My doggie was put to sleep :(

Today my mom had to put to sleep my childhood doggie, Ralph. He was 16 years old, and he'd had aging problems for the past few years, but this weekend he just took a turn for the worst and clearly wasn't comfortable anymore (he refused pizza crust for the first time ever).

So they took him to the vet today and buried him in the back yard later. Very sad day, but for the best.

Feels a little strange losing a pet you've had since you were four years old. I wish I had a picture to show you guys (he was a mixed terrier with blondish fur).

RIP Ralph: 1988-2004

Very sorry to hear that Werbal. I'm not looking forward to when my cats get older. Good thoughts flowing your way.

I'm sorry for your loss, it's tough to lose someone so close to you.

I know how you feel Kint, I cried my eyes out when I had to put my cat to sleep several years back, and you'll get along soon enough.

A year ago, we had to put our dog down, so I kinda know what you're going through. She was dying from cancer, and I didn't want to be in the room when they did it. Now, I wish I was in the room, but too late now. Sorry werby

Hey, thanks for the kind words everyone. I feel better (went out and got a root beer float with my friend) and it just feels really bizarre cause I never really thought about it before, but I knew him almost my entire life (I was 4 when we got him).

Hell, I've known him longer than all of my friends. I'll be okay though. I can recognize that it was his time to go to doggie heaven, to spend out his afterlife with Dom DeLuise.

Ummm....Dom DeLuise is not dead.

At least he'd get his dog back then...

Werbal, I am very sorry to hear this news. The loss of a favorite or family pet is just as hard as losing a close friend. I hope you feel better soon.

I'm very sorry Werbal.

My pets are my babies, so I know how you must feel.

I'm sorry for your loss.

It is always horrible when one loses a pet.

My grandparents lost their dog recently and it almost killed them. I called them and tried to console them. My grandmother cried a little while I talked to her. When I spoke to my grandfather, his voice started to break up. That was one of the scariest moments in recent memory.

I also have a dog as well as two cats back home. If I lost my dog, I don't know what I would do.

My condolences.

Horrible to lose pets. I know it's natural, but it's horrible.

I lost a dog a couple of years ago who was like a close friend. I adored her and she adored me, and I still miss her.

Carl,

Really liked that website. Reading the story Rainbow Bridge brought a tear to my eye.

Printed from the website Carl provided:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Sorry to hear that. Best wishes to you and everybody else who Ralph was important to.

Losing a pet can be rough, especially one that's been around as long as that. We lost our cat in Oct 2002 and she had been around for 21 years. My sister was barely older than her and she died a week before my sisters birthday. Then in April of 2003 my dog died. Just over six months apart and I lost 2 pets.

Gosh, I was a mess.

Really sorry to hear about Ralph...

I lost my kitty, Sophie, a few weeks ago. She was 18, and it was one of the hardest things I have ever had to deal with. Pets are just like children to some, and it is a great loss.

Werb, sorry about Ralph. I hope he is happy in animal Heaven playing with my little Sophie girl!

I feel your pain. My childhood dog Chelsea (a springer spaniel) had to be put down 2 years ago, as she too was born in 1988. We had her cremated and have her ashes in a nice little bone shaped urn on our mantle.

It's an awful feeling because if you have a dog that long and you have a fucking soul, it's heart-wrenching...you're truly losing a family member.

My deepest consolations, for what it's worth.

I feel your pain Werbal. My sister's dog had to be put to sleep a few years ago. It was one of the saddest days of my life. My dad is a vet and I know it's always hard for them when there's nothing else that can be done.

How very sad. We had to put our dog down two years ago and I still miss her like crazy.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss Werbal. I lost my doggie last week. He was a 9 1/2 year old Pug named Taz.

He was my baby and I sorely miss him

21 years is an amazing amount of time with a pet. What breed was your kitty?

Never like to hear stuff like this, but at least Ralph was adored by his family.

My grandmother had her poodle, Joey, for 18 years before she finally had to put him down due to cancer of the prostate.

She was devestated.

To put in perspective, this dog was with her longer than the length of her first and second marriages combined and was older than the last five grandchildren.

She mourned her pal Joey more than when her own daughter died a few years later.

My dog SHAY is 12 right now. She's in good health, but she's showing signs of old age with bad eyesight and creaky joints.

And her farts are worse than ever----gag a maggot.

Werbal,

Sorry to hear about your dog, man. At least Ralph is at peace now, though you and your family aren't.
