Rules of Attraction

Watched this again last night and all I can say is I think this film is underrated. James Van Derbeek is just great in his role(and is very much like a guyI am friends with. He is ONLY interested in hitting it and going and is always just hammered when laid), and I it is the ONLY time I have not hated Kip Pardue. Love that whole Europe trip montage. Jessica Biel lights the screen on fire as always, and the film is funny and tragic at the same time. A great look at the dark side of college and life. Thoughts?

WTF? Has nobody seen this movie? I thought at least Bateman would have chimed in by now.

I’m not the biggest fan of Roger Avary but I think Rules Of Attraction is damn well made.

I believe James Van Derbeek’s role as Bateman as is up there with Brad Pitt’s Tyler Durden in terms of totally acid bathing away your preconceptions of an actor who you previously thought was adverse to roles containing grit.

Any scene with Richard (it's Dick!) is classic.

There are a few moments where I think the film loses itself in its own “cleverness” but its still a fantastic flick.

Plus, living in Australia we were able to see the 45 second extended version on the bigscreen.

Hoo-rah for 45 seconds!

I love this movie, it really does remind me of college, and I don't understand the people that disagree with me.

What's the extra 45 seconds?

Love the movie, but hate the scene where the girl kills herself. Creepy.

Hmmm...I may have to check this one out again....It's been awhile....

I never listen to Faith by George Michaels, unless I'm dancing on a hotel bed in my white briefs.

Fuckin' loved Dick! "Fuck you! And fuck you! And fuck yooou, pretty boy!"

I love this film. I think it's probably the only movie to actually portray college the way it is. It's so true, and that's really sad.

My question, what was everyone's take on the ending? People seem to have lots of different takes on it.

That was cinematic magic. "Drunk! I am drunk!"

I had high expectations for the film and REALLY disliked it on first viewing; since, it's been on one of my pay channels and I've done a 180 on my assessment - the "backwards" filming is a bit overdone; once in the beginning would have been fine, but Avary uses it too often to the detriment of the film.

Originally, I felt it suffered because there were no characters you could identify with - they're all callow, shallow, obnoxiously self-involved asswipes. But then, that's the point - I view RoA as possibly the blackest, bleakest college comedy ever filmed.

At first viewing, this was the one scene that I found to be thoroughly brilliant. It hit me so hard that I can't even rewatch it. Anyone know what the song playing during this scene is, BTW?

I loved it. Never got to see it in theaters sadly but bought the Australian DVD with the extra 45 seconds. I can't say what was added because I've never seen the R rated cut but from what I've heard it is mostly just snippets from the European trip montage that had too much nudity for the MPAA to deal with. Can you see Kip Pardue's schlong in the US version? It's on display in the Australian/unrated version.
I'm a fan of Bret Easton Ellis' books but I didn't get around to the novel of Rules of Attraction until after I had seen the film. It was really great to read the novel and to realize that Avery had taken certain dialogues word for word from the novel. Really one of the best and most satisfying book-to-screen adaptations I've ever seen and I hope Avery gets his version of Glamourama off the ground eventually.

I just saw this for the first time a few months ago. Dick was definitely my favorite part of the whole film. Everything he did was ten times more entertaining than whatever was happening around him. It was also terrific to have a character in the film that was enthusiastic about something, even if it was just being weird and drunken. Van Der Beek was excellent, too; I hope he gets more serious roles in the future.
It was a better film than I thought it would be. The editing seemed a little gimmicky; I didn't see what was wrong with the story that they needed to skip around in time like that. But it was a pretty interesting film, and pretty dark. I can't say that it reminded me of my college experience, but everyone sees life through their own lens. Mine was just closer then to Hideaki Anno than Roger Avary.

IIRC, the song playing during the suicide bit is "Without You" by Harry Nilsson.

Love this movie. Pretty accurate take of the book, if leaving some scenes out.

Avary did a great job of taking a book that is all over the place and making sense of it, while still keeping that sense of chaos.
A great, great movie.

Will there ever be a special edition DVD made of this movie? I know it was discussed after the current DVD was released, but I have not heard anything since.
