i've been reading a moderate amount of hype on the flick Satan's Little Helper and it got me curious on revisiting a couple of Lieberman's 70's horror flicks (Squirm, Blue Sunshine). i really dug Blue Sunshine, loved it's kitchy 70's aura (especially the disco rampage). but Squirm seemed kinda lame, maybe it's because the first time i saw it was on MST 3000...

...anyways, what's the general concensus around here on his films?

I think I've seen all of Jeff Lieberman's horror movies: "Squirm," "Blue Sunshine," and "Just Before Dawn." I, too, first saw "Squirm" on "MST3K." I didn't really form an opinion on it because of the distraction of the commentary. I later saw it at an all-night horror movie marathon, however, and enjoyed it for its camp value. And it does feature a pretty cool effect. Too bad the budget didn't allow for more of the same type of effect in the scene on that lake.

I thought "Blue Sunhine" was interesting but not that strong of a movie. I bought the DVD and liked his anti-drug short movie "The Ringer" better.

And I really like "Just Before Dawn." It has good atmosphere. Compared to "Friday the 13th," I wonder why Sean S. Cunningham's slasher spawned so many sequels and Lieberman's didn't, anyway. I really hope the rigths to the movie are cleared up pretty soon and the movie's released on DVD--and given the royal treatment. A commentary would be nice.

I'm really looking forward to seeing "Satan's Little Helper." That and Frank Henenlotter's movie for Fangoria, "Sick in the Head."

FYI, the first review (that I've seen anyway) for Satan's Little Helper is up on Fango, courtesy of Mike Gingold. Check it out

Haven't heard anything at Fangoria in a while. I looked at an old news piece at Fangoria and found this, however:

"Shooting will take place in Los Angeles, with Henenlotter helming a script he wrote with underground rapper R.A. (The Rugged Man) Thorburn. SICK IN THE HEAD’s extreme creature FX will be handled by Henenlotter film vet Gabe Bartalos, who recently made his directorial debut on the upcoming SKINNED DEEP."

Story

I hope Fangoria stays on track.

Lieberman rules. and Squirm was far too good a horror film to be deserving of Mystery Science Theater treatment.

Just Before Dawn needs a good DVD too.

... i agree, although i've never seen the film, actually. i have heard a lot of good things about it, and buying these forgotten films on dvd is the only way i get to see them, even though i hate blind buying .

...Just Before Dawn-that did get a theatrical run, anybody know?
