Finally caught up with "To Have And Have Not" the other day. Bogart and Becall's first pairing, adapted from Hemingway, cowritten by William Faulkner, directed by Howard Hawks,- sounds like it should be great, right?
What a letdown. This was a Casablanca rip-off devoid of charm. Maybe the actors just weren't up to the material, but the dialogue sounded unreal and downright strange. Non-sequitars, like the one in the subject line, and akward conversations abounded. And yet, the plot is your basic Hollywood cliche.
Something went wrong here, I just don't know what.
Anyone else seen this?
