"You ever been stung by a dead bee before?"

Finally caught up with "To Have And Have Not" the other day. Bogart and Becall's first pairing, adapted from Hemingway, cowritten by William Faulkner, directed by Howard Hawks,- sounds like it should be great, right?
What a letdown. This was a Casablanca rip-off devoid of charm. Maybe the actors just weren't up to the material, but the dialogue sounded unreal and downright strange. Non-sequitars, like the one in the subject line, and akward conversations abounded. And yet, the plot is your basic Hollywood cliche.
Something went wrong here, I just don't know what.
Anyone else seen this?

Yeah, but after finally seeing the film, I still don't know what the hell that's supposd to mean!
The script is either piss-poor, or working on an Altman level of genius that I'm completely missing.
