Greatest Fluke Performances by bad actors

Thread Starter
That is to say what individual performance is the farthest above the actor’s remaining body of work? What bad actor (or actress) delivered a money performance that would incline a person to think an alien with actual acting skill inhabited that actor’s body for the duration of filming?

A notable example of this is Kim Basinger in LA Confidential. Kim Basinger, who is normally the consensus of a pretty bad actress, and a barely decent actress on her best day, was great in LA Confidential, holding her own against some great actors (Crowe and Pearce) bringing their “A” game in a great film. Truly a memorable fluke performance.

But in my estimation, the ultimate example of this is Stephen FREAKING BALDWIN in The Usual Suspects. This waste of space, who his own brother Billy must see at family reunions and scoff derisively and say “Hey Stevie, good to see ya, nice actin’ chops you got workin’ *sarcastic laughter*” somehow gets cast in one of the great movies of the 1990’s, and he absolutely BRINGS IT. He shares the screen with a motivated Byrne, Spacey, Postlethwaite and an emerging Del Toro, and ends up nailing every scene in sight. He is utterly fantastic, for once in his worthless life, and for my money OWNS the best scene in the film (“There’s nothing that can’t be done”)

This performance, coupled with some career choices that could be described as “questionable” at best (“Bio Dome” springs most immediately to mind), make me wonder, but for some good career advice (and for the love of GOD staying away from Paula Shore), what might have been.

Chewers? Any other great performances from actors we all dismiss?

Credit where credit is due, Keanu made a fantastic Ted "Theodore" Logan.

Whoopi Goldberg in "The Color Purple" and maybe "Ghost". Adam Sandler in "Punch Drunk Love" although his might be a case of poor movie choices.

Mark Wahlberg in Boogie Nights.

Charlize Theron in Monster, sorry she's bad everywhere else, but gave it her all here.

Michael Madsen in 'Reservoir Dogs'
Mike Myers in '54'
George Carlin in 'Jersey Girl'
Matt Damon in 'Good Will Hunting'
Jim Carrey in 'Man On The Moon'

Helena Bonham Carter in Fight Club. Marla is one of my favorite onscreen characters but Carter is fucking awful in everything else I've seen her in.

Marla

I agree with the Helena Bonham Carter thing
I hate her with a passion. Tim Burton more or less stopped being a good film maker at the same time he dumped Lisa Marie for that shrew, but she IS Marla. I just read the book and was amazed at how complete her interpretation of that character was.

Carradine as Bill. Has anyone actually seen Kung Fu?
Jesus Wept.

George Hamilton in Evel Knieval

Ricardo Maltobhan in Star Trek 2

David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth

I wouldn't consider the above three performances great, but they are good, and very uncharacteristic of these actors.

Natalie Portman in Leon The Professional. Stallone in Copland

I'm seconding Keanu Reeves in "The Matrix Trilogy". I find him unwatchable in almost everything else, mainly because he doesn't seem like a real human being. Yet this otherworldly quality actually helped, making him more God-like and mystical. The more I hear about better actors like Ewan McGregor ir Brad Pitt having turned it down, the more pleased I am.

And I wholeheartedly agree with the Stephen Baldwin assessment.

Some more:

Brandon Lee in The Crow. He was a B level action star at best, but like Keanu his weirdness sort of added to the role. His quoting of Hemingway to Jon Polito is still very cool.

Mark Wahlberg in Three Kings. Before this he was sort of an emerging actor, and in this one he really nailed it. Nothing too complicated, but he gets all of the movie's messages across without being preachy and makes a pretty compelling character. Especially the interrogation scenes. Since then he's been in a bunch of big movies providing absolutely nothing interesting. He's a good looking guy who can play the boring underwritten male leads in boring underwritten movies. "Three Kings" is starting to look like a fluke.

Tom Arnold in True Lies. The one time his schtick was, and remains, actually funny.

Mike Madsen was awesome in Thelma and Luise and in Heat. I'd say he's three for three in the movies I've seen him in. Actually, I'll thrown in Kill Bill Vol. 2. He was Bud.

Matt Damon was great in the Bourne Supremecy and the Talented Mr. Ripley. I didn't see that horse movie, but I've been told he was the best thing about it.

As for Myers and Carrey, apparently you think comedies don't count as "great performances". I beg to differ and think they excel at pyhsical comedy. So I Married an Axe Murderer wouldn't be the cult classic it is today if not for Myers performance and Myers owns the first Austin Powers, which was a very clever and funny take on the whole Bond/Spy genre. Although I love all Carrey's movies and think he can do no wrong movies but I think Liar Liar was an especially good performance (it made my aunt who can't stand the man actually give him some credit) as is his performance in Eternal Sunshine.

Bullshit. She was great in "Beautiful Girls". I'd say better than Mathilda.

She was also (recently) far and away the best thing in "Cold Mountain". Small role, but very powerful.

And this could be the year of her comeback ("Garden State" and "Closer" are getting fantastic notices, specifically regarding her performance. And that's from more than one source)

You're right. I was thinking of Tom Sizemore.
For a second there, I thought I was going crazy thinking that he was in Heat after all. No biggie.

For the record, Madsen is awesome and certainly not a fluke. I hope he gets some good work after the success of the Kill Bill films.

Michael Madsden almost made "Die Anothger Day" cool, and his performance in "Donnie Brasco" is a great one too.

And Matt Damon is a very good actor, one who I have trouble finding a bad performance for. "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and "Good Will Hunting" are the big ones, but he made one of the most real and compelling action heroes in a looong time in "The Bourne Identity" too. He lost all that weight and gave a crushing performance in "Courage Under Fire" and was good again in "Saving Private Ryan". Then we have the oh so cool "Rounders", "Dogma", and some more I'll just leave out and you have quite the actor. He may not be your favorite type of actor, but he does everything he's done well.

Some of you people are insane. Michael Madsen? Helena BC? Dennis Franz?

Completely disagree with Brandon Lee as well. He elevated all the B-crap in he starred in, and THE CROW proved that when he got some good material, he really could play it well. All the more a shame that he died.

Busta Rhymes actually knocked me for a loop in Narc. And speaking of rappers acting, say what you will about Crash, but Ludacris was damn decent in it (considering how utterly awful he was in 2 Fast 2 Furious).

I dunno what the hell makes me think anybody in here has seen 2 Fast 2 Furious, but there ya go.

Paul Walker in Running Scared

There are some fucked-up choices in this thread.
Yeah there is. Why would someone resurrect a 3 years old thread that should have been titled "Actors I Don't Like". Short of Marlon Wayans, Stephen Baldwin and one or two others, there are almost no correct choices here.
I wish Diva would enlighten us on the exact definition of "pyhsical comedy".

I ran across it while looking for a different thread, remembered it from months ago when I only lurked here, decided to add my 0.02 cents. *shrugs*

My bad?
Jesus, I was that retarded just 3 years ago? No wonder I've only got one green box.

I've also murdered a lot of threads. That might have something to do with it.

I suppose James "Buster" Douglas against Mr Tyson would belong in another thread, huh?

I mean...we're talking world class flukes here, right?

Although I can easily believe him giving The Macho Man a good pimp slap or two.

Oh...all right. Fine. To the Sports threads, Robin!
