The BFI released a batch of cool horror stuff a few years back - a lot of MR James adaptations, some of the great BBC Christmas ghost stories.

And Ghostwatch!

Have Ghostwatch and it is really really good as long as you can keep it in your head of what the circumstances around the original showing of this were...

Also have a Warning to the Curious-a bit slow but vbery effective little ghost story...

Also (thanks to a fellow chewer) have the Woman in Black- Only have been able to make it through half of the dvd- The few times I have tried to sit down and watch it - I got distracted...

Been eyeing the Stone Tape for about a year now...Cannot push myself over to buying it..Anyone want to help me make the jump?

Someone here also hooked me up with The Woman In Black. I sat down and watched it one rainy afternoon and despite its slow pace, I thought it was brilliant. Its a very dark, gloomy movie. It is very well acted and shot. Perhaps my favorite ghost story. Highly recommended, but very hard to find.

Woman in Black is definately very cool, with at least one or two genuinely spine tingling moments.

The Stone Tape I also really dug (huge Nigel Kneale fane so was thrilled to be able to get this and WIB last year.) It's definately an interesting take on a ghost story and the whole "ghost investigators" thing, with some cool takes on what ghosts are and how they exist, etc.

And Ghostwatch, well, that was my favorite find of last year and the reason (besides a Brazilian R2 set of the whole Twin Peaks series--which was basically just dubs of the vhs, but oh well) that I got a region free dvd player. Ghostwatch was just amazing and creeped the shit out of me. Even when you know what it's gimmick is, etc, if you're in the right frame of mind late at night, it'll sneak up on you and scare the shit out of you! Very well done.

Holy fucking shit Ghostwatch.

I saw this when it first came on back in '92. I was 11 years old and it scared the living fuck out of me. Even the disclaimer that came on at around three in the morning telling people it wasn't real (apparently people phoned up the BBC to report their own hauntings) didn't help. My brother and I stayed up all night too scared to turn out the light.

Thanks for helping me remember that night. Of course I have to go out and buy it now, just so I can be disappointed at how unscary it actually is.

Please make it be unscary.

WOMAN IN BLACK is one of my favorite ghost/haunted house films of all-time ... Eerie, brilliant, with a suitable ending ... Highly recommeded . . .

These are all amazing movies. They were so creepy for their times! And they STILL hold up now!

Woman in Black has that one really really really big scare.

Those of you who have seen it know what I mean.

...in the bed...

Damn right!

I loved A Warning to the Curious as well.

Warning to the curious was one of several BBC Ghost stories for Christmas that were originally broadcast in the 70s, many of them based on classic MR James stuff. they're flawless ghost stories.

sadly not all of them have been released on DVD (yet)
