Getting ID'd for Video Games

So when did this practice start? I go into Best Buy and decided to (finally) buy Halo (got an X-Box at Christmas, just now getting around to Halo). When I go up to the counter to pay (along with two DVDS, both rated R), the clerk IDs me for Halo. Huh? Best Buy will ID for games, but not for movies? How stupid is that? Besides the fact that I am 31 and look nothing close to 17 (hell, I even have white hairs in my goatee now). I can't even remember the last time I was Id'd for cigs or alcohol, but Best Buy will ID me for a video game.

Nothing wrong with the practice of IDing, but if you are going to do it, then you should ID for all products. Oh, and the guy in line with tattoos, who looks older than 30? Why check his ID?

Yeah I'm 19 (a bit young looking) and got ID'd at Wurst Buy. Load of bullshit.

The practice of ID chekcing contrary to logic is spreading rapidly. Yesterday at Shaw's Supermarket a 50 year old man in line in front of me, with nearly all gray hair got asked for his ID for cigarettes.

The cashier (a woman of about 60) said that she would settle for just putting the birthdate in the computer, though. The guy refused to give up his birthdate. Wanting to get out of there sometime in the next century, I told the guy "Dude, just make one up...April 1st 1943 or something." That seemed to satisfy the cashier.

The cigarette guy was probably using cash, but I've been ID'd before whenever using a credit card. That makes enough sense to me with large purchases (and a game and two dvds isn't very large, but it's not as small as a pack of cigs). Of course, if you were paying with cash, there's no excuse whatsoever, and if you had the time I would recommend busting the person's chops about it for a while.

I'm 19, I look 15, and I never get carded at my local Best Buy. I think it's just that the employees don't care. Fine with me.

This was before she even rang up my purchases. She saw the game, and then asked me for my ID. Hell, if she asked me for ID while paying with a credit card (verifying that I am the cardholder), no problem. She asked me for ID before even ringing up my purchase. I asked her why the ID, and she said it was Best Buy policy. I was tempted to ask her why she didn't ID the kid in front of me, that was buying a "R" rated movie. Just not worth the trouble.

See, that's the difference between you and me. I enjoy being an asshole when it suits me. Of course, I say now that I would have argued for minutes and eventually left for another register instead of caving in, but if I was actually in your place I probably would have just given her a look and handed her my ID.

Then I would have gone and told my friends how I totally put her in her place and got her to apologize.

Did any of you who got carded use a credit card?

Because I got carded when I used a credit card to purchase over 100 dollars worth of DVD's and games at BB.

Credit card users -- is the back of your card signed?

You guys that are about to yell at cashiers for getting carded need to lighten up. You're all apparently old enough to buy the games. Just hand them your damn license and satisfy policy. It takes 5 seconds. It's lame, but it's life.

Little hypocritical though. Let's see, company will ID to buy a video game, but not ID for R rated movies? Oh, and I sign the back of my credit card, the minute I get the card in the mail.

Perhaps they check the name of both the credit card and the license.

It might not be a question of age.

Also, retailers are getting warned about selling matures games to the youngins than R-Rated movies.

Hell, when I was 16, I remember being asked to see my ID when I rented an R-Rated movie at Blockbuster. However, when I bought a new R-Rated movie from from the very same place. They didn't even ask to see my ID.

Definitely not about matching credit card to driver's license. As I said before, they checked my ID before even ringing up the products. If a company is going to have an age policy, then it needs to be applied uniformly. How ridiculous is it that a 31 yr old man gets ID'd for a video game, but a kid that looked about 14 did not get ID'd when buying a R rated movie?

I really don't know why. Maybe the manager was near.

I would ask them candidly why they are carding me as I am handing it over.
