Tombstone

Another videogame influence here. Since the amazing looking Red Dead Revolver, due to hit in the UK on April 30th, I have decided to dip into the western genre. Before I was more or less exclusivly a sci fi/horror buff, but I have been expanding my film horizons.

So I saw Open Range. While it was fairly solid with a good cast and set pieces, it really really dragged.

Then I was tempted by the Tombstone director's cut on DVD. Glad to say I was very pleased by the end result. It is very long, and could have maybe done with a leaner cut, but it's never boring, and you get caught up in the beautiful cinematography and the
excellent cast.

I honestly had no clue Wyatt Earp really existed. But ya learn something new every day.....

I thought the movie was great.

I'm a kurt russell fan and think kilmer's doc holiday is priceless, but there is something amazingly beautiful about Open Range, it's not a spectacle film, and it's a damn fine western, the end was all that dragged for me, tombstone however is just LONG, and really needed a trim, with a shorter cut it would've been much better.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't dislike Open Range, but hardly anythign happens in it. There are a lot of scenes that could have been trimmed and I would have liked it a lot more. As it is I think it's a decent effort.

Whereas on Tombstone, I agree it could have been trimmer and leaner, but I liked it so much I don't really mind.

I haven't seen Open Range so I can't compare, but Tombstone is just a fun movie all around. There are so many great lines. In fact much of the dialouge in this movie has become a crucial part of me and my friend's vocabulary. Val Kilmer has the best dialouge though:

--------------------------
Doc Holliday: You must be Ringo. Look, Darling, Johnny Ringo. The Deadliest pistoleer since Wild Bill, they say. What do you Think, darling? Should I hate him?
Kate: You don't even know him.
Doc Holliday: Yes, but there's just something About him. Something around the eyes, I don't know, reminds me Of... me. No. I'm sure of it, I Hate him.
--------------------------

Doc Holliday: Why Kate, You're not wearing a bustle. How lewd.
--------------------------

Ike Clanton: What is that Holiday? Twelve hands in a row? Ain't nobody that lucky.
Doc Holliday: Why Ike, whatever do you mean? Maybe poker's just not your game. I know! Let's have a spelling contest.
----------------------------

Doc Holliday: It appears my hypocrisy knows no bounds.
----------------------------

Johnny Ringo: Isn't anyone here man enough to play for blood?
Doc Holliday: I'm your huckleberry.
------------------------------

Wyatt Earp: How are you?
Doc Holliday: I'm dying, how are you?
------------------------------

Doc Holliday: I have two guns, one for each of ya.
------------------------------

Doc Holliday: I have not yet begun to defile myself.
-----------------------------
Doc Holliday: It's true, you are a good woman. Then again, you may be the antichrist.
-----------------------------
Johnny Ringo: I want your blood. And I want your soul. And I want them both right now!
Doc Holliday: You're a daisy if you do.
-----------------------------
Doc Holliday: (To Johnny Ringo, after shooting him) You're no daisy!

Open Range has better scenery. In terms of story, it doesn't compare to Tombstone. Tombstone is a superhero film, and a good one.

Open Range is boring long drawn out movie with one of the best death scenes ever...I also loved every minute of Open Range and was kicking my self in the ass for not watching it in the theater...

Tombstone is not even on the same level as most other westerns as far as I am concerned. Like described above it is like a Superhero film with cowboys.

Cosmo, have you ever been to Tombstone?

Very cool stuff. I went when I was a kid, I need to go again.

The introduction of *some* realism (chinese immigration, the fact that the Earps wore suits, the short duration of the OK shootout, etc.) mixed with some mythology worked well. The movie left out quite a bit. There is much debate as to whether Johnny Ringo even was a gun fighter, or whether he just shot himself out of depression, for example. Also, the fact that the Cowboys were Democrats and the Earps GOP was a HUGE factor in their historical fued, but that didn't get brought up. But I think the film is better for leaving these elements out.

It has a very large cult following among the gunsel crowd and brought thousands to the Cowboy Action Shooting sports.
For the ignorant (ie me) could you tell me what you meant? What was and wasn't real if I may ask?

great film, totally glorifies the story into almost pure fantasy, not a realistic western, but a hell of a lot of fun, definitely a keeper... Open Range was okay, it just seemed a little too drab, he took the Texas drawl and turned it into molasses, Duvall even seemed a little watered down...
