Stern to expand the NBDL? About time!

Stern: Expand NBDL to help young NBAers

Basically he wants to expand it from 7 teams to 15 teams and also employ a semi-minor league system by letting teams allocate one player to the NBDL teams. It's a start, but I think it should be taken farther. A full minor league system could do a lot of good for the NBA. It'd give an outlet for teams to get some real quality playing time for young players or players recovering from injury.

I'd love to see a system where they could assign more than one player.

Someone else has to think this is a good idea..

I do, but I really wish he would truly dig in and make a real minor league farm system. Why not?

I have no idea. You'd think David Stern would be all for a better product, but for some reason... he's beholden to the NCAA.

Perhaps I just don't see the obvious connection between the NCAA and Stern, but a professional league for 18 year olds, where the players can spend more than 20 hours per week developing their skills-like their European bretheren-seems like the best possible solution for all involved.

I like the idea of a minor league in the NBA only for the reason that it will give college players who jumped early a second chance or less of a reason to jump early.

If teams start designating players from their draft picks to the minor leagues to get some more experience, I think the big name college stars would opt on staying in their big name programs and getting national notoriety for another few years. And then when they do come out to the pros, they will actually be better players.

See, I don't get that... College atheletes aren't allowed to work on their game for more than 20 hours per week. How does that help players get better?

European leagues don't even touch our college graduates, they consider them untrainable by that age, too stained by a collegiate system that doesn't teach them the fundamentals necessary to excel at their brand of ball.

Besides the NCAA not liking it, is there any reason why the Nba can't have the same kind of farm system that MLB has?

Unlike Baseball which I think NEEDS a minor league system to survive the NBA doesn't need a full on A, AA, AAA tiered system. Although I think a 1 team per team minor league system would serve everyone better. A place to rehab players, a place to get young players more in-game time, a place to work on project players, etc. Because now in the NBA if you don't succeed you can be out of the league just like that, so many players come out of college play 1 to 2 years on the bench and then are gone for the next college bench holder. There are legitimate players who just never get a chance to develop their game or get stuck behind starters with not enough game time to impress.
