I need your prayers!

I just learned my grandfather has prostate cancer. They say it hasn't spread and that with radiation treatments he should fully recover. As I don't trust doctors, those words aren't that comforting. He will get radiation treatments 5 days a week (excluding weekends) for 5 weeks starting April 19.

My grandparents practically raised me and my brother as my mom was quite incapable of doing it herself. My grandmother died a few years ago which was hard, but at the same time was not unexpected. This news seemed to come out of the blue.

I know he'll be fine, but you all always seem to make a bad situation not seem so bad.

Many prayers for your Grandfather, as well as for yourself, Diva. I completely feel for you. My father was treated for prostate cancer about a year ago, and while the treatments can be uncomfortable, a full recovery IS possible. The biggest complaint my Dad had was loosing his hair. (Vanity, it seems is still alive and well, even at 82)

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Diva, I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. I know I am not alone when I say that I'm here if you need me. *Hugs*

Diva, consider it done.

I'll also light a candle for him at The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes when I visit Notre Dame later this month.

My wife went through radiation a few years back. It was a pretty shitty experience. She had her upper chest radiated, and it caused problems with food tasting funny and breathing.

However, it's a pretty effective treatment despite the side effects. I know it's really scary when you're preparing to go through something like this. Cancer is terrifying. But he's probably going to be fine, and this will give him a whole new outlook on life once he gets through it. In my experience, cancer survirors are some of the happiest people you'll ever meet.

Good luck to you and your grandfather.

I'm sending positive thoughts and vibes to
your grandfather and you!

best wishes Diva, hope it all works out, lack of metastasizing is a great thing, the doctors saying "fully recover" is good since they rarely say anything positive in these matters, hope is not one of their strong points, and if you're any indication of what kind of person your grandfather is, i'm sure that he's a fighter and that everything will be okay, hopefully you're at MSKCC, 'cause some place like Beth Israel is liable to remove the wrong kidney...

Good luck to your grandpa, Diva. Good news is that it's a form of the disease that IS beatable. The odds are good, he'll be alright!

An old man with prostate cancer. Shocking.

Maybe not too surprising, but sit in room as a doctor tells someone they have cancer, and shock will inveriably be used to describe the reaction to the news (age matters not).

Oh, and sympathic much?

Being a man, yeah, I'm sympathetic. I know three old dudes who got the same diagnosis in the last year.

I did a stint as a student nurse on a urological ward - most of the guys we treated had this, and as a rule (and this is more of a guideline), it was the easiest of the cancers to beat and prognosis was generally quite good. And that was at least 15 years ago - so doubtless technology has advanced quite a bit since then.

But I'll think of him next time I'm in a church.

I know this is a beatable cancer, but it still sucks. But I fall under the "you never know what could happen" camp. I used to work at a patient safety activist and you'd be surprised how many people die from seemingly innocent operations. Of course, the majority of the time it was due to doctors' malpractice, but again "you never know."

I'm fairly certain you realize this, but still:

I wasn't saying "it's beatable" as in "Oh, stop worrying already!" I was saying it to kind of ease your mind and give some hope.
