Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas, The Hype Begins

Edit - Forget what I mentioned below, go here!

http://www.rockstargames.com/sanandreas/

We might not get to see so much as a single screen shot of the next Grand Theft Auto at this year's E3, but we should see that and more in the next issue of Game Informer.

http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Sto...1641.06721.htm

"Rockstar has really raised the bar on the franchise with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, said Matt Helgeson, senior associate editor at Game Informer. "It is one of the most ambitious titles we've seen to date in it's amazing scope, graphics and environments - gamers are going to find out the facts of this game are even more amazing than the hype and speculation."

Jesus, game informer must be throwing insane amounts of cash at all these developers in the past few months to get all these exclusives. I wonder where they are getting their money from, 1.4 million subscribers isnt that big of a number, i believe EGM gets 3-4 million if im not mistaken.
So much for exclusive

All I gotta say if they have some early 90's west coast rap on that soundtrack, I am so there. And I cant believe I'm saying that, also the fact that I'm actually hyped for this game, it goes against everything I stand for. They finally hit a fanboy spot for me. I wanna cap people to Warren G's "Regulate". I'm getting flashbacks to the movie Friday.

That looks very nice. Bicycles!

Ehhhhh... The less mexican and rap music the better. I fucking hate that music. A single station would be ok as a joke, beyond that, it's just goddamn annoying.

First off, GTA3 DID only have a single rap station. So did VC, IIRC.

Second, not everyone in the world likes the same things as you do. I hate classic rock, but I'm not bitching because GTA included a station devoted to it.

They tried to *gasp* actually make a realistic variety of radio stations that people can pick and choose what to listen to. No rap or Mexican stations in a game based in California? You REALLY think that would happen?

Holy shit, it's the Watts Towers. I thought this was gonna be in San Francisco knockoff.

Here's some tidbits from the story.

"Five years ago Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas.. .a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs and corruption; where film stars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gang bangers.

Now, it's the early 90s. Carl's got to go home. His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.

On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets."

e.c, I want the same variety of music in this game as the last two, and I just hope it doesn't have a larger amount of rap because of the setting.
Hopefully, the LAST LAST GTA using that horrible graphics engine. I know it'll be a load of fun, but I'm sick of having the framerate drop to under 10 every time a car blows up.
This sounds suspiciously like I'll be playing as a good guy, not sure if I dig that.
Don't forget, they also have to feature the return of Maurice Chavez. It will be a crime if they don't.
I wonder if they've got a voice for the main guy yet. Hmmm...Mekhi Phifer...Derek Luke...James Earl Jones...
...Ice Cube?

Oh c'mon, you can at least attempt to be a virtual good guy, just this once.

You could always push an old lady down some stairs afterwards if it'll make you feel better...
If there are earthquakes that can change the landscape of the game area, I'd like to push people down into those big cracks that open up in the streets. Hearing them scream on the way down would be a lot of fun!

Yeah, that's him. I would like him to be the main character's voice. Then you could walk up on people riding bikes, knock the living shit out of 'em and say "That's my bike, punk!"

San Andreas is the state. Does this mean a bigger map, or just a bunch of California landmarks/cityscapes thrown into one city?

I wouldn't mind. At worst (for the non-rap fans) they'll make two stations, one for west coast gangsta rap, which was REAL prolific and extra-violent in the early 90s, and another for east coast hip hop (but that's just my personal hope that ain't gonna happen).

My guess is that it's gonna be one rap station dominated by gangsta rap like Dr Dre, Snoop, Eazy-E, Ice Cube, BONE, MC Eiht, and 2Pac.
I hope Tupac's "Hit Em Up" and "All About U" land on the soundtrack. That would be neato.
God DAMN. Gonna be fucking amazing.

Boyz N The Hood, Juice, Menace II Society. PERFECT fodder for a game.
Just please God don't let it be suburban white boyz idea of the 'hood.

You know, that first screenshot could hypothetically be a multiplayer screenshot.

This is the cover story of the new issue of GAME INFORMER, by the way.

GTA is the one series that has never done anything to shake my faith. They consistently top themselves. This game is probably the closest thing to a sure thing known right now.
The Rockstar website says, "Preorder now to avoid disappointment.", but frankly, I seriously doubt that my local Best Buy would understock this one. Up to this point they've consistently had copies (and full displays, even) of games that were sold out everywhere else.
still wish it took place in the 70's either san fran or in LA where the porn industry boomed.. woulda been cool wit the 70's music, disco scene and have 2 characters, a cop and a bad guy so u have 2 whole diffrent storylines.. now that would be one cool game this just kinda feels like GTA3 in a way, west coast style

Taken from Gamesradar.com:
So. Now we know. San Andreas is NOT Los Angeles, it's a whole state. Los Santos, on the other hand is, to all intents and purposes, LA. The game's two other cities, San Fierro and Las Venturra are based on San Francisco and Las Vegas respectively. There'll be countryside between the three main areas, each of which is roughly the same size as the whole of Vice City. Big, in other words. Overall, the game will be an incredible four to six times the size of its predecessor.
Main character Carl Johnson is going to have his work cut out. Returning to his old haunts after five years in the Liberty City slammer, and blamed by his older brother Sweet for younger bro' Brian's accidental death, he'll be making his way through an early 90's streetscape besieged by rival gangs.

The most significant gameplay changes are a new stamina meter, meaning you need to eat, and massively improved building interiors. You'll be able to commit burglary now, or run a casino in Las Venturra. If you're feeling less ambitious you can just gamble away your ill-gotten gains on the tables in LV.

Brilliantly, improved AI means you can recruit a gang, the Orange Grove Families, and drag members along on missions. Up to four people can complete a drive-by mission, for instance.
It's a GTA game - it's not going to suck. And I hope this one hits the Xbox soon after the PS2 version.
It's a great time to be a gamer. They're is going to sell a shitload of copies.
wish they had a create your own GTA one of these years where u can base it off of your hometown GTA: Tucson would make sense this place is full of mexican gangsters and bad drivers

When...so I can start squirelling money from the wife?
Seriously, I'm not a big tech expert so it seems reasonable to ask...how the hell can the Playstation 2 handle this? In terms of technology, it's gotta be getting over the hill by now... right? I'm guessing at least two discs.
It's just more content, which doesn't tax the system much more (assuming they've built the engine properly). It's conceivable this will still all fit on one DVD. I have no idea how large (in terms of bytes) the original games were.

I didn't get the sense from the preview that there was multiplayer. It wasn't clear, but the passage referring to "four people can complete a drive-by" was in a paragraph talking about A.I. So I'm guessing that the other three people will be computer-controlled.

Here's the new article.

http://www.gtagaming.com/sanandreas/gameinformer

I thought this was amusing. So now you can be a fat bastard.

"In fact, you'll see the results of your character's lifestyle right before your eyes. We've mentioned the fact that there are now numerous restaurants throughout San Andreas - and they are not a mere novelty. Adding a new dimension of realism, Carl will now have to eat in order to maintain his physical state - which is also reflected in a Stamina meter, something Rockstar North experimented with in Manhunt. And, as the saying goes, you are what you eat. Consuming fast food and avoiding exercise will actually make Carl gain weight, which affects everything from your speed to the character's physics-to humorous effect.
"Playing a mission when you're a fat bastard and everyone calling you a 'fat bastard' in the game world is an amazing experience," said Houser. Unfortunately, becoming overweight will frequently make missions either more difficult or outright impossible, forcing you to seek another very real-world solution to your problem.
"So, you eat your donuts, you get fat, you gain weight, you reduce your stamina and speed - how do you sort that out?" questions Houser. "You go to the gym, you work out, you gain muscle, and you gain a lot more strength, a lot more speed. The [character] model actually changes and he looks amazing."
this sounds so cool.. 3 big cities and lots of countryside to drive around in i hope they make the cities look really diffrent, cuz i cant imagine mexican gangstas in san francisco or las vegas really
post #44 of 340
Wow. Assuming this all ends up in the final game, I take back everything I said about them running the franchise into the ground.

Some other interesting bits:

Quote:
I'm at IGN's E3 booth right now, holding a copy of the new Game Informer that has a 10 page cover story on GTA:SA.

I'm only going to do some quick highlights though, but what a set of highlights its going to be!

San Andreas isn't a city. Its a state made up of three different city. Each one of those cities is about the size of GTA:VC. Los Santos (LA), San Fierro (San Francisco), Las Venturra (Las Vegas). Theres also a lot of rural country area inbetween the cities, which makes this game feel like a living world.

You play as Carl Johnson, whos an African American.

There are actual mountains in the game, and yes you can drive up/around them.

You can ride bikes and you'll have to repeatedly press the X button to keep going.

Big graphical leap. Better lighting and real-time reflections on cars, windows and mirrors.

You can build and run a Casino in Las Venturra.

Game takes place in the early 1990's.

The game's storyline is going to have a much stronger focus, even when not playing in missions. Its also going to be a bit more dramatic and serious than the previous two storys.

You can now rob homes, but you have to plan it out properly or you'll die.

You can have a group of people with you, helping you perform drive-bys (a four-man drive-by is now possible).

Swimming IS finally included!

Theres a bunch of new skills to learn that you earn over time, some even from side-quests and minigames.

You have to eat to keep proper stanima, but if you eat too much and don't exercise enough, you'll become fat, run slow, and it will make some missions impossible to complete. You have to go to the gym and work off your fat (you'll also be called a "fat bastard" by other people in the game).

Improved targeting system, but Rockstar won't say whats been changed, they said that you should think of Manhunt's gunplay.

Improved hand-to-hand combat.

Rag-doll physics when you shoot people.
Aout time that they included swimming.
will they have mini planes for like flying from city to city? that would make sense
post #47 of 340
I have enough trouble staying away from fast food and keeping my weight down in real life, now I have to worry about it in a fuckin' game?!
Maybe they'll throw in that your character can catch an STD from messing around with the hookers in the game! Carl can die from AIDS prematurely and the game ends.
I hope you can get a red convertible, and go somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, where the drugs begin to take hold.
