Who the craps going to win the Stanley Cup?

Just for those rare american hockey fans.

Been waiting for someone to start a playoff thread.

Philly's looking allright right now. Still too early to guess, though, for me...
I'm really happy with the way the Flyers are playing right now. But I don't know if Esche will be able to take us all the way.

I think the Red Wings are looking solid out west. In the East, I think Boston, Philly and Toronto are all contenders. Not so sure about Tampa.

But as always, it depends on how the goaltending holds up. But I think those teams are strong enough in front of the goalie to go far.
It was good to see Marleau get back in some good goals for the Sharks and as usual Nabokov is performing heroics, but, assuming we get further, I'm not looking forward to our inevitable whipping by Detroit.

I don't follow hockey anymore, but I've always thought that logo was tits.
how many teams will fold when the NHL goes on strike? I'd guess 8 but I really have no clue. With the looming stike doesn't it take alot out of the upcoming playoffs?
I guess simply because this may be the last playoffs for at least a season, most hockey fans are simply trying to savour the last moments they have of these magical 2 and a third months.

My prediction for the Western final is the Wings and Canucks with the Wings taking it in 6 and for the East, I'm seeing a 7 game series between the Leafs and the Lightning with the Leafs taking it and Coach Tortorella ripping someones head off.

In the end, it's gonna be Detroit that takes the cup and that will probably be it for the Wings for the next few years.

Kinks to my equation: Flames, Flyers, and Bruins.

(edit: the grammar police)
I think the looming lockout is adding even more intensity to this year's playoffs. A bunch of guys are talking about a long-term break, and they're thinking this may be their last good shot. The lockout will suck, but it looks like they're going out with a bang.
Helluva game for Nashville tonight. That's one hell of a rivalry they're developing with Detroit.
That Boston-Montreal game may well have had the funniest OT goal ever.

Alexei Kovalev gets nudged on the side, fakes getting smacked in the hand, tries (and fails) to draw the penalty, loses the puck, then runs into his own guy while Glen Murray grabs the puck and scores the winner.

Words do not do justice to the hilarity of this goal.
Amen. And Montreal really had them on the ropes for a while. I sure thought they'd win the second overtime.

Hilarious. Kovalev's gonna get it in the hometown press, I imagine...

Oh, that's right... one of my favorite habits during the playoffs is to check the out-of-town newspaper websites. Reading a columnist ripping into a series-losing team is always fun. (I'm thinking mainly of the viciousness brought forth in Philadelphia after the Flyers got bounced by the Sabres a couple years back. As a Buffalo fan, it sure made for a great way to start the morning.)

Montreal Gazette in the morning it is, then.
I LOVE how they describe it on the front page: (bold text mine)

Quote:
Kovalev lost the puck after being slashed on the arm by Travis Green of the Bruins, then collided with teammate Sheldon Souray while shaking his throbbing arm.

HAHAHAHAHA! Anyone who saw the "slash" would have to wonder just what exactly about it would make your hand "throb".
Flyers shut out the Devils tonight. Too cool.
This is what they need to get Esche on a nice run.

No kidding. I thought the Montreal media were supposed to be harsh. I did like the fact that even Kovalev's teammate and coach couldn't even vouch for the guy...
I hope the Bruins come back in this game and beat the Habs. Going into this series I was pretty ambivalent, but these punk ass Montreal wimps are pathetic.

I feel sorry for Montreal fans everywhere. And that's coming from a die hard Blackhawks fan. Fuck those diving disgraces.
I doubt the Cannucks can win without Bertuzzi. The West looks like it will be either Detroit or any other team that will lose to any of the Eastern Conference top 5 teams. 1 through 5 in the East has a better shot of beating the 2, 3, 4 teams in the West. I really like how Tampa Bay is playing right now. The Flyers are playing great defense right now with Eshe stepping up. I say it is either Tampa Bay or Philly in the East, though even Ottawa and Toronto could sneak in. I say Tampa Bay wins the cup over Detroit.
Got my money on Detroit. Okay I have no money on Detroit, but if I was putting money on a team to win this year, it'd be them.

that triple OT with Canucks vs. Flames was insane.

I wanted the Habs to win until that and the asspunk before him who twitched in pain, what a fucking disgrace to the game of hockey. I'd cheer for them but they're just a bunch of punk ass divers.
I want the Habs to win, but would settle for the Avalanche.
The Wings will win it. It sucks, but it's true.

You're just bitter as you've finally realized which team has the best talent in the league.

Any Leaf fans on this board can suck it long and hard.
They had the most talent last year and they sucked a Mighty Duck long and hard. In a perfect world the Flyers will get their payback from 1997.

We have long memories in Philly.

***Edited because somehow my point is less valid if the year is 1996 instead of 1997.
You don't -- 1997.
Toronto. Enough said.
Well, Boston choked. I was kinda sorta rooting for 'em too...
TB in 2004!
Again, I could say its the 1964 Phillies and it does not make a difference. Whether I said it was 1996, 1997, 2000, or 2039, it does not make a difference. The point is still valid.
Ooooo! Six seconds to go and Vancouver ties up the seventh game of the series. Geez, they're making Calgary work for the chance to lose to Toronto.
What is great about the east is that they are not only all very good teams, but extremely balanced. Toronto could win the East and probably give Detriot a run for their money (and win). You could say the same about the Flyers and Tampa.
Thanks for the update, Seabass. I watched the final goal and Vancouver can blame no one but Bertuzzi. It is really unfortunate because Vancouver really did have a great team that could have won the West.
But it didn't.
How was the reaction in Vancouver to Bertuzzi breaking that guy's spine?

Are they blaming him for how a great season and high expectations are now gone?

Well, you're talking about getting payback for when the Flyers lost to the Red Wings in 4 games in the Stanley Cup finals...So the year sort of does make a difference.

GO FLAMES GO!
The Red Wings are gonna sweep the Flames into oblivion and I'll be more than happy when that occurs.
I tend to pull for the underdogs and I absolutely HATE Detroit so I hope the Flames can upset the damned Dead Things, but that's going to be a tough battle.

I think I'll probably be watching the Leafs and Flyers most this round. Between the two teams they have many of my past favorite Blackhawks. It's probably my best chance to at least tangentially see 'Hawks players in the playoffs for some time. Eddie's has been one of my favorite goalies for a long time, so I think I'm pullin' for the Leafs. But it would be nice to see J.R. and Amonte do well, too. So that's a pretty safe series; win-win scenario.

I also hope the Sharks beat the Avs. The Sharks are nice dark horse team. I'd love to see a Sharks vs Lightning Stanley cup! Although I'm sure the league would be cringing to see San Jose and Tampa Bay in the finals. Not exactly the biggest revenue generating markets going into a possible lockout/strike. I'm sure they'd rather see Detroit and Philly.
LOVED that shot of the sad, stunned little Red Wings fan in the crowd after Calgary won game 1 in OT.

Die, Divers, DIE! Go Bolts!

This message brought to you by the Montreal Canadiens are a disgrace to hockey association.

We have a diver down. Repeat a diver down. Hopefully they will resurface next year, barring a lockout/strike. That is all Montreal.
Philly's looked downright ugly the last two games. Somebody needs to wake them up and remind them they're in the playoffs.

I wonder if Tampa's rest is gonna hurt or help 'em...
The Flyers are putting together 3 games worth of offense today.

That was friggin ridculous today. 6-2 Philly? What the fuck? What the hell was Belfour's problem? Jesus Christ on toast, Toronto better get it's God damn act together and least make these next two games worth while. Dumbasses. I was going for Toronto, but with todays game I think I may just hitch a ride on the Calgary Flames bandwagon.
Calgary beats Detroit in OT, and win series in 6.

I do not know why, but I really like Calgary's uniforms.

Anyway, its always good to see the Red Wings go down.

Detroit and Colorado both eliminated. My fantasy of a San Jose vs Tampa Bay Stanley Cup is coming true! I'm sure the owners are thrilled at the prospect of all these small-market, low-salaried teams beating the big-market, big-budget ones with the prospect of a labor dispute on the horizon. They'll be able to make such a great case for a salary cap.

Go Bolts and Go Jose!
I didn't think the Flyers were going to pull it out after giving up those two third period goals.
The Flyers have a history of blowing games like that. JRs shot was beautiful. It could not have been any better. Tampa has been extremely good this postseason... it is going to be fun.
