How Many Horror Film Festivals Are There?

I'm finding it really fucking hard to find Horror Film Festivals around America, let alone around the world. Sure, sometimes there's a press release after the movies have been chosen about half a month before the festival screens, but no advance call for entries. Sure, we got the MooDudes, who are running a kick ass fest in New York, we got Screamfest in LA that tries hard but doesn't get the same kind of attendance (and this year was spread out amongst too many theaters for me), we got Fantasia, But what about the rest?

Anyone have a comprehensive list of Horror Film Fesitvals? I'm kind of surprised one of the horror sites like this one, or even Rue Morgue or Fango, haven't given this a shot. Film Festivals are one of the best ways to generate a movement behind cool movies that otherwise might sit in their graves, and we all know (maybe you didn't) that regular film festivals shit on horror movies. Don't pretend, Horror movies are the retarded red headed step child of the movie industry one step above porno in the minds of something like Cannes or the rest of their ilk.

So, any feedback?

Here are a few you didn't mention:

Saints & Sinners (St. Petersburg, FL)
Rhode Island International Horror Film Festival
Chicago Horrorfest Film Festival
aka Shriekfest (LA)
Exofest (Detroit/Canada - not sure if they're still doing it)
Creepfest (LA)
Fright Fest (Gainesville, GA - not to be confused with Gainesville, FL)
Dead by Dawn (Edinburgh, Scotland)
Substream Film Festival (Gainesville, FL)
Hollywood Scarefest (LA)

Sorry, you'll have to Google these; didn't have time to provide links.

Both Creature Corner and Fango are currently develping short horror film compilation DVD's; CC's is called "The Nightmare Collection" and Fango's is "Blood Drive". You may want to check out those projects.

Good luck, HDF.

Thanks Andy, there's also a Chicago horror fest that had posted the wrong address on their entry forms, so I was pretty pissed when the fedex I sent them got bounced back to me. But I know there's even more out there than this. My partner Joe keeps tripping across them after they've already closed their submissions out.

I've been following the Nightmare Collection for awhile and I know their comics artist, Noeland. I don't know where they are in their project or what their release date is. We're going to the duplicator and printer around May 10th. We've got a great package for Flowers on the Razorwire and we've gotten enough orders in the comics market place to just about break even on our costs.

I'm not as enthusiastic about the Blood Drive because they want all of their shorts to be so damn short and they don't them to have any fucking music in them. No tunes just rips the soul out of your project. I'm a big believer in sound.

I'd seen Creepfest advertised, don't know anyone that's been to one though.

Thanks for your help.

Nightmare Collection is actually done more or less. Rick's sent out screener tapes to various distributors who said they were interested, and we're just in a holding pattern now. If this one takes off, a second one will be prepped very quickly, especially if it can get distro.

I know Noeland too. He's part of the booming Tampa Bay horror film community. Incidentally, I did the cover art & DVD label for "The Nightmare Collection", so between Creature Corner, Noeland, Rick Danford and myself it's been a team effort.

Didn't know that Fango's "Blood Drive" doesn't want music in their films. I know they wanted short run times; I believe the limit was 13 minutes, which disqualified my movie. Oh, well; them's the rules.

Yes, I'm sure there are more Horror film festivals than the ones I listed - if you find some more, please post them. I entered "Creepfest" a few years back, and they posted a little description about my movie, but I don't think it played at the festival.

Thanks for TNC update, Johnny.

Columbus, Ohio has an annual 24 hour horror marathon in October. Past guests of honor have included Stuart Gordon, George Romero, and Bruce Campbell. It is currently held at a venue called Studio 35.

What's the 24hour marathon called? If it's got a name, it's easier to track down.

I say the cover art for the Nightmare Collection, looked good. Did Noeland tell you I was gonna be on of the actors in his Somewhere in Pittsburgh flick? Too bad that one had the wheels fly off. I was flown out to read for that science fiction flick Noeland was involved in briefly also.

If you know anyone else out there with a cool short, pass on my contact info. Me and Joe are looking for our next installments on Flowers. Some of my friends in distribution tell me Anthology Horror flicks are a hard sell, but obviously people like making them. Definitely keep me up to what's happening with Nightmare.

If I find out any more about the horror cons I'll pass it on. This is the link for that chicago horror festival. They got their address right on the site now and I think they're doing something for Halloween.

The Marathon is currently called NIGHTMARE AT STUDIO 35.

Then if you want info on the upcoming ones go to the homepage for updates as they occur.

An update to anyone interested... I've expanded my earlier film fest list into the Horror Fests & Cons Database. Check it out at http://maddogmovies.com/blog/horror.php

Feedback is welcome! I'm looking for any info on new or old genre events, so let me know. I'd also like to list more foreign festivals, but too few of them have english versions of their sites.

Another Horror Festival

Don't forget to add the Halloween Horror Picture Show to your list.
