GODZILLA: Final Wars

I'm sure some of you have been hearing about Godzilla's 50th birthday bash that will be in theatres in Japan this winter. For those who don't, it's basically a Destroy All Monsters situation with kaiju attacking cities all over the world. And Godzilla will face his most powerful foe yet, Monster X. According to the kaiju news site Monster Zero, the official monster line-up will be:

Godzilla
Monster X
Mothra (larva form)
King Ghidora
Rodan
Angilas
Gigan
Manda
Gorosaurus
Kumunga
Kamakaris
Ebirah
Minya
King Seasar

I like that list for the most part because of the return of Angilas and Rodan and even Gorosaurus. Still, seeing those guys without Baragon and Varan disappoints me a bit. Maybe they'll have cameos or haven't been included yet.

This is cool.

I'm in denial that there won't be any more new Godzilla movies for a long while after this one, but mourning hasn't officially started yet.

I wonder what Monster X is?

A completely new one? Or another classic foe?

It would be awesome if it was King Kong...

I'm hoping for Hedorah!!!

I was thinking about him and how drastically he might be changed. Director Kitamura said that all the kaiju in this movie will be the product of nuclear testing. Therefore, all the kaiju will have real-life counterparts (or creatures that come close). This makes me wonder about Seesar. Will he just be a mutated lion or dog? I guess we have to wait to found out...
Holy shit! Gorosaurus and his kangaroo kicking powers (displayed in Destroy All Monsters) are coming back?!
I'm stoked for this "final" Godzilla flick as well. From what I understand, this "Monster X" will be a completely new monster and according to the director I believe, who was the guy who directed "Versus" BTW, will be a very different kaiju design.

If you're into videogaming, you can get you kaiju fix in September when "Godzilla: Save the Earth" shows up for the Xbox and Playstation 2.

Am I confused? I thought King Seesar was a giant lobster.

That was Ebirah.

The end of an era. And this is one "end" that I actually believe. I didn't even believe that the original Godzilla's death a few years back would actually end the series. I believe this one because it's based on money, and Godzilla's not pulling it in like he used to. I can accept Godzilla's final walk into the sea. I'd just like to see all of the other films get the same respectful treatment that the latest movies have gotten on DVD (choice of Japanese or English soundtracks with optional subtitles). I just got Godzilla against Mechagodzilla today, and I've never seen it. A Godzilla movie that I haven't seen is such a wonderful rarity. Hopefully my wife won't mind watching it tonight during dinner.
It may be the last Godzilla movie for awhile but he'll be back sooner than we think. Godzilla is cash cow just like Star Trek and lord knows we'll never see an extended period of time without any Trek.
I hope you're right.

A world without Godzilla hardly bears thinking about.
Godzilla isn't raking in the cash anymore because they haven't been making good movies. I'm sorry to say but the last good Godzilla movie was Godzilla 2000. I haven't liked anything since and all they are doing is just rehashing the same monsters over and over again with terrible stories and acting.

Hail The gamera Trilogy

Godzilla GMK begs to differ. Great kaiju movie.
toho plans to rest godzilla until 2010 at the earliest.

he *will* be back, just not anytime soon.

though toho hasn't said anything specific about keeping
the big g quiet for american studios(the hollywood rights have
reverted back to toho from sony).

if jackson's "king kong" is successful(and you'd have to think "yes" at this point) i can possibly see another big studio getting the godzilla rights again and doing a proper big budget godzilla movie here(slim chances i know but we can wish).

i recommend http://www.clubtokyo.org/monsterzero for all your kaiju needs! it's the place to go for breaking godzilla, gamera, ultraman, japanese sci-fi fantasy movie/tv show news.

It certainly is. I've been a member there for 2 years.

GMK had its moments but the story was terrible and I fucking HATE mothra. Baragons beat down was classic though.

And yes G2000 was good. I saw it on the big screen.

Here's some awesome news. Toho updated their Final Wars site with illustrations of the kaiju that will appear. Well, just Godzilla and Gigan. The rest are just silhouettes, but DAMN, they're fucking awesome! They all have a retro feel to them, even Minya (which is starting to trouble me). I sure hope the actual suits look as good as their shadows.

Damn, that pic of Godzilla is fuckin' smooth.

And in case anyone missed it, check out Foy's massive story about G:FW right here. Good stuff.

Looks like I'm going to have to update that story in the next 24 hours. I'm stunned King Ghidorah got the boot and Hedorah (the Smog Monster who Toho's management has said to loathe for decades) is in!

That image of the new Gigan makes me weep tears of joy. I've been saying for years they should bring back Gigan and make him a bad ass kaiju terminator.

WTF????

"From what I've been able to read of the text so far, the first thing that jumped out at me was mention of the legendary battleship Atragon as one of humanity's weapons. Also there are several mentions of Planet X and its inhabitants in the story section! Brett Homenick from the MessagefromCyberspace newsgroup was right on. Just one more detail from what he let out a few weeks back is waiting to be confirmed, and that's the appearance of the American Godzilla..."

Even though King Ghidorah's and Gorosaurus' silhouettes are missing, doesn't mean they're axed. Toho may update later or hold off on showing them for a while.

Spoiler Stuff from Monster Zero

A Chinese news article reveals what is purported to be a MAJOR SPOILER for Godzilla Final Wars. If you don't want to know then don't read!

EIJING, May 1 (Xinhuanet) -- Godzilla is finally going to die - honest. And it's going to happen in Shanghai.

Japan's Toho Pictures is already filming the final Godzilla flick for the legendary monster's 50th anniversary on the big screen.

In "Godzilla: Final Wars," the fictitious green monster that wreaked chaos around the world will lose his final battle to a fire dragon and die by the Oriental Pearl TV Tower in Pudong.

The filming of local scenes will last about four days in the city's Chedun film studio.

Director Ryuhei Kitamura and some of the cast are scheduled to be in the city at the end of this month to complete the shots.

The film's plot could be described, kindly, as uncomplicated. Godzilla's child is killed accidentally by humans, which drives the monster crazy. The reptile-like creature then goes on a massive rampage around the world, according to a local film import company that will assist in the shooting of the local parts.

After several rounds of epic encounters, Godzilla faces the fire dragon. The final battle is set to happen on the Bund.

Godzilla's fury will not be contained to Shanghai however. He will also smash, bash and crash his way through the United States, France, Australia and other countries.

Nearly 300 extras will be hired locally for the final scenes.

Cast shots will be completed mainly inside the studio while computer technology will be used to synchronize outdoor filming of the Bund and the Pearl Tower.

Representative buildings and scenic spots will be shot on location. Kitamura has also confirmed that the Eiffel Tower in France will be one of the locations for a separate scene.

The movie is now being filmed by several teams at the same time in different countries. The Japanese premiere is scheduled for December 11.

The local film import company's management said they are interested in introducing the movie to the city's cinemas.

Toho Pictures has produced 22 movies starring Godzilla since 1954. Hollywood also paid the company to produce its version in 1998.

Kitamura, 35, is a rising director famous for glamorous fighting scenes in cult films.

The young director has won world acclaim for his 2003 production, "Azumi," a comic book movie, which is considered the Asian counterpart of American director Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" films.

Okay, so it's not the complete trailer, but it's still pretty damn awesome to see the first footage from the movie. Go to Monster Zero to see it. I love that shot of "Zilla" getting whacked by Goji's tail and flying toward the camera.

I wasn't aware that the Ambiguously Gay Duo would be making a cameo in this movie...
