written by a twelve year old cracking himself up over the use of curse words. I fell that in the past year or so the show as been relying more and more on curse words instead of real jokes.
It was great. Blatantly cursing terrorists on the air. Without any restriction. I loved it really.

Except for the bleeping. I don't get it, what's so awesome about them doing this? It's not like they were attacking the pope or kids with disabilities. It's not like they're gonna get in trouble over it.
You clearly love terrorists.
Stewart vs. Huffington was pretty sweet, interesting to hear that Stewart is somewhat anti-blog.
WHAT?!! I can't believe Riggle is leaving the show. I don't bust this out often, but
post #631 of 988
Yeah. Some people don't like him, but I really liked Riggle.
Wow, Stewart really tore into Cheney. I was genuinely surprised!

Also, as a quick side comment, that West Wing clip Colbert showed on his show was enough to remind me why I fuckin' love that show.
Could've sworn there were more recent posts in this thread...

Jon Stewart VS. CNBC and the Mad Money guy is awesome. Hopefully the NBC networks will continue to rise to the bait and drag it out for at least this week.
It's already in danger of dragging out a little too long; at least to be basically the entire focus of the all important first segment of the show. I love the point they're making, but if it goes on it'll run the risk of seeming like the show is manufacturing something to talk about.
The best of both of those segments was Stewart ending them both with "FUCK YOU!"

Being german and living in vienna, I obviously have very little exposition to American TV. I do regularly watch The Daily Show on their website, and I am somewhat disturbed to hear so many people claim Jon Stewart is one of the last few somewhat critical "news anchors" that arent blatantly in anyones pocket.... is it really that bad? I mean, hes great, and he does ask questions that need to be asked, and dont get asked.. but there must be far more on the bigger channels, I d hope.

Either way, through this segment I got to know about Jim Cramer and "Mad Money", and holy shit.... now I am scared. "Mad Money" is exactly the type of Idiocracy-style caters-to-morons-with-ADD show I thought only existed in Demolition-Man-style future movies. I cant watch that guy for more than 2 Minutes without wanting to throttle him, his kittens and burn the studio to be safe.
Dont tell me thats todays american TV now. And to think people invest their money based on the lunatic ravings of this maniac.... I am now less surprised by the consumer end of this economic crisis than I was before.

One thing I find funny about Jon Stewart is... he is a comedian. He is NOT a journalist, though sometimes doing a good job at being it.... but in the end, he is there to be fun. Whenever people he made fun of strike back, they try to do it from the "irresponsible journalist/bad news anchor" angle... which is exactly what he is hoping for, and which cannot work.
It is very difficult to successfully attack a funny, yet observant and usually quite correct court jester. It always has been. It may be a bit of a stretch, but guys like Stewart are exactly what a court jester used to be back then.... not just fun, but a way of saying things that otherwise could not be said.
Attacking him is just proving his point.

I just saw that Cramer is going to show up on the Daily Show himself. Now that is going to be interesting.

Worse, actually.
Cramer was on Colbert a few days ago. They didn't really mention the feud, though. But I'm never surprised when pundits show up on the Daily Show...they're all attention whores, so why would they back away from a ratings-grabbing fight? (Though I suppose there are a few, like Limbaugh, who absolutely cannot put up a real defense in situations like that.)

It's the politicians and people with actual power who aren't going to show up there, and are to be slightly commended when they do.
By the way, it was a week or two ago now, but Jason Jones' Usual Suspects riff with the crazy preachers who were labeling Obama as the next Hitler/Antichrist was brilliant.
Woah, I didn't know the feud with cnbc stuff went on for more than the first time last week. I need to catch up on some episodes.
This is one awkward interview.
Goddamn. Jon was like a surgeon. New asshole = torn.
Does Cramer always sound like he's on the verge of tears? Or was it just tonight.

It was just tonight. Holy shit.
Is it too soon to make Chris Brown/Rihanna jokes? Because that was a savage beating. Holy shit.
That might have been the first time that Cramer has been rendered speechless in front of a television camera.
That was beautiful. I almost wish Cramer hadn't been as much of a hapless douche so it would have been more satisfying to watch him get carved.

Now Stewart just needs to have about 8,000 more interviews with all the other bastards who facilitated this.
I've now watched this for a third time.

I still feel odd heaping praise on Jon Stewart, but fuck. The guy's so on the ball that he makes Williams, Gibson and Couric look like the three fuckin' stooges that they are.
Remember when Stewart used to go easy on people? I think Cramer was hoping for that guy.
"People in hotels are wondering why it's on the front page of their free newspaper" is a great detail.

Third clip on the Daily Show website after he plays the Verizon clip and he says "It's not a fucking game" was wonderful. Stewart is so good at alternating between being nice and hard questions, each switch heightening the tension. He needs to do this more, this was like a perfect storm of polite victim and righteous Stewart. Bernard Goldberg, Crossfire guys, O'Reilly... I can't think of others that were in person (Huckabee, not really), but since we have so few mainstream journalists who are openly critical of establishment figures and he functions as a de facto one every once in awhile... it makes me want him to leave behind his early, funny stuff, like Woody Allen. I used to watch it constantly, it got me through half of the Bush administration, but I've stopped because I can predict the jokes.
