Anyone celebrating Passover tomorrow?

My mothers side of the family is Jewish so I'm going to my uncle's house for the seder. I never bring anything, so this year I thought I'd make a dessert. I found this really great recipe called "Caramel Matzoh Crunch" that 's really easy to make. Anyway, as I won't be posting much tomorrow I thought I'd wish everyone a happy Passover.

I'm not Jewish but I want in on that Matzoh.

This is the first year I won't be home for my Mom's sedar, so she's naturally a little sad about it. We were never that great about going to services, but Passover was one of the two holidays we actually went to temple for every year (the other being Rosh Hashana). I can't see myself doing much to mark the occassion, especially in lieu of my agnosticism (haven't told my mom about that one yet). However, Happy Passover to any of the Jewish chewers out there that are actually celebrating the holiday!

It's funny, I have a film ethics class tomorrow night taught by our dean and everyone is trying to figure out if he's Jewish or not because nobody wants to have class.

Not a Jew like Rod Carew but will watch the O.C. episode "The Nana" again which centers around Passover. Watching the episode you can learn how to pronounce the letter H the Jewish way as well as some nifty Jewish slang. If you pay careful enough attention to the episode you will be able to out Jew your Jewish friends.

in tune with the ways of my family, i'll be having Passover dinner on Tuesday, i'll be making and providing the latkes, if i don't eat all of them first before i get there, little round seductresses of potato and onion! one for them, one for me, one for them, two for me...

Celebrating (sitting in?) with my mother-in-laws new husband and his family. A catholic/baptist/jewish/episcopalian shindig!

Man, I forgot about the Latkes. LOVE those things. My cousins and I would fight for them tooth and nail every year. For some reason my mom and aunt never caught on to just make more of them for everyone. Maybe they got a kick out of watching us swipe at each other with our forks.

I haven't been to Seder in like ten years, getting all those family members together in one room is just something I never want to be part of. Allthough, I do kinda remember liking the food.

Considering that the rest of the food at a seder sucks, you darn well better get enough latkes.

Matzo ball soup is pretty good too.

POTATO LATKES...

6-8 Potatoes
1 medium sized Onion
1 large Egg
1 Tsp Kosher Salt
1 Tbsp Flour

Peel and cube potatoes. Fill blender almost to the top and fill three quarters the way up with water. Puree. Strain in a sieve. Try to remove as much water as you can. Set aside in a large bowl.

Puree 1 onion and 1 egg. Add to mixture. Add 1 Tablespoon heaping of flour. Mix with a large spoon.

Use a medium sized ladel and fry on medium with oil (crisco, light olive oil, wesson). Cook until golden brown.

For multiple batches, keep the same ratios. For every three batches you can add an extra 1/2 onion and an extra egg. Some recipes call for matzoh meal instead of flour. Dill and schmaltz have also been known to be added. One batch should yield ~15 small pancakes. I find it better to make at least 4 batches at a time. Two for me and two for the rest of the family. These won't rise like buttermilks, but they'll fucking taste like gold...

I was always partial to the charoseth, too. I have an affinity for apple-type things, so naturally I liked it. And I don't know about anyone else, but our family always makes brisket and it kicks ass.

The matzah ball soup goes without saying.

My family makes brisket too and it indeed kicks ass!

Scott, my family makes too much food, so we end up eating leftovers for days afterward. When I was younger I thought it sucked. But now that I live on my own and don't cook for myself, you better believe I'm taking a doggie bag with me.

It's funny, aside from the yearly latke drought, my mom always seems to make the PERFECT amount of food. We all ate well, but almost never had leftovers. Even when we did it was just enough brisket to get demolished for lunch the next day.

Though I think my aunt on my dad's side more than makes up for it every Thanksgiving. Good lord.
