Anyway, try to remember how many Mario games there are. It's okay, I'll give you a second. Remember Mario Tennis? Mario Golf? Mario Teaches Typing? Mario Paint? Dr. Mario? Mario is Missing? Mario Family? Hotel Mario? I don't recall any innovation in those games. In fact, a cruel person might call them cheap cash-ins. |
I actually remember Mario Tennis pretty fondly, and eagerly await a sequel. Did you actually play that one, or just look at the title? It's a god damn great time.
Dr. Mario is an absolute classic. I didnt think there was a person alive who didnt like that one (though it isnt particularly original).
I had Mario Teaches Typing (actually called Marios Typing Tutor) but never heard of Mario Family or Hotel Mario.
Mario is Missing = Great. Marios Time Machine = Not Great.

| Now consider how often Nintendo simply takes an old Mario game, slightly improves its graphics, then sells it to a gullible public at full price. Remember how on N64 all Nintendo did was take ancient titles and slap "64" on the end? |
That was an unoriginal naming convention, but the actual games were still pretty innovative. Pilotwings 64, Starfox 64, Mario 64 and so on.
As for re-packaging old titles, I've no problem with it. I sell my old systems, and being able to have a package like Mario All-Stars that contains the games I would have otherwise left behind is pretty great. Same goes for having those games on my Game Boy Advance (though I wish they would make another collection instead of this 30-bucks-a-pop shit).

| I'm not going to deny that the series has created some great games, or that it was influential. But it's not anymore. Super Mario Sunshine was basically just Mario 64 with a higher polygon count. |
Granted, Mario Sunshine was nothing special. But its still only the FIRST GAME in the Mario series that didint make a huge splash in the gaming world. Forgetting the spinoff titles (which arent really part of the franchise to me anyway) Mario still has a lot of potential. Given that, I think he deserves at least one more chance.
But this isnt the fucking Save Mario Bros. thread. What franchises would I kill?
Tomb Raider. This never deserved to be a franchise. It did its thing, and the character got an encore in the sequel. That should have been enough.
Sonic the Hedgehog. I liked him on the Genesis, but the series now is so far from where it used to be I dont ever see it being good again. Tails and Knuckles are fine, but does every game now need 50 bullshit characters you never heard of unless you saw that shitty cartoon? Also, the idea of Sonic in 3d has been killed; they keep trying and making the same mistakes. Unless it goes 2d again, dump the fucker.
Tony Hawk. Newer courses and better graphics are about all you can do with these games now. The TH games set the standard for features in extreme sports games, but its time to go the fuck home.
Everquest. Because I've got a friend whose given his life over to this bullshit treadmill of a game, and i'm sick of him telling me he's busy because "my guild has a raid every day from 4 to 10, but I have a day off Sunday!" Fuck Everquest.
Addressing series that got some hate in this thread:
Final Fantasy: What the hell? The stories may not always be the most original, but each FF game i've played has knocked it out of the park in just about every vital area an RPG has. Characters, graphics, music, setting, design, and gameplay. They each also introduce radical changes to the battle system or to the way character leveling is handled. Not to mention they are just fun to play.
I havent tried Planescape: Torment, but from what i've seen of it its a "western" RPG like Baldurs Gate or Fallout 2 right? I keep trying to get into those, and I just cant. I always feel detached from the story and characters, partly because of the high emphasis on stats (I feel like my party is a bunch of numbers, instead of characters I actually care about).
Metal Gear: I think we mostly agree that Metal Gear Solid was brilliant, right? So even if you hate Sons of Liberty (which I totally dont get, it was fucking amazing in every aspect) thats still only one bad game in a series with near limitless potential. So shut the fuck up, at least until the final verdict is in on Snake Eater.
Mortal Kombat. I can ALMOST agree with this. The problem is, I think the series still has potential to be cool in 3d; every game after Ultimate MK 3 has been a major let-down, but I keep thinking maybe they'll get it right next time. If they would just get rid of most of these new characters (NOBODY fucking thinks Quan-Chi is cool, GET THE FUCK RID OF HIM) and bring back good'ol Shao Khan and Shang Tsung, and if they would realize the potential of full 3d fatalities (not the lame excuses for fatalities we got in MK 4 and ESPECIALLY in MK: DA) I think the series would be OK.
Also get rid of running, and the emphasis on combos. I liked fighting games better when it was all about knowing when and where to use the right special move, instead of memorizing strings of 20 button taps. Save that shit for Virtua Fighter, if ya dont mind.
