Movie Rentals

I don't usually get the chance to go to the video store anymore, but when I do go, I always find myself renting a mixture of films I haven't seen and films that I just love to watch but never bought. The films I always seem to go back to are God Told Me To, The Fearless Vampire Killers, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, various 80's slasher films like April Fool's Day, and Alice Sweet Alice. What films do you all always find yourselves going back to?

And am I the only one who still rents movies on VHS? Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge DVD supporter because I can actually watch most films in widescreen that way, but I find that it is almost impossible to rent DVD's without multiple scratches nowadays. I always make sure that I take the best care of the DVD's that I actually do rent, but it seems that anytime I rent one, there is a problem that is beyond repair. Does any one else have that problem?

Sometimes, renting VHS tapes works in my advantage anyway because I have a VCR in my old, dark basement that really helps with the atmosphere of any horror movie.

I dont have the dvd problem...thats because my video store has a member card..and if a dvd is scratched of broken, you pay for it..kida discrourges most parents form letting thier 4 year old from putting the movie in.

Anyway, i always find myself picking up "people getting eaten" movies..aliens,dinosaurs,...my only iffy is people eaten people..sure its kool...but not my favorite kind of film.as for titles, i have rented the first 3 alien films about 100 times in the past year, i'm going to get them soon, as part of my membership. so..thats fucking amazing. oh yea, and i am a big softie for ginger snaps.....although i havent got to see the sequal yet.

I usually go for the fucked-up movies -- and I don't mean the ones in bad condition. Anything that's out of the ordinary, or I've gotten good vibes about that sounds pretty way out, I'll rent. And if I like it, I'll go buy it.

Last week it was one of the Tomie movies, Tomie: Replay, and this week it's gonna be Rabid. I'm pretty sure the movie itself won't disappoint, but from what I've heard the extras aren't all that great outside of Cronenberg's commentary -- which you bet your ass I want to hear.

I still rent fairly often. I must admit, I don't have the money to buy much so it's often my best option... The video stores around here suck though. Well, that might be a bit harsh, they're not great, but at least one is starting to get better.

Example, this store now carries the unrated cuts of Audition and a couple of others I can't think of... Mind you, they started carrying Audition right after I'd gone out and bought the damned thing blind, but still.

I understand what you mean about the poor condition of the DVDs Iron Maiden, but I can never bring myself to get VHS unless it's something that is currently unavailable on DVD. My video store has membership cards as well, and theoretically punishes those who mistreat the rentals, but I don't think they ever enforce it.

There's a Canadian online rental service [Zap.ca I think] I've been meaning to try, but I just never seem to get to it. Besides, you have to become a member to browse their catalogue and I'm not sure they'll be worth $30 a month.

I no longer rent. I hate the late fees, having to take them back, and yes, scratches.

I haven't watched a VHS in years.

The only time I rent DVDs now is when they are fairly new, or sometimes I will have the cashier check the bottom of the disk; and then I'll decide whether to rent it or not.

Netflix has taken over my life.
I buy maybe one DVD a year. Maybe.

I rent a lot of stuff. Dvds mostly, sometimes VHS when the movie I'm looking for is not available on dvd.
I'm in a residence hall at the moment and you can pick up dvds at the reception, which is cool, even though they only have mainstream flicks. I also have a video store 2 blocks away. It's cool.

I rent movies that haven't got a DVD release. This weekend, for example, I rented Night of the Comet. Salem's Lot: THe Movie ( I felt robbed damnit) and Night of the Demons...goes to show I made the right choice to keep my VCR.

I can't find a good indie video store near me....Blockbuster carries edits mostly, not unrated or directors cuts, so I order from various websites.....it's sad, but the rental has gone away for me.

place that buys old DVDs?

I tend not to rent because I used to go broke paying late fees. Of late, I have taken to just buying up all my standard hollywood foddor from Blockbuster's previously viewed section. I can routinely get flicks for ~ $7 with the promotions offered. My problem is that now I have about 350 DVDs and some I would sooner get rid of to make space for something new or better. There used to be a place down on Peachtree that dealt in used media, but alas they have gone under. Anybody know of another place in town or on the web that might suffice?

Cheers,

JB

I usually rent about six movies a week from Rogers video. I occasionally get VHS but mostly DVD's because that way I can watch them snuggled up under my sheets, in my room, on my laptop.

I usually rent anything that looks disturbing or offbeat, or things that my friend who works there recommends. I'm only a poor highschool student, saving all my nickels, so I will only buy something if I really love it.

I only own about 50 movies, a mixture of DVD's and VHS, but every one was carefully selected so that makes it special. The idea of blind buying anything really irks me because I hate the idea of owning something that ends up being a piece of shit. The only time I end up blind buying is if a movie I've heard great things about is on sale for five dollars or less. Flea markets are my god.
