Juon in theaters

I'm so glad I didn't give in and buy this on DVD already! I haven't seen the original films either but I'm thinking of just going in cold, figure its better that way.

Any recommendations? Should I see the first two before this or after?

Well, in my opinion, you should watch the theatrical version first if you can see it on a big screen. Then watch the two tv versions. I haven't yet seen The Grudge 2 so I don't know about that.

If you watch the tv versions first, I think that the theatrical version will be a bit of a let down. It's not that it's bad, but the first tv movie was simply better. Most of the second tv movie is just flashback to the first so you won't be missing much if you skip that one altogether.

I only just saw this for the first time a few weeks ago (it's going theatrical in the UK in July) and it creeped me the hell out. It's weird, because the movie breaks the first law of a scary movie - you see everything, repeatedly in fact. But instead of becoming numb to it, it actually gets scarier.

Just some great, old fashioned spine-shivering moments - and a fantastic eye for imagery that's just off-balance enough to leave you with a lingering uneasy feeling.

Def watch the theatrical version before the tv version...

It kind of gives you the main gist of the story and I think that the TV versions explain things ALOT more...as well as the best scares are in the TV version (school classrom scene comes to mind first...)

I loved them all and I get that chilled feeling from the sound they make...My girlfriend laughs at it and thinks it is silly...

Guess I am going to have to break up with her soon...

I ordered Ju-On: The Grudge off of ebay and I'm glad I only paid a few bucks for it. I didn't care for it at all. I can appreciate what (I think) they were trying to do with it but the end result completely underwhelmed me. I don't know, was I missing something?

Yeah, you're probably missing what a lot of people missed - plot, character development etc.

I don't mean that as a negative criticism of either the movie or the people who expect these things but Juon forgoes traditional storytelling methods in order to build a creepy atmosphere. As a horror fan, I respect that. If a supposedly scary movie doesn't scare, to me, it has failed even if the story and characters are fantastic. Juon is an exercise in creeps and atmosphere and delivers just that.

But the tv version delivers it with more style...
