Last Temptation of Christ

I really think Martin Scorsese is a great film director. Raging Bull, Gangs of New York and Goodfellas are amazing films, so I decided to try this movie out.

I was very dissapointed.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with the subject matter, as it's clearly fictional. I was hoping for a real exploration of the concept "what if Christ gave into temptation?" But sadly, what I got was a film that was less about taking that intriguing idea seriously, and more of an obvious controvesy magnet that really had no purpose to exist rather than inflame people. The scene where Jesus is surrounded by two women a nd a bunch of children is so silly it borders on the realm of spoof. The idea never seems to go anywhere in depth, plus the whole events leading up to the crucificition are done with little passion which would have been essential in making us care about the rest of the film and the characters. It seems as if the only thought that crossed the filmmakers mind is "hey, I have an idea and it will get us a lot of controversy and therefore intrigue people to see it", and forgot about weaving an interesting story.

Just wondering what others thought of this?

I think it's based on a book for starters. And I think that it's a really amazing and heartfelt examination of Jesus as a man. And I think it does a better job of showing what Jesus sacrificed - what a life is - than Gibson's movie did, which just focused on temporary pain.

I think the premise is controversial, the execution really isn't. Also, this movie is infinitely better than "TPoTC" (I don't want to write it, plus it has become enough of a fad to deserve shortening).

the movie wasn't about christ giving into temptation, so I think you judged it unfairly based on a preconceived notion. the story examined the human side of christ, and the relation of the human to the divine. in keeping with this scorsese employed a style (most evident in the actors performances and gabriel's score) that was very unaffected and naturalistic. it may have seemed "off" at first, and too modern at times, but in the end I think it was a fitting tone.

as for a lack of passion... that sequence of jesus carrying the cross (with a rare perfect use of slo-mo) alone has more emotion in it than most movies have in their entire running time.

pay attention to the last moment of the movie... it's all in there... a perfect fusion of scorsese's style and message.

One of the most beautiful things about the movie is the idea that Christ's greatest temptation wasn't power or wealth, but simply to have a family and live as a normal man. And the most intense and powerful moments come right near the end. Judas confronts Jesus, Jesus rebukes the devil one last time and ultimately decides to not give into the temptation but instead die on the cross.

I think I need to watch this again. I didn't think it was ALL bad. I liked the scene with Lazarus , and the scene in the temple. Methinks it's time to give it another chance.

An incredibly thought-provoking and well made piece that got missed in all the controversy bullshit that surrounded it on its release.

The only people who can get offended bu that film either havent seen it, or missed its point completely.

Id say one of Dafoes best performances as well as one of my favourite film scores of all time.
