"Son of a bitch must pay!" BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA

I just bought this film the other day, which I had never seen in it's entirety (I always catch the last 30 minutes on TV).

I watched it the first time, thought it was alright.

Watched it a second time, liked it better.

I can feel it creeping up my brainstem. This is one of those infectious films that seems kinda dumb the first time you see it, but it is just so funny and weird that it slowly becomes one of your favorites. Lo Pan kicks ass.

"Now this really pisses me off to no end!"

My favorite film. EVER.

Six words: Hell of the Upside Down Sinners.

One of the greatest films ever made
no horse shit, wang

Definitely one of my favorite films, way ahead of it's time, it took years for north america to get to the same page Carpenter was at in this film. It's one of those films that refuses to loose it's good stuff as the years go by, all anchored by the most entertaining performance Russell has ever given. Tarantino is getting justified acclaim for creating a great mixed bag of old asian and western influences- Carpenter did that almost 20 years ago.

I went through the same journey.
There is so much going on between the characters and within the dialogue it's impossible to fully appreciate this movie with just one or two viewings. It's as if Carpenter and Russell made it for nobody but themselves.

"A brave man likes the feel of nature on his face, Jack."

Victor Wong is missed.

I love this movie for many things, one being
the way Kurt Russell sports that bitchin' mullet, the
knee high boots and singlet (wife beater).

My favorite scene, where they're in the
elevator:

Jack Burton:
"I feel good, and I'm not scared at all. I just feel kind of... kind of invincible... Is it getting hot in here, or is it just me?"

Two thumbs up!!!

Just a good old-fashioned fun movie. I'm really lost for words when trying to explain what makes this such a great movie. I guess it's the type of movie that you either get or you don't. It's a "love or hate" thing. You either love the movie to death or you don't like it at all. No middle ground. Studios are too chicken shit to make films like these nowadays because there's too big of a gamble.

I just love shit like Burton carrying the knife in his teeth for no good reason. You KNOW he fucking saw some guy do that in a movie and since he thinks he's such hot shit he should do it too.

I always loved the part where Jack and co. have just taken the confidence potion and they arrive in the underground lair, Jack fires his gun and brings down a load of rubble, while everyone's fighting Jack's laid out on the floor.

"What the hell is Gracie Law doing here?"

Cinematic history in that one line.

What's great is when Margot is rambling and Burton just says

"Who the hell are you anyways?"

Said what we were all thinking.

I actually bought a DVD player when I found out about this special edition. First DVD I bought along with Killer Klowns From Outer Space and a couple other movies.

"If we're not back by dawn, call the President."

Brilliant movie, and, yes, light years ahead of its time.

Isn't that the way of most Carpenter's films...

Maybe Ghosts of Mars will find it's audience later. I know Escape from L.A. is starting to gain some fans.

Just a bloody great film. Everytime I watch it, the whole thing seems fresh and new to me. Russell doing his best John Wayne the whole time kills me as well.

As for it being racist, damn at least they used mainly Chinese American actors. I think if they tried to do this today they would get actors from Hong Kong. Which is a shame since there are plenty of Asian American actors who could do the parts just as well.

I usually love to watch this as a double feature with Buckaroo Bonzai. Two movies go great together. Now if they would just release Remo Williams in Widescreen, I would have agreat triple feature.

I do have to say, I would have loved to have read the original script where the film was a western just to see what changes Richter made.

I don't think it's fair to compare "Little China" to those two. I like both of them but to be honest, they aren't exactly the most creative and original films Carpenter has done. They are both rehashes of his earlier work where "China" was just a great concept that was too ahead of its time.

I agree, and I also think that the film (in its own weird little way) is sort of a parable about the complexity of Chinese culture; so much of the humor comes at the expense of Burton the clueless gweilo.

" We Chinese, look what we have to work with. There's Maoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, alchemism, sorcery, all mixed together. We take what we want, and we leave the rest. Much like your salad bar ... "

There are two kinds of people in this world.

Those that adore 'Big Trouble' like no other and those that do not get it. Stay away from the latter.

Same goes for anyone who doesn't like animals or children. Not to be trusted.

Sadly, I was a late bloomer in seeing the greatness of this. Hated it the first time I saw it. A few more times later it slowly dawned on me how brilliant this shit was!

I don't think there's a day that goes by when I don't yell "SON-OF-A-BITCH MUST PAY!"

Carpenter hasn't made a movie since that was this accessable.

And I agree, Escape from LA is one my favs. Like an old whore, it will get respect just for hanging around.

Here's another guy that liked Escape from LA and Snake's magical basketball skills.
"NO THREE POINT BULLSHIT!"

Oh and BTILC is pretty good too.
They should extend the scene where Old LoPan touches Kim Cattral's face and giggles

I remember when I was 8 and my folks rented this... absolutely hated it. Wouldn't watch it. Luckily, cable showed me the joy of Jack Burton...

"Well, aren't you gonna kiss her?"

"Nope."

Who else can face the main villain of the movie... with their mouth and teeth smeared with bright red lipstick?
