So I finally watched Cabin Fever

Sight unseen, I bought the DVD along with Wrong Turn. Well, at least I was lucky in judgement with one of those movies. Cabin Fever is rank with awesomeness on so many levels! The deaths are creepy, the homages are blatant, and I don't think I can ever watch a person shave their legs, AGAIN!

PANCAKES!

billylove - that kid could be the next Lorenzo Lamas!

MightyBikkit - I haven't tried it yet, but I'll give it a spin later tonight.

Malachi Constant - It's definately worth a buy! I picked it up at Blockbuster during their 'buy one, get the second ½ off' promotion. Hence, Wrong Turn. I pick up homages to Night Of The Living Dead (The end scene with the blonde guy), Evil Dead (The dog vision), and The Curse (Don't drink the water!). I'm sure theres more, but I've only seen the movie once.

Like some here feel about the TCM remake, I never really liked this movie. Maybe I bought into the hype too much, but I was left underwhelmed by this movie. IMO, the movie seems to think it is funnier and scarier than it actually is. At my most generous I would give it about a 5.5/10
post #6 of 50
I came away from the first viewing very disappointed. It had been hyped so much as "terrifying" or "the goriest movie in years" blah blah blah. But the other weekend I got it on pay-per-view and wiped my mind of all prior expectations and I gotta admit I liked it. That shaving the legs scene was pretty gross.
I was sorely dissapointed. Ill timed, unfunny humour just killed any of the promising parts for me......decisivly average imho.
One of the funniest films in recent memory. Classic.

Exactly. This movie is hysterical.

The special features on this DVD made the purchase for me. Watch the documentary on the making of Cabin Fever; it's so awesome! Eli Roth has to be one of the funniest directors I've heard interviewed in a LONG time.
Come on, now...ease up. Wrong Turn isn't a bad film at all, really. Sure, it's derivative (though no more so than Cabin Fever), but over all it's well-acted, nicely shot and tightly directed. And it features a damned fine onscreen beheading.

I don't really get how people can praise Cabin Fever for its homages while damning Wrong Turn for the very same thing.
I thought Wrong Turn was okay, nothing really earthshattering for sure, but a good fun flick. I also say the 1/2 beheading was memorable. Cabin Fever on the other hand is beyond contempt.

It was better than the actual movie!

I felt just the opposite.
Eli Roth completely ruined the movie for me, and I found him smug and annoying.

I'm not a huge fan of the movie, it is standard fare in my opinion, but it does have some great funny dialogue and some good scenes.

Unfortunately in my opinion, there was too much going on in the movie that detracts from the whole picture.

The beer party that Rider Strong stumbles upon, the whole redneck chase angle, The party crazy detective, and Rider Strong's sudden kill/violence frenzy...

and the happy bald guy bowling story just was pointless.

(and I know I'm going to come under fire from all of you for faulting the movie, especially this scene...)

I just thought that there was just too much crammed into this movie, and Roth tried waaay too hard to be hip and cool.

I really hope we never hear from this guy again, but if we do, his next movie won't be such a "I'm so cool and such a horror fan" type movie.

I agree.

And if he does make another "horror" movie, make sure it's got some scares in it. Cabin Fever didn't have any.

Since you're all dying to hear what I thought, this is what I posted in a previous thread:
Just rented this sucker, so I figured this was a good place to weigh in.
Close but no cigar. It tried too hard to be a campy cult movie, but fell short. The script just wasn't smart enough, the performances too bland, the direction was off by a tad.
And it just didn't have enough gore. To much time devoted to calculated wacky shit like the party cop and the hillbillies, not enough carnage. I mean, that's what I'm there for. Everything else is just window dressing.
The Evil Dead movies work because there is an obvious sincerity at work there. Raimi doesn't seem like he's out to impress anyone but himself and his goofball friends. Cabin Fever tries to pander to us, but there's not enough talent or true clarity of vision to pull it off.
And again, not enough gore. Come on, man. In a movie like this you gotta pour it on by the bucketfull! This didn't kick into high gear until the end. By then, it was too little too late.

I'd also like to add that "Wrong Turn" was indeed better. Sure it was derivitive schlock, but, unlike CF, it delivered what it promised. Good B-flick horror fun.

Yikes!

Wrong Turn is better!? The fuck!?
Jeezus, I haven't seen Cabin Fever yet, but if that P.O.S. is better, then maybe I should avoid it all together!

If the movie had more of that and less "wacky cop" it would have been soooo much better.

isnt it kinda hard to write "scares" into a movie about a disease? what is there gonna be like germs chasing around people in the woods? the horror in cabin fever comes from the unpleasantness in something like that happening to you. it would be scary if it happened to you, if you watch someone else go through, its just an unpleasant feeling. Not all horror is about scares. good horror movies can repulse too.
oh and about the wacky cop, its obvious Eli Roth is a Last House On the Left fan, and that movie had the worst wacky cops in cinema history. definately a homage.
The whole fuckin' movie was a homage to everything Eli seems to like in horror movies. Too bad he spent too much time on winking references and not enough time on crafting his own film.
Cabin Fever fucking blows and I hope Eli Roth gets testicle cancer for making it.
I liked both "Wrong Turn" & "Cabin Fever" but neither blew me away. I think I liked WT more because it didn't try to be funny and stuck to the horror. Like I said neither of them did anything we hadn't seen 100 times before but both were well made and fun. They are both worth a look. -Clark

Yeah, I gotta agree and say I don't care for Eli Roth. He just seems like a smug bastard who thinks he is the next Horror God or something. He certainly know his horror, but he just seems like a total fuckface in every interview I have seen or read.

No more funny horror movies please.

I've always thought horror movies should give you a "scared the shit out of me" feeling.

If I wanted to watch a film and get an "unpleasant feeling", I'd just eat some bad Mexican food that's been sitting in the fridge for a month.

In fact, that's how the should promote it.

Cabin Fever: It won't scare the shit out of you, but it'll give you an unpleasant feeling.

That should work well.

Cabin Fever is one of the best horror films of the last several years as far as I'm concerned. I loved everything about it! Deputy Winston was a riot, and added to the bizarre mood of the film. I'm glad he was in there. Fantastic film!

I have to agree with you. Cabin Fever was entertaining, but not a bit scary. Wrong Turn freaked me out a bit, inbred hillibillies are pretty damn scary IMO. Neither are going to be classics by any stretch of the imagination but not a bad way to kill a couple of hours either.
For my time and money I would watch Wrong Turn every day of the week and twice on Sunday before watching Cabin Fever again. Of course I am being sarcastic, but I feel Cabin Fever was one of the bigger letdowns in recent memory. At least it was for me.
There were plenty of moments during my viewing of Cabin Fever that made me quite happy(as far as modern horror movies are concerned), but I like many, was ultimately left unfulfilled for numerous reasons. One reason being the choice to hold back on certain scenes that had the potential for true gore, and the ones that were gory were simply crap.

I think the main problem was the director. The director was far too overzealous w/ his approach, leaving the screenplay feeling like a comic book from Troma. What type of audience were the producers and editors searching for?Was the film supposed to be a b-horror movie,or an amibitious, albeit quirky and slightly humorous horror FILM?

and the whole Pancakes character was just plain retarded and made think the director was a college freshman
post #36 of 50
How did Eli Roth get admitted into that horror directors club thingy...dont know the name....but I think someone on here will know what the hell im trying to convey through my cloudy description

ooooh, it's just so funny !!! ... It's almost as if I were watching an episode of "Friends" ... It's so nice to see horror films that aren't scary ... Just funny ... That's just great ... I would much rather watch Wrong Turn. That's a movie I loved. Straight up horror movie. In my humble opinion, if you want a laugh, go watch a comedy. Thats what they are for. I am not against the odd joke in a horror film or one liner, but CF was a horrible misshapen blending of genres, with a director who obviously wanted little more than attention, to be "down" with horror fans.

He seemed really smug on several programmes I saw him on.
I once recall he was pissed at Eliza Dushku because she wouldn't get her tits out in Cabin Fever. Yeah, how awful, she has standards and doesn't want to get naked to fufill your wet fan boy dream, Eli.

I have seen so much crap that's just gore and tits and nothing else. I know people dig that type of stuff, even understand it, but that kind of thing does nothing for me. Give me plot and character any day.
:I once recall he was pissed at Eliza Dushku because she wouldn't get her tits out in Cabin Fever.

I'm assuming you mean Jordan Ladd, right?
No, no. He means Eliza Dushku. He was sitting next to her in the theater, watching Cabin Fever. And he's all like, "Eliza, take your top off. Let's see the jugs." And she's all like, "Ew, no. Get away." And he's all like, "Stuck-up skank. You ain't all that. Fuck, but this cancer makes my balls itch!"
The sad thing is that you're probably not too far from the truth.

And anyway, I agree. Roth is a smug prick with no idea how to direct scenes possessed of any actual tension.

What you mean like Big Trouble in Little China? That movie is loved around here ( I love it too) so it's hard to bash a "horror" movie that is funny but not scary. I love both films because of how hilarious and outlandish they are.

If you went into this expecting to see a truly scary and disturbing horror film then you'll obviously be disappointed. If, however, you watch this for the black humor and insanely placed scenes then you'll love this movie.

Do I think Eli Roth is the savior of modern horror? Nope. Do I think he's a smug son of a bitch? I don't know, I've never met him - have you? You can't judge someone by what you saw on the bonus features of a DVD.

Oh, and The Rotten Fruit is the shit.

Unfortunately I did meet him at the last Weekend of Horrors.
And all the things people have said about him in this thread have been very...um, generous.

He's much worse.
Well then you certainly have more room to speak of his personality than most of the others. If you've actually met the guy then I cant see where you're coming from.

I wonder if this could be like the whole Tom Savini fiasco - I had a lot of people tell me how much of an asshole he was, but when I met him IRL he was a truly great guy.

Maybe you just have to meet people on certain days - or maybe they're just douche bags

Guy, exactly the opposite can be said from your argument. You are saying you cannot judge a person for being funny based on DVD features, but by your statements it seems enough to hate him, which seems like judgement to me. What I think you meant to say was "I don't like him, so you can't."

I'm a sarcastic ass-hole, who can shoot the shit with other sarcastic ass-holes -- Eli and I are brothers from another mother. I LIKE the guy.

The Rotten Fruit = Solid Gold.
