I love "The Blob."

I'm talkin' about the 1988 remake here. This film just does so many things right and it's because of so many elements in front and behind the camera. You got Shawnee Smith (the other Mrs. Rotten), Kevin Dillon, Jeffrey DeMunn, and Del Close all chewing the material with conviction. (Even Bill Moseley turns up as an unlucky scientist.) Then there's Frank Darabont serving as co-writer, Chuck Russell directing (probably his best effort), and Steve Johnson's gooey makeup!

I remember seeing this on HBO (the first time) and was floored by how cool it was. When fiends talk "remakes" around here the obvious choices always come up: The Fly, The Thing, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The Blob is damn worth to stand alongside this trio.

I'm so scared of The Blob, it's not even funny.

That's my Archille's Heel. In fact, I've never told anyone except my wife this. (You're all priviledged.)

Beware, The Blob! did me in as a kid, and from that day on I could never watch a Blob movie again...

I got through about 15 minutes of the remake and had to shut it off.

And the original stars my hero- Steve McQueen, and I can't even enjoy it.

Yes, I'm almost 30 years old, and I'm afraid of The Blob.

They killed a kid, sucked a man into a drain pipe and helped give me one of the best movie renting summers I ever had, along with a host of other now-classics I caught up with and digested in the summer of 1991.

I too love Darabont and Russell's The Blob with insane, gore-loving glee.

Chose this as one of my contributions to 100 Movies That Need More Love for Movie Insider/CHUD:

Quote:
Movies starring the less-famous siblings of big stars are always good for some overlooked fun, and this 80s remake of the Steve McQueen b-movie is a prime example. Starring Kevin “Brother of Matt” Dillon, with what appears to be a mongoose on his head, you’ll be surprised at just how much fun this movie is. Of course, horror remakes are all the rage now, but this one (directed by Chuck “The Mask” Russell) sticks with the formula that helped make The Thing more than a mere rehash. Insanely slimy and gruesome, with lots of melting flesh, it’s worth watching just to see the Blob explode out of Erika Eleniak’s tits, something previously only seen by visitors to www.erika-tit-burst.com.

The Defense: Delivering more than its fair share of sticky gore, while keeping the pulpy story zipping along, it’s amazing this isn’t held up as one of the better horror entries of the 80s.
Great movie. It also features Paul McCrane's second best on-screen death after RoboCop.

Yeah The Blob is one of my favourite 80's horror movies, right up there with Re-Animator. A great remake for sure, the original isn't too bad but pretty laughable and too serious.

Too bad the DVD for the remake is shite.

DudeAbides, I'm with ya. Two scenes that fucked my shit up: Seeing Meg's "date" get dragged along the floor screaming, fuckin' screaming, while inside the blob; and the projectionist hanging from the ceiling.

Yowza!

Is there a consensus here that everyone loves the Remake. how about the original. The original was almost pure comedy to me, especially the ending. THe remake... i could not play with my ghostbuster slime for awhile

yes, i love that movie, it does have a few ruff spots on here and there but it is so badass, the telephone booth scene rocks

in fact, just about every kill in that movie rocks

and for a horror movie from it's time, it has pretty good acting in it

This movie is a prime example of the untapped genre geek potential of Frank Darabont.

Just think what he'd do with The Mist ...
You should be proud to love the Russell/Darabont "The Blob". I know I am.

"The Mist"? Oh yeah!
damn, i gotta watch this movie again tonight

I echo most of what is said here. Its one of the good remakes. That scene with the date getting killed while he is being dragged, screaming and reaching out is pretty rough.
That scene alone gives me a healthy respect of the Blob. Good thing we know how to stop it, right, dude?

I first saw this with a friend when I was in middle school and living in Louisianna. He mentioned afterwards that he lived in the town where they filmed when it was being filmed. He also mentioned that the town does an annual event where they take a bunch of eggs and make this huge omelet. I always thought that was ironic. Although I never found out if that was after or before they filmed the movie there.

I've never seen the remake although I have picked it up several times in Best Buy buy damn does it look cheesy. I'll have to check it out. I always thought the original sucked.

NOTHING MOVES THE BLOB!!!!!!

I actually rented this today and saw it for the first time. I liked it quite a bit! Great gore, some real unexpected moments (nice jock gets it in the first 30 minutes!) and overall a fun time.

Not quite as resonant as "The Thing", but still a fun time, and a film that makes me miss monster movies.

fabfunk, i hope they put him in the next x-men movie

I haven't seen this in so long. All I remember is Kevin Dillon . . .and the poor schmuck that gets sucked into the drain pipe.

I actually prefer Son of Blob over all of them.

I had a chance to work on it but turned it down. Dick Smith had recommended me to Lyle Conway to work in his effects team, but I did not do it. I then got a call from my friend Tony Gardener to come out to LA and work in his crew on it. I wanted to do it, but I was getting ready to do prepro on "Blood Salvage" and I did not want to run into a scheduling conflict. Boy did I regret that descision later. I loved "The Blob" remake. It was fun and had some really cool effects. Hats off to Tony and his crew.

I love this movies, it's one of my favorites, the original sucks hard though.

I've said it before, but this is one of the more impressive remakes to come along over the years. This film had some of the most effective character development I've seen in a horror movie. First, the movie got you to care for most of the characters. Then it killed most of them. The budding relationship between the sheriff and the waitress, for instance, was a particularly nice touch -- especially when the she sees his dead body floating by as she's trying to call him.

I'll take the original over the remake any day. I was not impressed. It added nothing new to the story.

I'm pretty sure I'm going there anyway so might as well watch a shitty movie for eternity as long as it isn't Darkness Falls. It's been a long time since I've seen the original so if I see it now I might have a different outlook on it.

I picked up the remake this weekend at Best Buy. My 5 year old wants to watch it with me. What do you guys think? Too much gore?

But does a remake really need to add something new to the story?

The real horror in the remake wasn't the Blob itself but Kevin Dillon's hair. It's like some unholy hybrid of a mullet and 80's New Wave. It truly is the stuff of nightmares.

How is the sequel, compared to the original?
For fucks sake, there is almost as many threads about this movie as there that involve bun fights over Star Wars.
The Blob totally raped my childhood.

We evidently need a Blob forum.
