That was a great fight to watch. Not necessarily the kind of fight to show why the call it the 'sweet science', but it was two guys with a lot of heart and guts that didn't want to give up. I give Sanders a lot of credit, that fool was taking some shots.

I think Vitaly is going to try to avenge his brother's loss to Brewster first. He'll whupp him and add another belt to the list. But it does suck that King has the other belts, so now Vitaly has to sell his soul to get all the titles. I think he can do it too, it'll be great for the sport, shit they had highlight of the fight on SportsCenter, and how often does that happen.

Can't wait for the Pac/Marquez fight now.
You gotta remember that Gomez is a blown up cruiserweight just like Toney.. and Klits a 6'7" robot. Gomez could get killed.

I'd love to see Klitscko vs. Mesi, though I think Mesi would get beaten it'd be damn entertaining.

I hope Tyson stays away, he'll get killed against any live opponent, I'd pick Barett to beat him these days.
I also wish Pac/Marquez was right now.

Out of the WBC top ten only decent fight I see is Gomez. I figure Vitally will take an easier fight for his 1st defense anyway.

The problem with the other belt holders is that Don King holds all the cards. Vtally would have to sign with him to get a shot at any of them. I think Brewster is the argining chip he could use to get Vitally or James Toney to sign with him, since most people consider Brewster to be worse than Ruiz.

I'd like to see Brewster and Ruiz unify while Byrd rematches Golota and Vitally fights...somebody. Byrd/Golota winner vs Vitally with Toney vs the Ruiz/Brewster winner, then those 2 winners meet. But instead we'll probally get some really shitty fights for a while. No one is clamoring for Byrd vs Ruiz, and 99.9% of the world has no idea who Brewster is.
Naw, Vitaly will fight a big name. There's no legitimacy or "big" money in the heavweight division as it is, that's why he was calling out Lennox Lewis after the fight to come out of retirement and fight him. Without beating Lennox, Vitaly is just a paper champion and he knows it. I don't expect the HW division to be good again until you get some up and coming personality a la 80's Tyson to inject a little enthusiasm back in. We need a knock out artist. I though Tua was going to be the heir apparent but he fell off the face of the earth.

A fight I'd pay to see in the HW? Roy Jones vs. Vitaly. It'll never happen but man, I can dream about the possibility. I just think it would be a fun fight as Roy would be extremely outmatched.
Brewster holds only a minor-level belt though, you've got to remember that. The WBO is the least regarded of all the ABC's. Typically it's a euro-level belt, and never really considered a championship level belt. Nobody ever considered Wlad a heavyweight champion when he held it. Same with Sanders and all those before them. Though King could sell it as a revenge card with say a Winky/Shane rematch with a a Vitili/Brewester headliner.

I'd watch, though I'd expect Winky to repeat his domination and Brewster to get beat by KO in the 5th or 6th rd (if not sooner).

I'm still sold on Klitschko/Mesi as being the most action-packed exciting heavyweight card that can booked right now (next to Toney/Jones Jr at heavy). I mean shit it's fucking Rocky all over again, you could sell that fucker. Although I'd admit that it'd look better if Klitschko would say beat someone like Byrd or Ruiz and Mesi would beat Tyson to legitimize the fight a little more, but I think there's a risk that either could lose before it'd happen.

I never really liked the guy as a champ. For every great performance he gave he gave another poor one. There was a time that he was really dedicated to the fight game, and was serious about clearing of the so-called-"trash" of the day. His loss to Rahman was really bad, despite killing him in the rematch, it really hurt his overall appeal. Rahman is slightly above journeyman level.

I've often found Lewis' style boring to watch, and though confident and arrogant he often didn't let that out in the ring often enough. Highly skilled but I can't group him with the best of all-time.

But then again even the greatest of all-time probably wouldn't of been the greatest of all time if they would of enforced the rules with him, since Ali was notrious for holding/pushing/rabbit punching/etc.
Lewis is probably one of the best heavyweight fighters to come along in a long time. In both size and skills, he was unmatched. Unfortunately, like Xtian said, he was never really liked as a champ by a large majority of people. Being an expatriot Brit growing up in Canada and training in the US makes it hard. Furthermore, Lewis did not dedicate himself to the sport like many wished he would, showing up out of shape and unprepared on several occassions. In the end however, I believe Lewis's biggest problem was the lack of quality opponents in the heavyweight division. Having an incredible rival or rivals really adds to a boxer's mystique and Lewis, even in his prime, really didn't have one. Instead, he had to fight over the hill, has been fighters or fighters like Rahman that he never should have lost to in the first place. Of course, Tyson (in his prime) did it without a big rival, but he did it by fucking punishing people and the fan loves that. Lewis was a boxer and an unflamboyant one at that. Had he come along say a decade before he really came on, I believe we would have been looking a thim in a whole different light.

To be honest I never like Lewis either. He just seemed so smug and arrogant to me all the time. It's hard to size up his career because of how weak the division was for the longest time. But he did get knocked out by Rachman and I think it was McCall, not too sure. If he really wanted to be considered one of the greatest he would have trained hard and came prepared for every fight. I mean look how he came in against Vitaly, and he almost lost because of it. To me that takes a lot away from Lewis.

But I will say this, his size would have given any other heavyweight in history problem. If Lewis went into a fight in prime shape, it would be hard to count him out against any other heavyweight champ.
I'd pick him over Ali if the ref made Ali stop all that bullshit he always pulled.

I wasn't too sure if I should start a new thread, or not, but what are your takes on the fight this saturday. Pac vs. Marquez, is going to be one of the best fights of the year.

I'm going with PacMan. This guy just does not stop throwing punches, and his speed is going to be too much for Marquez. Any thoughts?
Thread Starter
I just really think his speed and volume of punches is going to be the difference of the fight. Unless Marquez can hurt him a couple of times early, Pacquaio will keep on coming.
I'd say Pac without a doubt but then again, I haven't seen Marquez fight all that much. That little Phillipino has some power too. They're not just "touches".
Taking Marquez in this one, I like Pacman but I'm hesitant to pick him on the Barrera fight because I'm just not sure that's the best fight to judge him on (MAB looked "off").

BTW I say let's keep this thread an ongoing with updates instead of starting new threads!

I'm actually stoked for FNF this week Savarese vs Nolan, since this is a big step up for Nolan and it'll be nice to see how Savarese will do after the layoff, hopefully he didn't sign up to just lose. Lou was always a good journeymen fighter who just couldn't take a top tier punch, but he's fun to watch. Especially fun to watch get KO'd.

I'm also looking forward to the fights on NBC on Saturday. I like Bojado, it's taking him a while to get his shit together, but when he does he's going to make some noise. Plus if he wins we can see what he can do agains Jesse James Leija.
this is going to be a great fight! I'm leaning towards Pacquiao myself!

Anyone ordering Jones/Tarver 2? Im leaning towards getting it. God awful heavyweight Bruce Seldon makes his PPV return on the undercard. Wow, that sucks.
Jones Jr undercards typically suck.
I want to get it, but I don't want to pay for a Roy Jones Jr fight.

His undercards almost always suck, and I think his fights are usually pretty boring. I think he is a great fighter, but I've never been a huge fan.
Well the Savarese/Nolan fight sucked. Lou was obviously stronger but didn't seem to be motivated at all. Nolan did nothing but throw a few punches and then hold ala Ruiz.

The only thing to look forward too is someone KO'ing Nolan in spectacular fashion ala Savarese/Johnson.

Anyone live will kill Nolan.
christ.

Cotto/N"dou was a lot like N'dou/Mitchell. Cotto won handily and N'dou kept it interesting.

A draw is annoying for Pacquiao/Marquez. The 1st round was the worst thing that could have happened to Pac. Looked like he looked for that one left hand shot all night and nothing else. Props to Marquez for the come back. The scoring is crappy (again with this in a fight). But Pac let the guy off the hook and back into a fight he looked like he was going to blow out him out. Sucks.

BULLSHIT

BULLSHIT

BULLSHIT

It wasn't that fact that it was a draw. It was a close fight. It was the fact that the scoring was SO WACKED.

What the fuck was that geezer Canadian guy watching?

A 10-7 round 1? WHAT THE FUCK?

The one reason I hate and love boxing: Judges.
I love Pac Man, but I almost think he was lucky in some ways to get a draw. After the first round, Marquez really took control of the fight. And on a selfish level, the draw means we'll probably see these two guys thrown down again. Since this was such a fun fight to watch, the rematch should be great too. However, it was pretty sad that the deciding judge blew the scoring on the first round. A ten point difference between 2 judges and one miscores a round. It's flat-out bullshit that a judge doesn't want to let the scoring get out of hand so he purposely miscores a round. This is why boxing can be such a travashamockery (yes I know some will cringe at my use of that commercial joke, but I think it's a perfectly cromulent word.) Hopefully we'll get some decent scoring in the rematch. And hopefully Pac Man will develop a different strategy if he wants to win it.
The fight was great, until the judges ruined it. I could understand pulling a draw with the scores close. I could understand letting either of them win with the score close. But to do this shit? Oh well... judges ruin boxing.

That was a tough fight to score. I thought JMM was boxing great in the middle rounds and deserved to get alot of those in the cards, but to say 10 out of the 11 is pretty crazy. It was bullshit that the one judge scored the first round 10-7, if there are three knockdowns you have to score each knockdown. We'll see if Manny can do anything different the next fight because I think JMM is probably going to be the favorite going into it. Take away that first round and JMM would have probably walked away with the W.

And did anybody listen to Tarver run his mouth in the interview after the fight. I'm not a Jones nutthugger, but he was out of shape and still won the last fight. He's going to come in ready next week and shut Tarver up, easily.
Early KD's aren't always good for a fighter if he doesn't take him out.

I had Pac winning it close, I thought he did enough in the last 5rds to pull it out.

How the judge game JMM 10 of the last 11?? Did he watch the same fight I did?

And the mistake in scoring, which the judge admitted to screwing up. A draw is just a huge disappointment here. Because I was looking forward to Morales/PacMan not JMM/Pac 2. Both guys got robbed in this fight, which is hard to explain, but a draw is such a bullshit decision, because in the end you have to ask, why the fuck did we do this. No body wins, both people really lose in that case. I could of accepted either guy winning close, but not this and not the scoring they had.

Fucking terrible.
I'm pretty sure I am gonna break down and order the Jones/Tarver ppv....if you guys want I can do round by round updates, let me know!
I think I'd like that, since I can't find enough people to go into a PPV these days, other than my dad.

I'll probably buy it too. My roomate wants to get it and if we can find somebody else it'll only be like 15 bucks a piece. I really want to see Jones kick Tarver's ass, but there is shit on the undercards so we'll see.

Just cursious but who are some of your favorite fighters right now? I've been a Vargas fan for days, but I don't know how much he'll be in the game. Either way he's my favorite fighter, puts it all on the line every fight, steriods and all.
Guapo
screw that they'll replay it next week on HBO

Here's what I do: since boxing isn't huge and its just an ok fight like that tarver/jones no drama affair, i just skip sports center for a day usually sunday and come the next saturday. sit back with some mexican food a beer and enjoy the new fight (mayweather) and the rebroadcast.( don't be in the room for the first 15 mins of the hbo rebroadcast they tell you right away who won and usually what happened. come in when Buffer starts to blow)

PS
did any of you catch the Bojado fight on NBC sat. afternoon. He popped the mouthgaurd out of that guys face with 10 seconds left. Man i say that kids my new favorite fighter.

As a boy my favorite was: Chavez

In my teens: DeLaHoya

In my twenties: Bojado
I guess Barrera was in between Delahoya and bojado
post #81 of 241
My favorite all time is Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield. Currently, I like V. Klitchko, Mesi (he sucks...so what), Mayweather, and Roy Jones...oh yeah and the man B. Hopkins.
I just like good fights.. my fav fight this year is Sheika/Pemberton 2. So far untouched for FoTY. Mesi/Jirov was exciting. Winky/SSM was fun to watch.

But Sheika/Pemberton was an all-out brawl. I want to see Pemberton get a shot at a big fight, wish someone would make this happen, the guy deserves it, wants a house for his family, and he deserves it. HBO make this happen.
JOE MESI is WBC #1!! Holy crap!: ROCKY 4 will really happen! Joe better start training by running up a mountain right now!

WBC
champion - V. Klitchko
1) Joe Mesi
2) Juan Carlos Gomez
3) James Toney
4) Hasim Rahman
5) Henry Akinwande
6) Jameel McCline
7) David Tua
8) Mike Tyson
9) Monte Barrett
10) Davarryl Williamson.

These rankings are either horrid or the division is just really awful right now. No way Mesi is ready for Vitali. Toney is injured, Tyson and Tua havent fought in a year. AKINWANDE? GAH! Henry should fight Ruiz in a hugging match! I would take Vitali over every single person in the top 10 except a healthy/in shape toney...and that would be a pick em.

Can't wait till tomorrow night either!
Thread Starter
It would only be great if Vitaly told Mesi, "I must break you." before the start of the fight. I really don't know about the rankings, their fucked up, the whole heavyweight division is fucked up.
Actually, I think they are ok.

Why, because I'm glad that some of the younger guys (or you should say newer) are getting a chance to move up in class, it becomes now or never time for them. Which is good, it will weed out the lame ducks and give a chance for someone to stand out. It's hard to justify many others to take the place of these guys that has stunk the place up lately. And Ruiz, Byrd, and Brewster can't be listed because they hold other belts.
the Alphabet Soup rankings are 99% of the time garbage, but seriously they gotta get the people who havent fought in a year or more outta there. Tua is undefeated in a year........cause he hasnt fought in a year and his last fight was a draw to Rahman. Such garbage. Mesi may not be ready for prime time, but at least he's been active. Same for Barrett, McCline, and Touch of Sleep, who just beat E. Castillo and is signed to fight Ray Mercer. Tyson beat the Black Rhino in what feels like 10 years ago.

FNF hasn't been too bad tonight, the KO in the 1st fight was great!
ppv so far

Gerald Nobles kod Seldon. Seldon looked SHOT, Nobles looked like garbage. Anyone in the top 20 would take him apart.

Zab Judah clowned his way to a boring win over Pineda. Pineda made it real close....seemingly only cause Zab decided to clown rather than fight.

Hyping up the main event now......

GREATEST 'Dazed right after punch' look i've seen in a while. He totally caught Roy offguard. Goodbye Junior.
For the whole of the fight (all 1 and a 1/2 rounds of it) RJJ looked better and landed more. then he got KTFO. Holy crap, I can't believe it.

Crazy shit. Was it better than the dance by Zab in the Kosta fight?
I thought Roy would get up, but he was so dazed. I guess he's never been hit that hard. Then the funniest thing was after the KO, Tarver was so excited that he knocked out the cameraman. He came off the ropes and slammed his glove onto the camera. Then the announcer says "THERE'S A FIGHT IN THE RING! A FIGHT HAS BROKEN OUT!"
Thread Starter
Did he say anything about a rematch?
nah. Zabs chicken dance was better. Roy was definitly KTFO though....
I don't know, i got a phone call right after the fight and only saw some of Tarver's post fight interview.

Before the fight the ref asked 'do you have any questions?' and Tarver said "Yeah, you got any excuses tonight, Roy?". Then when he was in his corner he said something to his trainer like "Respect? Don't say that word. There is no fuckin respect!"

However, post fight you could see that Tarver apologized to Roy. Tarver didn't trash Jones at all during the post fight interview, and you have to think Jones will come back, so....
Roy in his post fight interview insinuated that he wouldn't fight Tarver again and said he only came down to 175 for the fans. He used the weight as an excuse again. He also said if he does come back it would be at heavyweight because those are the only fights he can get up for.
You'd think he would try again with Tarver since he was embarrased, but i guess he doesn't want any part of that .

Dude I think it would be better for his legacy if he could come back and take the rubber match. The only heavyweight I would want to see him fight is Vitaly.
