While I have always had a soft spot in my heart for ZOMBIE , my love for Fulci never really went any further ... At best, THE BEYOND and GATES OF HELL came off as moderately inspired, but in reality, they were thrown together and poorly excexcted . . . and he really went downhill with NEW YORK RIPPER . . .
Having only seen HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY years ago on the old 5th generation VHS ( with Japanese subtitles, of course ), I watched the Anchor Bay DVD last night . . .
And I really liked it . . . Granted, there were some things in the film that could have been better . . . But with HOUSE, Fulci appeared to hit his stride as far as combining a creepy story with much of the surreal oddness of his eariler horror films ...The unexplained weirdness that had been so hit-and-miss in the past worked great, and the gore was awesome ....... In particular, I thought that the scene in which Bob ( the son ) and May ( the redhaired girl ) had their conversation ( 100 yards apart ) was really cool ...
Just a tangent - the little girl's name was May . . . she was an oddball, and she carried around a doll that looked strikingly like the doll in last year's film MAY ... Lucky's tribute to Fulci perhaps ???
Anyways ...
The one thing I didn't really like was Freudstein's makeup ... WTF ??? ... He looked more like a mole that the living dead . . .
Overall, a really good film, great music, great gore ( esp in the scene with the realtor ) and an out-of-hand finale ...
.... Mommy, mommy, there's someone down here
Now I need to go back and see DON'T TORTURE A DUCKLING and LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN , two films that I have been lukewarm on seeing ...
Any thoughts on HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY, and how it stacks up against his other work ????
