Whitley Strieber, Anal Probes and DAY AFTER TOMORROW

I was shocked when I found out that Roland Emmerich's THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW was "inspired by" a supposedly scientific book called "The Coming Global Superstorm" by Art Bell and Whitley Strieber. Yes, THAT Whitley Strieber. The same guy who wrote VISITORS, THE HUNGER, LAST VAMPIRE and many other genre novels. He also claims that he was (and still is IIRC) frequently abducted by Aliens who shove all kinds of metal probes up his ass to anal-yze him or whatever. They even made a film about that with our man Chris Walken but I cannot remember if Walken had anything shoved up his butt by E.T.s though that really ought to be a blast.

I'm more amazed that Art Bell was part of that, too. Put those two together, and the world might as well already be crawling with aliens who are slowly melting the polar ice caps with their army of mind controlled-buisness executives who make all the desicions to assure that the Earth will be sufficiently weak enough for a quick domination by the invading race.

The man's a bit of a paranoid weirdo. But damn is his radio show ever entertaining...

Art Bell's late night AM empire is the coolest thing on radio since the BBC World Service. It's weird, it's scary and it's absurd. But during the hay day of Coast to Coast in '98 and '99, it was awesome talk radio. Bell is a master at his craft, no question about it. Try interviewing a man who thinks the UFO's are in league with the Gnomes of Zurich for three fricking hours while keeping four million people tuned in! THAT is a challenge.

Also, Bell himself is most certainly not a paranoid weirdo. He's a pretty sensible libertarian. He certainly could bash the hell out of his guests, but that's not his job. That would be too easy.
We agree!

Sorry, I retract the paranoid weirdo comment, it's been a while since I've listened to him, but you're right, he is very sensible. He just knows all the right buttons to push, I guess.

I haven't had a drink since last November. I'm on some psych meds, though, anti-depressants, tranquilizers, that kind of stuff. But I don't see that influencing my posts. I've been messed up before I started taking them and I still am. I guess it just comes naturally.

Well, that's a relief...

Actually, even Art has been saying VERY frequently in discussions about this, this is a SCIENCE FICTION novel. His book 'The Quickening' discusses environmental problems and extreme weather, but even he doesn't suggest this would be a real possibility. He and Strieber are just friends, so when he wanted to write a science fiction novel, who better to collaborate with than a popular published author?

I'm kind of embarassed to know this, but Strieber has his own show too. He hosts "Dreamland", which used to be Art's show, only it's shortwave (LOL) and Internet only now.

www.unknowncountry.com

I just looked at the site, and now his wife has a show too, which I find hilarious.

At an old job I used to have to be on the road late nights on Sundays, and I'd always listen to Art. I was alone in a big van driving to remote cable TV head-end facilities to swap commercial tapes for the next week. Some of these rinky-dink facilities were literally nothing more than shacks in some rancher's field (The head-end for Shiner, TX Cablevision was a wooden shed with a tiny padlock on a plywood door).

Needless to say, pulling up to these fields on a dark winter night after listening to Art for hours, I would often get pretty freaked out.

He's married?!? So what does his wife think about his adventures with intergalactic butt-plugs and him dancing around naked with aliens?

His main replacement during the week is pretty good too.
George Noorey. He seems a bit more open to wierdness than Art, but in a "well, its possible so let's keep an open mind" sort of way.

A few weeks back he threw one of his guests off the air because the guy was claiming something, wouldn't give the proof to it, but claimed much of the proof was in some video he was selling. George gave him a chance to not be a shill and give the listeners proof, and he wouldn't do it. The interview ended and after the break George told it like it was. I respect that.

Its great that Art is well enough to do weekends now though. He ended up quitting the show (outside of the odd pickup day) for a while due to health problems.

Dag -- you guys forgetting about the film version of Streiber's novel Communion -- with WALKEN playing Streiber, no less:

"You. There, with the. PROBE. You are, not. Gonna..."

Hehe, but seriously, I'll check into Streiber's radio show this weekend, and mebbe see if Art Bell has a webcast anywheres -- the only thing I've heard from his show is that hidden track on Tool's Aenima which is pretty damned creepy.

Yeah, driving home late from college many a night, I listened to Art. It was fun let your imagination go and creep yourself out.

Art is definitely weird though. What I would always like was his odd logic and out of left field rationals, like when some guest or caller would say something like, "...and that is why Art, that aliens have taken over General Mills and are implanting alien zygotes in our stomachs through breakfast cereal." Art's reply, "I can see that. Makes sense to me." Then, another caller or guest would say, "...and that is the proof Art that aliens have taken over coca cola and are controlling our minds through telepathy through their tv commercials." Art's reply,"I dunno caller, that seems pretty far fetched." I always liked when Mars-man Richard Hogland was on, spinning all sorts of wild and crazy conspiracy theories over the slightest event or news item, usually from NASA, that PROVES! that live is/was Mars, and "they" know it.

My favorite: When John Glenn guest starred on Frasier, that was proof of the government alien conspiracy!

Favorite Coast to Coast moment ever- they had some substitute host on, this was like 3 years ago.

Host: "West of the rockies, you're on the air!"

Caller: "Hey, how are you doing, I wanted to talk about the lake next to Area 51."

Host: "Yeah, sure, what about it?"

Caller: "It's... not a lake."

Host: "What do you mean, could you elaborate?"

Caller: "It's not a lake."

Host: "Come on, what are you talking about?"

Caller: *Loud noise in background* "I have to go."

Host: "..."

Caller: "No, I have to go!"

Caller hangs up

Host: "CALL BACK... when it is safe!"
