Anyone worked on a horror movie?

Thread Starter
As I am (in about a month) going to be working as a grip on a straight to dvd horror movie titled: Art is Dead (tentative). You'll be able to rent it at Blockbuster. I was wondering if any of you have done similar jobs, how was it? How did you like being on set on a horror movie?

I am working as a grip on a feature right now, but it isn't a horror flick. I am a little dissapointed with how it's going. Simply because of the fact that some of the people that I am working with are assholes. But I hope that when I work on this horror movie next month, it'll sway my opinions.

So yeah, can anyone relate?

I haven't, but I probably will this summer. On a horror movie. The Meister already said yes, I just need to see what I'll be doing (but even serving coffee is fine by me) and if I can afford the trip to L.A
It'd be awesome.

I make my own horror movies...

But one day I shall work at a studio with proper equipment and scripts and everything.

I was an extra in the concert flashback scene in Bubba Ho-Tep. Haven't even seen the movie yet, so I don't know if I even show up on screen.

It was a wild and crazy night in Downey, CA, freezing my ass off (it was unnaturally cold for an April evening) and pretending Elvis was on stage.

Of course, it wasn't Elvis, it was Bruce Campbell, who kept us all in stitches all night long.

Past that, no clue, sorry.

I was the 2nd 2nd A.D. on DEAD END, which gets a lot of love here at the Corner, although some of us were rather dubious how it would turn out while were making it. Nice to know that it's so well received - we all worked damned hard on it.

And I worked as a PA on MOMENTUM, which was a SCANNERS ripoff that was sold as a SciFi original movie -- that was a pretty fun shoot, and I got to see just how truly skeletal Teri Hatcher is.

Also, I was a featured extra in JURASSIC PARK: THE LOST WORLD. When the T-Rex is storming through downtown San Diego (which was in reality downtown Burbank) I was one of the people who ran screaming from it. I was actually dead center in the group, and it was surreal to see myself, big as life, there on the screen when I finally caught the movie.

I'm think Ryan Rotten worked on some film last year.

Wasn't it Jeepers Creepers II?

Ryan's very gifted when it comes to finding cool jobs I think...

I remember there was a journal of the events, pictures and everything, it was really cool...I forget his posistion though...

If I recall, Ryan was Salva's assistant on JC II.

I have done work as a make up effects artist on over 35 films. Most are action flicks but a few were horror including: "Pet Sematary 2", "In Dreams","The Stand", "Eight Legged Freaks", "Blood Salvage", "Sleepaway Camp 2 & 3", and a bunch that I've never seen and don't even know what the titles ended up being. I also wrote and directed "Don't Worry It's Only Your Imagination", a 60 minute horror short. I also do a lot of monster designs and graphics for the Netherworld Haunted Attraction.

Yep, Ryan was Salva's assistant, can be seen briefly on the behind the scenes here and there, too.

Here's the journal you speak of: Jeeper's Journal

Proving again that you, Splat, are the reigning king here. You know, I'd LOVE to see "Don't Worry..." one of these days (crosses fingers for The Nightmare Collection."

You working on anything interesting at the moment, man?

I'm one of those annoying 'breaking into the biz' types. I'm a writer/director with one feature under my belt and a couple of shorts plus a buttload (no pun intended) of porn. I work as a graphic designer, voice over artist, video editor, writer, and have my own publishing company. What it takes, I do. I've got some friends that work in the horror biz and some love it, some are bitter burned out bastards. If you want to do it, do it.

They were my first real movie jobs that allowed me to quit my job at the mall's art store. That was really exciting for me. It was great to actually be working on a horror film and to be getting paid good money for it. As for the experience itself, like any movie, I have good and bad memories of it. It was 2 very quick and hard shoots. We did them back to back in a total of 6 weeks with 3 days between the shows. The cast and and most of the crew were great to deal with. Many of the crew members and I woked together on the same films for many years. It has become rather romanticised for me over the past 17 years.

I'm working on a nervous breakdown. Nothing's really happening. Most stuff seems to be still going over seas and that is making it really hard for the american crews. My dad is going in for open heart surgery today and I really don't feel good about being too far away from my folks right now. I really want to try to do my next personal project, but there are too many distractions, at the moment and I really need to get a job as soon as possible. I am doing some more stuff for Netherworld, which is always fun.

My buddy and I are working on making our own feature in the Pittsburhg area this summer. We are putting the pieces together as we speak.

Bill, sorry to hear about your dad. I'll say a prayer for him. I hope everything goes okay.

About a month or two ago I wrote about working as a PA on a film called the Stranger Within directed by Tom Holland. I don't have a lot of good things to say about the experience. Look it up for details if you so desire.

I don't think the type of film you work on will matter much. IMO the problem is the incredible stress people are under when shooting a film. Time is money and that leads to a lot of pressure that trickles from the top down. Another factor is that filmmakers are artists and I don't find artists to be particular good managers and, worse, they usually have ego's so large as to be unable to admit this.

At the end of the day being on that workhorse side of film is just another job. You either end up working with people you like and being treated with respect or you end up working with a bunch of jerks and being treated like a disposable idiot (what a good title that would be; The Disposable Idiot, I think that should be on my tombstone).

If you were to take my advice and I don't encourage you to, I would try working in the production and office side of things (if indeed you are looking for experience to become a filmaker on your own-I realize you didn't say you were). Learning to manage money and people will be more valuable than holding a metal rod.

I was an extra in Alex Winter's "Freaked" as well as an extra in Clive Barker's "Lord of Illusions". And I wrote a script called "The Haunting Grounds" that Reggie Bannister is directing and is in pre-production right now. Once filming starts I'm sure I'll be on set almost every day doing all kinds of stuff. I also made sure that I got a small cameo in the flick. I told him I wanted to be a guy selling churros at a carnival. -Clark

Thanks, everything went well. It ended up being 5 bypasses, but he came through like a champ.
