Boxing - Page 5

Wow, that was unexpected and expected at the same time. I expected Leija to beat Bojado since Bojado didn't have enough heart his last few fights. Bojado has the skills, the punch, the moves, just not the heart of a fighter. Guess you just can't train that. Jesse James Leija deserved that win and hopefully he gets another good payday out of it, he earned it. I think JJL could of actually KO'd Bojado if he continued to go to the body, did you see around round 5 when he nailed him with a good clean body hook that had Panchito buckling over, after that shot Bojado covered his body up and stayed squat the rest of the fight. Bojado wanted nothing more of those body shots and if Leija took it to him there again he mighta ended it. My wife thought it looked like Bojado broke a rib, and I can't argue with that assessment at all.

Gatti/Dorin turned out how I expected, but not how I wanted it. I thought Gatti would be too big for Dorin and I was right. I wanted it to be a 12rd war and it ended so abruptly right as it was getting good. That body shot was wicked and would of taken ANYBODY out. It's just after so many wars you almost get letdown by Gatti getting the early KO. I wouldn't call it an easy KO, and I could see a rematch going a much different way.

Hey that's boxing..

I was out of town all last week, Sat-Sat and stayed at a place without HBO. Missed both fights and am pissed. Thanks for the good updates Xtian.

Another good Tuesday Night Fights w/ Edner Cherry laying the leather on Antonio Ramirez. Cherry got hammered in the second and was in la-la land and holding on for dear life before scoring a flash-off-balance-pretty-much-a-slip KD in the 3rd. In the 4th Cherry landed a huge counter that Cherry thought was sending Ramirez to the canvas, but somehow he stayed up and survived the round only to be killed by a nice left hook that sent him down early in the 5th. Ramirez got up only to take a couple more heavy shots before a strange turn of events took place, the ref stepped in seemingly to give a standing 8 (which w/ the unified rules there is no standing 8) only to pull Ramirez to the corner to be looked at by the doctor before calling the fight, probably a little early, but Ramirez was pretty much done for and would of wound up getting hurt, but we were robbed of a big time KO.

Great action fight though, and I look forward to more of Edner Cherry in the future.

The undercard was... okay.. until that vicious KO in the 10th by Prince Abadi Ajamu.

So are any of you guys actually going to throw down money for the fight tomorrow night? I don't think I am.
The Tyson fight? nope. The HBO PPV. nope, that fucker should be on regular HBO, bullshit suck the money out of the latino PPV card. Shit like that hurts boxing, because noone outside of latino and a few hardcore boxing fans will see the Morales card, and that sucks, but I'm not paying 50bucks for it.

The Tyson card is weak all-around, though I admit I wish I could see it, it's just I don't want to pay for it. We've been getting really good free fights lately though, and Roy Jones might be coming to Portland, so I'm doubley stoked.
So, Tyson got KO'd. I'm not surprised, really, as I think everyone thought there was a chance that this could happen, I feel bad for the guy, but he's too old and has fought enough recently to get his legs it seems. Didn't see the fight, just read the reports.

FNF was good AGAIN, keeping up a good month of fights. The opener between the two local kids was a good spat, though neither is anywhere near world-class they were evenly matched, traded KD's and put on a good show, I'd watch a rematch between these guys, it was fun fight to watch. The main event was also good, and Linton has a lot of skills, why this guy hasn't stepped up sooner I'm not sure, but he better step up soon because the guy is getting old. Fun fight to watch again, even though I thought it was pretty one-sided for Linton, Beuapierre put out a great effort.

It's sad that Tyson gets as much publicity as he did for the fight. It takes away from all the other fighters that are much more talented. I hope this puts Tyson away for good, but knowing things it won't. They'll blaim everything on his knee.

The only reason why I would think about buying tonights PPV is because JCC's son is fighting. I'd like to see what he can do, I've read some positive things.
I was thinking about it today and I'm like "How long have we been saying - If Tyson just dedicates himself and trains he can be right back in it." Whats it been now 7? 8 years? The man is done. He was done before Lewis. Hes never gonna bother trying. That the most frustraiting thing. I would give him a shot against ANY of the 4 belt holders if he bothered to train. He's still got his power.

As bad as the Buster Douglas fight was for him, it was the 1st Holyfield fight that really finished him. Early in the fight, he hits Holy with a monster shot. Holyfield takes a step back, regroups and hits him back. I remember that eliciting a huge cheer form the 20 or so of us crammed into my moms living room to watch it. It showed all you had to do was hang with Tyson and not show fear. He'd crumble eventually. Christ, Danny Williams pulled it off.

However, if the knee injury is legit, a rematch with Williams wouldn't be so bad. Danny would make as much or more for that as he would to (more than likely) lose to Byrd, Klitchko, or Ruiz. I'd make him a pick em with Brewster.

Who saw that great Freitas vs. Corrales fight. I just Knew he'd catch that fraud. What a horrible thing to do to your fans "just quit". Freitas did't even look hurt after that 3rd knock down. But i did know that someone was going to expose him sooner or later like Barerra did to Nasseem. Some guys don't have the skill to be with the elite but do have the power. I expect the same result in the Trinidad vs Mayorga fight. I think Trinidad will KO him in like 3 or 4 rounds, less if he doesn't need to feel him out.
Has anyone heard anything about Wladimir Klitschko being poisoned before the brewster fight? Last I heard a "huge investigation" was being launched, then, nothing. If your not up to date, the story is, supposedly, the high blood sugar and subsequent vanishing of all blood and urine tests was part of a vast conspiracy to cash in on the lopsided odds. The fact that the numbers dropped so drastically minutes before the fight also added to the speculation.
Old news and nothing ever turned up. I think anyone who watched the fight thought it was an odd happening. Brewster didn't win the fight he just didn't lose the fight, Klit just fell apart tired, couldn't move was one of the weiredest things I've ever seen. For a guy in such great shape it's suspicious, but we'll never know.

He's fighting DaVarryl Williamson on the RJJ vs Glencoffe Johnson undercard. We'll see how he does, but he has the best offense of ANY heavyweight out there, he just has that chin issue and a stamina issue, but man the guy is an all out offensive master in there, if his brother had 3/4 of his skill he'd be unstoppable.

Corrales is now my favorite fighter! The guy is just awesome and I'd love to see him take on PBF or Castillo.

And man what a fucking letdown TNF was, Sheika vs Butler promised a brawl and we got two ripe turds in the ring. Butler had no fucking game at all and Sheika was just waiting for Butler just to do something.

Two pretty big upsets last night: JC Candelo got beat by a nobody who came in with 7hrs notice. JC had no answer for the longer reach of Sanchez, but in the end I had him winning the fight, but Sanchez won the crowd, but was throwing a lot of slappy shots. Candelo didn't take the fight too him early enough and it hurt him, I think he though Sanchez would tire out, which he just really never did. Big win for Sanchez though, but not sure he'll ever have a night like this again.

The other one was Juan Carlos Gomez, the #2 WBC ranked Heavyweight getting TKO'd by a nobody in the 1st rd on Telefutura last night. Wow, what can you say, I never liked Gomez that much, and I'd seen Azcuy fight Asipeli before and knew he had some skills but wow, still a big upset.

Not a good night for goes named JC.
Anyone watch showtime this past weekend?

Corey Spinks looked good and Lamon Brewster looked like crap getting a gift win over "some guy".

The best part of the night came after the the Brewster fight, Jim Grey asks Don King whats next for Brewster. Don says Holyfield. Jim Grey visibly rolls his eyes and says "Holyfield? COME ON!" Hilarious. Wow does the heavyweight division suck hairy man balls right now.
It does when the fight doesn't have Mesi, the Klitschkos or James Toney.

I think a lot of the problem is the promoters lately, not putting together good fights, but the fighters ain't putting in much effort either.

There's been some good HW fights lately though, just not a lot of great ones.

2 great fights tonight. Santos and Margarito was great, sad it got stopped early, but can't say we didn't see that coming. Santos has never looked as poised and fired up as he was tonight. I had it 5 - 4 Santos though 9 and I'm glad he got the nod, he deserved it. He had Margarito confused, upset, and desperate. Not easy.

The other fight, holy shit, this was Cotto's coming out party. Cotto's last few fights left me with huge huge doubts, but this fight was him becoming a true great. He still has a ways to go, but he has all the skills to be a dominate champion for a long time. He came in with a gameplan stuck too it, and took out a great tough hard nosed fighter in Pinto. If Cotto comes in this condition for every fight, watch out.

Great fights.
Like the announcers said, Cotto' style is remniscient of Tyson-that defense and short, punishing hooks. He didn't look challenged at all and took Pinto out when he decided to. That said, i think Pinto could be a pretty damn good fighter with the right trainer. He hust had no defense to that short left hook.

Re: the first fight, if Margarito had some hand speed, he would be awesome. Unfortunately, he has to rely on those long looping shots. Even then, santos didn't seem to be able to get away from him or at least want to. Good hard fight nonetheless and Margarito's cut-man should get a raise.
Who's getting the fight saturday?????

I obviously want Bhop to win, but I would just be happy with an entertaining fight with no shadyness in the judging/ref.

Oscar is acting like he knows this is it if he loses. Hopkins is Hopkins. I just can't see DLH winning. If its close going to the cards though....... shadyness could be in play. Oscar vs Trinidad 2 would be HUGE.

I'm sticking to Bernard by 8th round tko..........but now I'm feeling Hopkins ud12. Christ, watch Oscar ko him in the 1st then roll around in a big pile of money from our 60$ ppv fees. =)
I'll hop in and say Hopkins will take it. Probably by KO in the 8th. If De La Hoya wins it'll be by TKO in the 12th or decsion. Should be a very entertaining fight. Oscar better dance and not go toe to toe. Hopkins is not Vargas and he sure as hell isn't that german who he fought last. Oscar better have his fighting legs he didn't look like it last time. We'll see what happens.
I'm shocked. I'm shocked there hasn't been any commentary regarding the De La Hoya vs Hopkins fight, and even more shocked that Roy Jones Jr. got knocked the fuck out, AGAIN!

I know some people are not fans of Roy because of his arrogance, but he's the guy that got me into boxing in the first place and it's a shame he's going to have to go out like this. It looks like he's been living on pure, natural talent this whole time and now he's dying due to its decline. He never looked like he was into the fight tonight and late, when he should have been stepping it up to win some rounds, he failed to do anything significant.

To see him down on the mat like that for as long as he was down was heartbreaking. It was like he was some old man, way passed his prime, but the man is only 35! I'll be really surprised if he doesn't retire after this. After tonight, I fear any comeback attempts will only further diminish his illustrious career.

And with regards to the DLH vs. Hop fight, De La Hoya really had no chance. In the first few, feeling each other out rounds, he did a good job scoring points, but since they didn't do any damage it was only a matter of time before Hopkins figured him out and beat him. When Hopkins started to impose his will, DLH had no answer. I'm still torn as to whether De La Hoya took a dive to save himself from getting beat down the rest of the fight, or whether he really did just get caught in the right spot with that punch. It didn't look too devastating, even in the multiple slow-mo replays, but you never know.

I think De La Hoya is just outmatched at the higher weight class and should move back down. I don't think DLH should retire, he's just not a middleweight. Roy, however, should just hang them up because even if he goes down to middleweight, I don't think he could get past Hopkins. And there's no way he'd even get a shot at Hopkins without proving himself against some other fighters first, which is sadly doubtful at this point.

What a wild couple of weeks in boxing! I'm really surprised there hasn't been more chatter 'round these parts. Maybe the resident chewers who are fans of the sweet science are on hiatus. But, hell, these events brought a chronic lurker like myself out of hiding, so come on!
Riddick Bowe won his first fight back tonight. A knockout in the 2nd round. Can't remember the guys name he was fighting. Bowe looked pretty sharp though, even though he was fighting a bum.
Wow, what can you say. Roy relied on his hand speed and his reflexes. He still has the handspeed, but he just isn't seeing punches the same anymore. It's sad watching him get hit by a punch that he would of turned over on a guy years ago and stung back with a counter. It's time for Roy to hang up the gloves, because he'll never be a stand-up boxer/brawler and that is the only way he could continue at this level. His heart wasn't in it also, after the 4th rd or so he just went through the motions.

Too bad people for awhile will remember these last few fights instead of the 48 previous fights where Roy hardly lost a rd.
I watched that fight thinking "Okay, any time now, Roy is just going to unleash and put this guy away." I said that to myself the entire fight until he got his ass knocked out. He just looked all kinds of out of sorts. His hand speed is still there and I have to believe he can still punch. But his defense just plain sucked and he didn't do any work in that fight. At one point, I think it was the 7th or so, he threw 24 punches in the round and landed like 7. You're not gonna beat even a bad fighter if you don't throw punches. And no matter how weak a puncher your opponent is, if you just sit back on the ropes and cover up, he's bound to hit you with something before too long. Still, I was convinced was just playing possum and jsut hoping to take some punches and get some work in. I'm sure we'll here some excuse about why he lost but this time, I might actually believe. That just didn't look like RJ out there. No energy, no real movement. Maybe he's still in mourning over all his chickens or maybe he just lost "it". Unbelievable.

And have you ever seen someone hit their head that hard on the canvas? Wow.
in the pictures I've seen of the Bowe fight, he looked REALLY FAT. But, he's had a long layoff. If he sticks to the plan of fighting a lot, he could be back into a good shape soon. Obviously the opponent was ass and they probally will be Ken Lakusta types for a while, so who knows where hes at skillwise or even brain damagewise. Hey, Oliver McCall also won on the undercard.

Roy is DONE. I'm thinking that after he beat Ruiz and had a tough time with Tarver in their 1st fight, he lost the love. After the 2nd Tarver fight his interview was something about how he didn't need to do this anymore, coming down to a lighter weight was something he did for the fans blah blah. Then Johnson is just all over him and Roy more or less gave up....oh and yeah then he got brutally KOd. Through the whole fight it just didn't even seem like Roy gave 2 shits about anything. Again I really feel that after he beat Ruiz and then had a HARD fight with Tarver he just lost the love of the game.

Oscar got beat. 1 round later than I thought, but the fight was kinda boring at times. Not really much to discuss as everyone seemed to think that Oscar would lose and he did.
Hopkins was just too big, too strong, and too good for Oscar. Though skill wise if Hopkins was Oscars natural size it woulda been a different fight, but Oscar loses so much when he can't sit on his punches and in the end that's what got him, the fact that Hopkins was just a much bigger guy, Oscar was a bloated welter and Hops is a natural super-middle.

I can't wait to watch Hopkins get KO'd. Can't stand the guy. He's an asshole who's has lived off beating chumps and blown up lesserweights. Let's see Hopkins go up to Lt Heavy or Cruiser and see how HE does.

People tend to forget that when watching these fights.

I have to agree about Hopkins. He is a great fighter, but his biggest wins, Trinidad and Oscar, came against blown up guys. He needs to put himself in there with somebody bigger and see what happens, I would love to see him fight Tarver. That would be a great fight if they met somewhere like at 175 or somehting. But if he lost they'll probably start talking about how he got old over night or something.
I don't know if we'll see Hop go up, mostly because he knows and we know that he would get torn up. Just like DLH, the things that make Hop so good at this weight he would lose when he went up. Of course, that never stopped anyone.
Hop wouldn't be able to abuse smaller guys by rough-house tactics and losing a lil' pop on his punches against bigger guys would also hurt him. Tarver could probably KO Hopkins.. Just look how Hop was backed up by Oscars flurries (which weren't hard punches) now imagine Tarver's power behind those flurries.

Of course if Tarver beat him, it'll be like RJJ all over again, he's just "old".

To sum up Saturday night in 3 words:

TITO IS BACK
If every boxing match was as exciting and fun as the Trinidad vs. Mayorga bout, then Boxing would be the most popular sport in the world. That was a true joy to watch. In fact, even though I caught it on HBO replay a week late, I believe that was definitely Pay per View worthy. Tito looked terrific, but I have to say I was almost equally impressed by Mayorga. That fucker would not give up! Tito was landing some precise and MEAN blows to Mayorga's nuclear colored noggin, but Mayorga kept coming back with crazy flurries. I hope Mayorga goes back down a weight class and fucks some more folk up at his own size for awhile so I can have more fun. And I hope Trinidad comes on to fuck some folks up at his weight class because he looked GREAT. Endurance, toughness, reflexes, and skill all in one package is a great thing to see. Hopkins better watch out because his title is in trouble.
Zoo destroyed Mitchell last night. Wow.. I mean I kinda wanted it to happen, but dammit if it wasn't awesome to watch!

Mitchell took the wrong approach to this fight, go toe to toe with Tsyzu? You gotta be kidding.

The last time Hopkins lost was over 10 years ago. I doubt anyone will beat him anytime soon. Do you really think that Trinidad would beat him? Wasn't it Hopkins that beat Trinidad and sent him to retirement? Mayorga is a sloppy bastard, if he fought Hopkins, he would be outboxed and outskilled and will lose

Damn it all. I missed that fight. I need to do a better job of keeping my eye on the calendar of upcoming fights. Can you recap it in a nutshell Xtian?

Man I moved about a month ago and I have no internet at my house, I don't even have fuckin cable. I've missed the Tito fight, and the fight last Saturday. Which sucks cause I like watching Kosta knock fools out. So I'm all out of it. I need to find somebody with HBO before the Mosley-Wright fight, then find a place to watch MAB-Morales 3.

El_Gaupo check this out for the highlights and the final rd of Zoo-Mitchell.

Zoo-Mitchell fight clips

Anyone ordering the fights tonight.. I want to watch em, just don't want to pay for them. Dammit.

Fuck Boxing, Fuck Chris Byrd, Fuck John Ruiz, Fuck the judges, Fuck the fact Ruiz somehow stole another one, Fuck boxing

That's all.
Now Now Now,
Its not Fuck all those guys its Fuck the heavyweight division.

I learned that a long time ago. I'm only 25 but ilearned that almost 10 years ago.

If you like big dudes who get tired by the 3rd round and hold throught the rest of the fight. Then i guess that division is your cup of tea.

Now saturday night i'm looking forward to the Barerra vs morales 3 replay and the taylor/joppy fight.

mmm.......mmm.......mmm now that is good fighten!

Reset
Man Joppy looked like a has-been on Sat. He can take a punch but that was some tired, old cocky bullshit he was pulling. Go out with some dignity please instead of a punk. Taylor is the real deal but I don't know if he's good enough to beat Trinidad or Hopkins. He can damn well give them a fight but I don't know if he has the speed and power to take them out.
Man, Danny Williams got the beat down. Glen Johnson vs Tarver was great, and I'm glad Glen won a close one finally, Tarver didn't deserve the win with the way he fought.

Was a great great year, and 2005 should be just as good.
Resurrecting this thread because it's had some of my favorite sports commentary here at Chud, and because next to my euthanized Hockey, Boxing is my favorite sport.

The Erik Morales vs. Manny Pacquaio fight (which I didn't pay for, but I believe was honestly pretty Pay Per View worthy) was terrific. I saw it exactly like the ring-side judges (which is amazing these days) but was still very impressed with Pac-Man. He's seemed like so much of a front-loaded warrior who can't hold on, but he showed some serious courage and stamina after the head-butt cut. Going in, I thought Paccy was outmatched, but he really fought hard and showed that he's got a bit more of a repertoire than most people have given him credit for. I still think that any fight with the Pac Man is going to be extremely entertaining. I can't wait for whatever Bbarrera/Morales/Pacquaio fight. I know it'll be a blast!

The Vargas vs. Joval fight was mediocre at best. Vargas is so much more talented than Joval, that I thought he really should have shined more in the fight. I know Fernando has had some physical problems, but the last Joval fight I saw was pretty weak. Maybe Joval got really geared up for the fight and tried to show something impressive, but what I saw was that Vargas fought enough to win, but didn't really dominate the way I expected him to. Going in I thought Vargas would get a knockout in 5 or 6. He recovered nicely from a nasty nut-shot, but still, he should have killed Joval in that fight. Vargas will really have to step it up if he wants to be a truly competitive boxer at this stage.
Wow, this is the only thread I really miss here still.

I'm still bummed about Corrales/Castillo II.

I am stoked I got tickets to Mayweather/Mitchell in Novemeber!
Good to have it back. Unfortunately, I hardly feel like there's been any good fights to discuss. Pac-man's last fight was pretty good, I guess. He was hurt badly but hung around and ended up with either a KO or TKO. I can't remember which.
